I am assuming that Dante is in a rebellious phase because he is smoking and his hair is black. He had not yet embraced his demon heritage like his brother did, which is why Vergil could devil trigger before Dante. It also seems that Dante could devil trigger before it was fully awakened, but he had trouble controlling it.
