Do this: If you raise taxes on the richest 5%, you can afford more police in high-crime, urban areas, so children are not afraid to go to school. (Of course, you'd need new standards for these schools.) Increasing taxes on the rich can afford the gov't. to get them that college education or job-training that they wouldn't otherwise ever have been able to afford. Those living in urban areas live in such dangerous neighborhoods that they are fearful of even going to their sub-standard schools. They may get food stamps, but they are not safe from violence and gangs. Maybe, Obama will be more sympathetic to those people. He is someone that came from the ghetto and was raised on food stamps. He understands their plight. Bush could never relate to them.

Someone else- If there was a government contract, somebody would step up to the plate to take the money. In our case right now- Ford. They didn't take gov money and turned a profit. What would have actually happened is the big companies would have done what they had to to survive and ended up with a better company in the end.

I remember when this started happening. Pres Bush was talking about bailouts, and I started yelling at the radio. I asked at the time, what's worse, a strong, but short depression or a lighter one goes on and on?
Judging by history, I'll opt for number two. In the two depressions in the US in the 20th cent., one was left alone and it ended. One was left alone and righted itself. One had a lot of government programs thrown at it and lasted 7 years longer than in the rest of the world.

Do this: If you raise taxes on the richest 5%, you can afford more police in high-crime, urban areas, so children are not afraid to go to school. (Of course, you'd need new standards for these schools.) Increasing taxes on the rich can afford the gov't. to get them that college education or job-training that they wouldn't otherwise ever have been able to afford. You can't expect them to get off of welfare without a skill to survive!

If you want more money for police, how about we stop spending on stupid crap? As far as the schools, money won't change crap. I scrimp and save to send my kids to a private school. After the fundraisers, our kids get about $5000 per student. They DECIMATE the public school kids in tests, and they do it with less money. And according to Harvard, this is normal.
