...dude, this is not really a beta version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It's a modified mixed-up and messed up version of Sonic the Hedgehog with some levels from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that don't work since you fall through the ground. Face it. Sega wouldn't have distributed a beta in the first place. Let's just all be grateful for the complete games we all play now.

@DeweyMaplez probably because they changed the objects for the shield boxes and ring boxes (and other boxes, actually). in other words, those shield boxes should be ring boxes, and the speed boost boxes should be invincibility boxes, etc.
