This honestly sounds like it could had been a Beatles song. Harry was a fifth Beatle, I can listen to anyone of his songs and enjoy, just like the Beatles.
@fatszenji89 He copied no ones music. But lots are influenced by each other.I can see the influence. in both. He spent a lot of time with John Lennon and Ringo Starr
The prior poster is right. This version is from "Aeriel Pandemonium Ballet", a 1971 LP of remixes of selected songs from "Pandemonium Shadow Show" and "Aerial Ballet". Unfortunately, I like the original from "Aerial Ballet" better. This version is almost too busy.
This was recorded in the same studio and with some of the same equipment as Jefferson Airplane's "Surrealistic Pillow" That's why there's an airplane on the album cover. This is Nilsson's 2nd album.
His first album for RCA was Pandemonium Shadow Show, his second was Aerial Ballet. That is where this recording comes from. I believe the next album was (confusingly) Aerial Pandemonium Ballet - which featured the same recording, or many elements of it, along with a classical guitar, and new vocals. (someone should post that one - maybe I will.)
@RevSpike Right on man, I have that version on LP. Harry also significantly sped up the tape so the instruments played much faster. I prefer the remixed version over this one. It gives me shivers. The first time I heard this song was the remix, then years later I heard this version and wondered why I didn't like the song quite as much!
Y'see, I remember hearing Aerial Ballet and being mesmerised. No loud twanging guitars (coconut was later) just wonderful arrangements, similar to the beatles and beach boys. He had a retro voice nostalgia ran through his songs. He was always going to shine very brightly for a short time...
Definitely aerial Ballet. I've got it!

I'm just reiterating craigraven's comment really.
Sandie Shaw covered this in 1968 and it was a good version, well sung. It didn't chart in the UK though, I think.
....can I find it anywhere?.......no. Certainly not on YouTube.

Great song by Nilsson, and there's a good cover of it by Sandie Shaw, who released it as a single in 1968.

Not enough people appreciate artists such as Harry Nilsson. Damn this is good stuff.

You know, I have a very different version of this song. It's a lot stranger. Is this how the song originally appeared on the album?
Shapelander 3 years ago
i believe this may have been re-recorded and put on "Aerial Pandemonium Ballet"-
if i recall, nilsson didn't like the sound of this album so it was re-done and combined with another re-recorded album and was re-released- help?
