Update from the Stonewall Library and Archives. Since the Anita Bryant exhibit first appeared in 2003 it has travelled to 10 cities and has been seen by close to half a million people. The Stonewall has moved into new space, inside a public library building making it the only Gay and Lesbian Library in the US supported by a city and county government. Our acceptance into the mainstream community is a testament to all those who stood up to bigots like Anita and made our faces, and voices heard...

She was demonized (as in the movie, 'MILK'), called names and had pies thrown against her. All of this, of course, was done by people who are always talking about 'tolerance.'

Homosexuals have done such a terrific job at demonizing anybody who doesn't accept their practices that nobody - especially a complicit media - is going to even want to appear at such an event. The gay rights campaign in 1977 was 34 years ago and nowadays very very few people know who Anita Bryant is or what the controversy was about . It is important to note the Anita's campaign ultimately failed. Miami-Dade County ultimately overturned the repeal of the gay rights county ordinance and it is law to this day. In fact neighboring counties such as Broward and Palm Beach have adopted pro-gay rights laws as well. Nowadays most big cities and many states have pro-gay laws in place.

It's kind of a back-handed thanks. Historians, Gay and Straight sometimes 'thank' people who tipped the scales in the direction of a civil rights righting a wrong. The Dred Scott case, the Pencil Factory Trial and Lynching in Atlanta ignited African Americans to 'come out' politically and economically put their money where their hearts were. Anita did just that. Before 1977 the Stonewall Movement we were out sexually, Anita put us out there politically. HRC was founded directly from her actions.
