This is about as rare and classic Cash as you can get. It was on an obscure US double-LP called "The Heart of Johnny Cash," in 1969-70, and no place else that I know of (Except maybe the Bear Family CD boxes that cost more than a flight to Europe.) Glad we have youtube to keep this song alive. same album had "Locomotive Man," which I'm about to search for on youtube.
My dad just told me yesterday how he first heard this song. He was in the army in the 60s and was in British Guiana and he went for a drink with his friend. They were in a bar and saw this johnny cash song (that they'd never heard before) and they played it about ten times and got drunk! Then when he came back to england he searched for the album then he found it. And he showd it me today. Wow!
this song has been in my head all day.love those mexican sounding trumpets. tonight i will get bombed out of my mind and play this song on the jukebox and dance around like a maniac. right after vitor belfort puts it to anderson silva. i hate that cock knocker.

Johnny Cash never spent time in a prison. The mug shot was one of the many pictures that showed him in poses that reflected His music. It was not about low points in His life.

this remidns me of the fast and darious bull fighter i married. oh he is such a studd muffin! how i love his crying! i sing this song to my dog too! long LIVE JOHNNY CASH AND THE WAILERS!!!
I mean no offense to anyone, I didn't really care for ring of fire, as I have heard it countless times. I like some of his older stuff like this. Rock Island Line, Ballad of a Teenage Queen, songs that weren't huge.
Very good song with John at his finest. You seem to be a big fan to go to the trouble of uploading this. It makes me wonder why you had to include the mugshot. With all that John has accomplished in his life and the way he touched so many other lives why do you feel the need to highlight any low points? John was human just as the rest of us. He had his good times and less than good times. People that like to focus on the bad are not really true fans. Realize that he does have family.
Well, i felt it had to be in there, because to me, the low points of Johnny Cash just make the high points look even better. It is part of the legend that is, was, and ever will be Cash, he could sing about the prisoner, and know what he felt, because he had been there himself, it's his connection to the common man. I don't know about you, but, as i said, the man has become a legend now, and this reminds me that Johnny Cash was a simple man who made mistakes and got over them.
Thank you for posting this terrific song. It's the songs like this one - great tunes which are never heard on the oldies shows - which really bring back the memories. This 45 - I can still see the orange label in my mind's eye - was included in my older brother's record collection, and I'll bet I played it more than him (not that he knew anything about it).
Johnny had so much success with "Ring Of Fire" (#17 on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1963 - his first Top 20 hit since 1958) that he hauled out the Spanish horns for this song - his followup single. This one only got to #44 in 1963.
This song is just as good as "Ring of Fire", but like so many other cash songs, they get put on the shelf and are unfairly forgotten. Thank you Johnny for being a real artist and a REAL MAN!

There is a spanish version of Ring Of Fire also!
