I like both versions! Obviously, it's the Horton version that's the original (correct me if it was first recorded by someone else). It was through the Kitty, Daisy & Lewis version that I was first introduced to Horton. The slower pace of the Horton version makes it easier to hear the lyrics.
Ouch! It is possible to like both Elvis and Johnny Horton as well. Perhaps you haven't heard the right stuff? I like music to have some grit. For Elvis, try the Sun sessions. On the other hand, perhaps you've heard them already and still dont like his work? You're entitled to your opinion!
@kitsjuke and @guitarlad89 I like elvis, I like johnny Horton, but I think that Carl Perkins should have been King...Elvis is great though, and the Sun Records are his best work.
I looked it up, it is Bob Stegall. The guy has to be the most unique steel guitar player I've heard. I know I really like his work on all the early, early Johnny Horton music.
