In short, the museum’s intent was not to honor her in an unqualified way, but rather to stimulate our audiences to reflect on the experience of Americans in the twentieth century through the lives of well-known women.
@theinsectmanofwv Thank you for your response to this video and I respectfully than you for clarifying the Smithsonian's position on the life of Margaret Sanger.
I share in the belief that birth control pills, condoms, IUD's and other methods which PREVENTS pregnancy is a need, that Margaret Sanger promoted, while STRONGLY disagreeing with MOST of her viewpoints.
@theinsectmanofwv Yes, I fully understand you nor the Smithsonian support the evil ambitions of Margaret Sanger as far as her expressed desire for eugenics and stepped up abortions with in communities she considered "undesirable."
Thank you for your communication of your position and the Smithsonian's position of human decency and respect for life, while supporting REASONABLE birth control such as the pill and condoms!
Margaret Sanger is included in the museum’s collection, not in tribute to all her beliefs, many of which are certainly repugnant, but because of her leading role in earlier efforts to distribute information about birth control to poor women – despite arrests under the then-prevailing Comstock laws and the fierce opposition of many clergymen – and her association with Planned Parenthood of America.
Thus the collection includes all the Presidents – even the morally deficient ones like Warren Harding - drug abusers like Janis Joplin and Elvis Presley, segregationists and bigots like George Wallace and Lester Maddox, and even Lieutenant William Calley, who was court-martialed for his role in the My Lai massacre of civilians during the Vietnam War.
The National Portrait Gallery, as you know, is a Smithsonian museum that documents significant American biographies through portraiture. It was chartered not to be a hall of fame, but to collect and display portraits of individuals who represent the full spectrum of the American experience – both the admirable and inspiring personalities, as well as others whose lives made a mark despite less-than-admirable deeds or beliefs.
I went to the site shown at the end of the video and could not find contact information so I went to the edu extension and found contact (search "contact") near the bottom right. then some inof in the top right of that link.
I would like to know why the comment - Evil...Pure evil... was flagged as spam. These ideas are pure evil to me. Do we not have the right to speak up for the people in this world that are not considered good enough to be allowed to reproduce by the founder of Planned Parenthood. This was her main reason for bringing birth control to Harlem - to keep these unwanted people from reproducing. She did get Drs and prominent black people to back her, but they were not aware of her motivation.
It is amazing how Americans do not want to know the truth about the origins of planned parenthood. Charles Darwin was extremely racist also and that is never taught in our schools.
