This is great!! Finally found what I`ve been looking for. This is a real wolf-dog, you can see it - unlike all the other videos showing Malamutes and Huskies claiming they are wolf-hybrids.
Wolfdogs make great pets but they must be kept by people that are eductated about wolves and dogs. You have to learn to predict the possible behavior patterns that could happen such as when the dog challenge you for dominace they will. It is in their nature to take control if they feel their owner is lacking in control. You must always show them you have control of the situation you don't have to use violence toward them just act like you know what you are doing and never back down from them.
do you have any experience with a very shy wolfdog? Ours is SUPPOSED to be high percentage. Not sure if that is true because got him at a flea market. But we have had him 2 months and he still is so shy that he will not come to us. I don't think he was socialized as a puppy until we got him.
Theres a vid on here with Cesar Millan on wolf-dog hybrids. look it up people. just a bit of an education on the subject plus how we humans always mess with animals getting it wrong
i used to be a more violent person but i learned i couldnt get one if i was so it took 3 years and now when a dog is "bad" i dont yell at them i say bad dog or no and a stern look and then turn away and if they bite i say Ouch!! and then stop play. and she learns fastly
hi there, me and my partner are think about getting a wolfdog. my question is are they better in a group of dogs or on there own. and are they safe tohave around kids thanx
@OurTVproductions You said that you're not sure what Gambit is mixed with.He looks much like a German Shepperd/Timber mix.My wife and I have one close to that age,and she looks very alike. Also don't feed them a lot of potatoes,We lost a Hybrid, from eating to many potatoes, which causes kidney problems, causing death.
@wtfdik so do you just wake up to see if this guys uploaded a video. All you have done is leave some negative comment on all of his vids. Upload some yourself if you have so much to say. But im sure your just another memeber of the large group of canine snobs searching youtube to shine you wisdom
are czechoslovakian wolfdogs more manageable than other wolf/dog hybrids? i don't plan on raising wolf/dog hybrids anytime in the foreseeable future, i'm just curious
Do you know if anyone has successfully trained a wolf hybrid to stalk and hunt pigs and dear? I am very interested in a wolf hybrid for my next animal, but I like work my dogs. I take them hiking and camping often and want to start hunting with dogs as well and wonder if a wolf dog would make an adequate hunting companion. please let me know your thoughts you can PM me if that is easier too
I have a beautiful hybrid named Mac. I bred him with a chow, got first pick.so now I have Tosh a gorgeous X, has the black tongue and awesome colors, so i have Mac and Tosh now, My last name Macintosh cool eh
Just my 2 cents, but training a Wolf Dog is a wide open answer. Every content level is different and every animal is different. Disposition and personality has much to do with genetics. No 2 animals will be alike, and training them will vary.
ALPHA ROLL??? this is 2010, not 1960. Nobody does alpha rolls anymore.
You should look into joining the Florida Lupine Association. Florida has a very active group of Wolf Dog folks.
@bintheredidthat 'ALPHA ROLL??? this is 2010, not 1960. Nobody does alpha rolls anymore.' show that you dont a damn thing the alpha role is the most important part noob
@bintheredidthat -- Interesting. That's not been my experience, that training a wolfdog is a wide open answer - one too open for any sensible advice on expected temperament, behavior, and cognition.
The Alpha Roll, for anyone who doesn't know, is a term used to describe a training method which involves rolling your dog on his back and asserting dominance... and NO I do not support this conduct and yes, people do still do it.
hey, nice video. I was just wondering what your wolf dog is a mix of. You said it was 75% wolf, what kind of wolf and what other dog breed? the greyer dog please. thank you!
Oh and I just read the description of the video and to learn how to raise mine, I also bought the book "Wolfdogs A-Z" Its very informative, and helpful. :) I also found that if you continue to establish that you are the alpha through their life, starting at a young age that they will always respect you...with the occasional correction of course.. just like raising any child or animal. Raising one of these animals is like raising a young child though haha It takes that much work.
I just want to say thank you for taking the time to post these videos. I own a high content wolf hybrid that is the love of my life. Everything you have said is 100% correct. It is difficult raising a wolf-hybrid, but if you put a lot of effort into them they are better than a regular dog. Neutering and Spaiding helps alot though. Mine is a male, and I have heard females r harder to raise. They are so smart. Keep up the good work :)
As a guy who worked in a kennel for 5 years and ran sled dogs for 10 the average guy has no business with a wolf cross. If you think your a hot trainer go to the animal shelter and find the shy dog crouching in the back of the kennel, the one no one wants. take him home and attempt to train and socialize with him. odds are you will have better luck than a wolf dog.
@wa2zvt -- I agree, the average guy has no business with a wolf. business shouldn't be in ones mind. but if the average person eductates themself properly and takes the right precautions, they can be successful in raising and living with a beautiful hybrid.
As for your last part, I don't quite agree with that. That's a bit of a rough generalization. Different hybrids have different temperaments.
@OurTVproductions chickens . My solution to hit the pound and work with a dog that's already here that has poor socialation skills really is more workable than creating a creature for the world that needs alot of work to fit in. Had a pure wolf that ran on my rececreational dog team, not well , but ran. See the wolf was two smart to work hard at it.
@KillerKyle99 -- Not too bad, about average - except for the de-wolfing of your property lol. A large kennel or properly fenced yard can be a pain but is a MUST unless you plan to keep your wolf as an inside pet.
Mind you, different animals have different temperaments! So you might get a wolf and it's a great inside pet - but your neighbor gets one and it's quite the opposite. It doesn't mean all animals are the same, just different temperaments.
or you can make him think you are the leader. i once have a pet wolf. but i was the leader in his eyes. he would fallow me every were and i use to throw dog food in the air and he would ketch it by jumping a foot up in the air. They are wonderfull anials but my wolf would run were ever he wanted. because were i live dogs run lose. && he was niice to every thing puppys other dogs straingers. but he would come home with dear horns. but i was young at the time. && he got stollen
@cft6y -- LOL, deer horns! The father of my two wolves got out of his kennel one night, with his special lady wolf, and together they took down a small cow! It blew my mind. I pictured that disney film "lady and the tramp" and though, wow, a weird movie their little adventure would make. After so, they came back home and just waited to be let back in.

@srmiii90 -- well, sadly, there are A LOT of breeders in country parts of central Florida. It actually angers me. Most of these people keep them, several in fact, in small 5x5ft cages. They just keep them because they are "exortic pets" and they breed them for big $. The breeder I knew sold hers for $700. I got my wolves from a close friend as gifts - I saw it as an opportunity to try and help.
A stable breed is found in South Africa. They were bred and reared by the police to control crowds and they have no fear of objects pointed at them. They are about 10% larger than German Shepards.
I didn't think it was legal to own one of these beautiful animals in any state in the US unless it's a zoo or the like. I thought I read that somewhere when I was researching wolf and hybrid breeders. So for now I have my two gorgous German Shepherds.
@FullTraction4 -- depends on the state you live in and also the content of wolf. Most states require a license if they are above 75%. Hence, mine are 'registered' at 75 :)
@OurTVproductions If you live in Florida, that law is no longer valid. FWC has new rules based on phenotype and behavior. You may want to check out those new rules. The 75% rule went away in 2010.
My dog is said to be part wolf..and he definetly acts(and looks) the part. He howls, digs, is VERY stubborn.which has been our biggest problem.hes very friendly and gentle towards everyone, even other animals.and he was not really socialized when he was younger.VERY loyal.actually has an aweful attatchment disorder...he CANNOT be alone.granted, I work, A LOT.so he has gotten used to the times I am gone and knows when I SHOULD be home...Lue is definetly something else.A HUGE PAIN.but I <3 him.
GREAT description. My brother and his husky/shepherd lived with us and my wolf/shepherd were so different but some things worked with both. A lot of times one of them would help the other learn what we were trying to teach. So many of your points were very important for anyone planning to get a hybrid to know. Thanks for making these.
hi was really wondering, is a wolf dog a mix kind of dog? if yes what kind of breeds are the parents to be mixed, if no could you pls tell me more about its history ar background of some kind.. thanks a lot ^_^, i have a pure husky and was wondering to get one of the "wolf dog"
Probably not for now. It's a large commitment. Of course, wolves AND dogs are very individualistic. Some can very well say that x breed is more aggressive than y breed. It's not as simple as that. It matters in how you train them and the individual animal them self. I had a wolf dog for 11 years and never knew it. He's the most tame dog I've ever seen. He's even easy to take care of. It just really depends. Start out with a husky or malamute first.
I'm 18, and looking at getting a wolf dog in the next few years. I'm also from Canada, I've been told it's not illegal, but I don't know where you can get a high content wolf dog from. I've never heard of breeders here. Do you know anywhere you can get a healthy pup from?
the wolfdogs that look exactly like wolves are 85 to 95 percent wolf which you can get i believe these are 75 percent it depends on the parents were the parents grey wolf or artic wolf and did you see the parents that sired your wolfdogs
my hybrid is a germand sheperd mix and she white and she very shy and sometimes when i lay one the floor to watch TV she lays under my legs or on my feeet and falls asleep =P
I was under the impression that a wolf hybrid would run and hide if someone comes into your house. I have a doberman already so it won't bother me if the wolf doesn't help fight off an intruder. I think it would be cool if the wolf would protect it's owner though. Oh one question, Do most wolf hybrids get as big as large german shepherd? I've seen some that look like their no bigger than an average alaskan malamute
why hybrids? My uncle kept one when the mom died years ago. He got when it was like a week old and raised it. Now it's like a dog but its always running around in the backyard and it's house trained and everything.
@jc3000 -- no, it's so that I can keep em still! otherwise they would run like crazy and play. I filmed them both playing just the other day so I will be sharing that soon. It's nice footage and really shows how atheltic and beautiful they are in motion!
Recently posted an updated 3 part question and answer video mini-series. Check it out, give me a thumbs up if you like and let me know if you have any specific questions!
): my gma use to have a alaskan wolf hybird. she was the BEST dog ever. she never bit us once and was like our babysitter. she was so sweet and gentle but knew when to be protective.
You should specify that, if you take a pup out to socialize him, if something freaks him out, he can be ruined for life. It seems you have low-content wolfdogs; the higher-content ones are more difficult to socialize without making them worse.
@HoS777 my wolves are actually high content and I've never heard nor experienced what you've mentioned. Can you elaborate on 'ruin them for life'? Are you speaking of something like PTSD for wolves?
@OurTVproductions High content wolfdogs normally look like wolves. You dont find it odd that yours dont? The animals you are showing in the video looks like dogs
@cindy23323 -- I guess that's a matter of opinion. My wolves are registered at 73 and 74%/content. You should familiar yourself with genotype and phenotype.
@OurTVproductions I'm fully aware of how to phenotype, did you not see my hc animals that actually look it. you just proved that you arent though by saying that. And registered? lol Registered with who something like ckc because everyones fully aware that registeries like that are trash.
@OurTVproductions Really, registered with who or where, there is no registry for wolfdogs, in fact the last time pure wolves were available to mix with dogs was in the 50s, since then you need a federal permit to have them. I certainly dont see any wolf in any of those dogs.
@SHvar -- You HAVE to have them registered with the state you live in. IF not, then guess what happens when the puppy pound picks up your animal? Or ask a Vet why he'll ask you if your wolf is a wolf. Do you own wolves? Do you have videos you can show to prove this? Suddenly everyone on youtube is zoologist.
@cindy23323 Guy has low content at the most .. sorry bud. my wolfdog is 75 % and he has a lot of wolf charachteristics . And you can not tell how much percent wolf you have . Some genes are more dominant than others so the 75% 74% is bs. Its better to use high content mid and low. You have a german shepherd and a low content bud sorry to break it too you. But misinterpretation of content is bad for the breed.
@davacoopa -- My wolves are registered by a licensed breeder. Google search phenotype vs genotype before you ASSume to be able to tell content from a youtube video. But assuming that my wolves are 1% content, does it change my words all the same? Does it make my advice any more wrong? No, it doesn't. Come back when you have the winning lotto ticket numbers.

@OurTVproductions High content wolfdogs normally look like wolves. You dont find it odd that yours dont? The animals you are showing in the video looks like dogs
@TheXmutt -- yes... the house is their home and you all will be thought of as the pack. But this doesn't mean they will simply attack any new comer - they are very intelligent animals. If they sense you don't like this strange new person then YOU better watch out. But if you introduce them SLOWLY and over a period of time, they will be fine. OR should be fine. Mind you, different animals have different temperaments!
@MeowingWolf25 thanks a lot - I keep getting requests to post more so I do and I try to share a little bit of new info each time while always encouraging people to check out a book called 'Wolfdogs A -Z" which is a great wealth of information and resource than I could ever offer!
When it comes to potty training a wolf/hybrid, I think it's in the sense that they naturally try not to soil their 'den'. The house is the den, and by letting them realize that instead of putting them outside all of the time, they make that connection.
Ive been working with high prey drive dogs in protection for years now, but Im finnaly getting the opertunity to work with wolfs this summer in a scancuatary!
Kind of odd, that as a Biology student, and my love and passion for dogs, I just got the chance to interact with wolfs.
truth be told, In the near future, I was thinking of raising a 20-30% content. I dont think I would go higher, first run. and this is coming from a man who has been around large attack dogs
@1983paradox: That sounds excellent, congrats! That's definitely a career that you will wake up looking forward to each day and of course at that point it's hardly work. So kudos to your efforts and more. As for beginning with low content wolves, 20-30%, that's an intelligent move but I'd also like to add that a higher content would still be workable. Just nothing in the 80 - 90 percentile!
i used to take my wolf dog to the dog park he is a high content and is raised with dogs but any other dog he doesnt like. he is people friendly he doesnt like other dogs he always try to dominate them.
@1983paradox: He's registered at 74% - trust me when I say that you cannot tell a content of wolf by simply looking at one. It's genetics. But I will say this, again, that most of us 'do not want' a very high content wolfdog as the more wolf they are the more difficult it will be to train and predict their behavior.
@jcinger04 I feed my wolves dogfood, carrots, etc. A regular diet, much like any large dog. They usually leave their mothers around 4-6 weeks old and should be treated for Parvo ASAP! Also remember to keep them on their heart work medicine each month, especially when living in the southern US. And if raised as a pup, they should be fine with your 9 year old :)
To the commenters: It's very naive to say they are the same as dogs, maybe you think yours is but, they are part wild which makes them more instinct driven. Don't be naive and tell everyone they are all just like dogs, they most certanly are not! Educate yourself about them if you are looking into getting a wolf hybrid, the animals suffer when people aren't aware!
@princessgka - I agree, they are not the same as dogs. This must be understood. In fact the entire training process and interaction with the animals must be altered with a certain degree of respect! A lot of people get bit by these animals while treating them like a dog they once owned. We must remember that they are indeed partially wild creatures! they are not for everyone!
i had a wolf dog and he was a really nice animal. very good tempered. but he had a big problem with eating everything smaller than him and he kept getting loose. he ate 3 cats 2 birds and 2 verry small dogs and we had to get rid of him :(
@xxwes997xx What happened was pretty typical in a wolf dog hybrid. They grow up and their natural instinct would be to learn how to hunt. It's very hard to contain such an instinct, hence why they don't make great "pets" if you're not informed. Zoo grade fencing would have been the only way forward - you need a pen more than 50x50 metres filled with stuff for them to do or they'll get bored. (Some people even build them swimming pools).
Oh no, he's about 9months and just got out of another growth-spurt! They generally keep growing or at least 'filling out' or 'putting on weight' for the next year. So about 2 years for maximum size has been my experience.
how much energy do they have? are they like huskies and just never stop? and what kind of work ethic do they have? do you think they need a job? and lastly you obviously have a large back yard, how do you think they would do in a small yard? or no yard at all? sry for all the rapid fire Q's any insight would be great thx :)
They've got a lot of energy but they do wind down - they're not super wound up animals. It's important to take at least several minutes a day to let them run outside and just cut loose - and they WILL cut loose! After that, they'll tired themselves out and want some water and a knap :)
It would BEST for them to have more space to run. However, Gambit, one of my hybrids is a strictly inside dog and he's fine like that. Even when I let him out back he'll usually lay in the sun and just hand out in a particular section. But they do love to run... so reeeeally consider this!
He did in a recent episode, dealt with a pair of huge hybrids. The techniques were the same because basic dog psychology is based on understanding the pack mentality, dog or wolf.
@superjam18 he already has. Two in fact. A tundra hybrid and a timber hybrid. Both from the same owner living in the same home. Im sure if you look it up you'll find it.
@superjam18 he has. Hes done 2 episodes on wolfdogs. He treats them the same as he does other dogs... difference is, the wolfdogs are even more sensitive to his energy than the average dog.
And you can register your permit either online or through your county - just call up your local kennel and ask them to point you in the right direction. They should be able to give you a number.
p.s. im looking for a wolf dog that resembles a wolfs long thin snout and yellow to brown eyes .....so far the closest ive found is the dutch saarloos wolfhound wich is a mix of a german sheperd and a wolf....do you know any specific ones?
I'd suggest looking into a GSP/Timber Wolf hybrid, if you can find one? Best advice I can say is GO SEE THEM FOR YOURSELF! Go to different peoples houses and see different packs. Ask questions and take note on the animal's temperament.
It's almost like ordering a mail order bride... know what you're getting into lmao - I'm kidding ~
DO THEY HOWL? IF SO DO THEY HOWL ALOT, IS IT LOUD AND DO THEY DO IT ALOT ? CAN YOU TRAIN THEM TO STOP IT? anyway i think youre awesome dude dont stop them video faggots coming people need to know the truth!!!!
It's brilliant that you are having such a good time with your animals and even more so that you are willing to share the experiences you have had with others for their benefit. However, i find it troubling that for some of the more complex questions you are relying on merely your own experience with a small number of animals to make recommendations. It might behoove you to find people who have experience with a broader range of animals to refer people to for the more complicated issues.
Indeed, that is why I shared the book and suggest further reading. But I've also been around other packs of hybrids and have spoken quite a bit over the years with different breeders and owners. (large * small).
What sort of complicated issue might you be referring to?
For sure, and I don't mean to insinuate you don't have other experience. It's hard to develop an appropriate dialogue with limited character responses. Most specifically in this video, when discussing animals that have direct ancestry from wolves, which are heavily conditioned by nature to be good social predators, I get concerned when discussing the nature of the animals around kids and other animals. While your experience with YOUR animals may demonstrate that this kind of interaction is
I agree, thanks for the clarification. I agree, in fact, I believe it was you who brought this to my attention that I had indeed been over romanticizing how easy it was to own/raise hybrid wolves. So I thank you for that because I originally set out to let people know two things (a) wovles are not the "demons/monsters/lions" that a lot of us imagine them being... and (b) that they are NOT FOR EVERYONE! and that people should avoid getting one simply because they were taken by the exotic appeal!
possible, this is a pretty limited scope with a partial content animal. My take on it, which I humbly recognize is unsolicited, is that while you may have a modicum of success with your animal in this particular case, you are dealing with a dangerous outcome if an animal does NOT get along well with an infant or another hosusehold pet (more likely than not) and that not all of your viewers possess the same skills and experiences that you do, increasing their risk if training on their own.
Right, but I digress, these creatures are not more aggressive than say a pitbull or a poodle. I think people have over hyped the aggression part far too much. I've had pitbulls that were far more aggressive. Hell if I could put a poodle we once owned in a large dog's body.... we'd have hell!
Well, the problem is that canine genetics in *general* is very elastic. Qutie varied. You say that they are not more aggressive than, say, a pitbull. I have met many (probably hundreds) of animals labeled as wolf hybrids or wolf dogs that did indeed represent this group, and some may have even had some significant wolf content in them. However, aggressiveness isn't the issue. The most definitive characteristic that differentiates a wild wolf from a domestic dog is just that, the dog is
domesticated, meaning that, by its genes, it is tractable and an animal that is desirable to have in your home. A wolf is, by definition, an animal that has been conditioned by its environment to be a good social predator, ie an animal that you do NOT want to have in your home. Things like a drive for rank, a drive for reproductive rights, prey and food drives.. serve wolves well for survival in the wild and are reinforced, but are *highly* problematic in a household situation and are not all
I definitely agree with you, so it really does come down to the temperment would you say? Because that's more of what I was implying but you've seemed to have had far more experience than I have so you probably know better than I do if I just got luck with my wolf 'Gambit'... because if SO, then that does change the perspective of the hybrid as far as safety around kids, small animals, etc, goes because you're quite correct - we've got a natured/genetically engineered creature which is not a dog
desirable. When you are talking crosses between these animals, the genetics becomes quite muddled, and anyone who tells you that you can accurately predict behavior based on percent crosses is not someone you want advising you on what animals you place with inadequately prepared households or children. So I disagree, i think many of these animals (again, I'm speaking of a LARGE number of animals in many different situations, not just one or two) in fact have a great deal of potential to be
No, I've never been told that I could predict behavior based upon percent crosses, except that the higher the content then obviously the higher the potential of getting a more 'wolf' oriented specimen. And that's actually something that I've noticed myself. I've only only 3 hybrid wolves and have only been exposed and educated upon 4 liters from a pack of 7 - now 6.
It would seem to me that the females are the more aggressive ones, would you concur?
problematic in a household environment. Either way, my point was never to take over your reply thread or even to cast any negative light on your quite well done video. I merely enjoyed the dialogue, and would be happy to continue via e-mail, if you were interested in continuing this conversation. Either way, best of luck!
You are very polite in your response, that's a rare thing for me to experience here on youtube lol, it's probably the nature of a lot of my other videos - I know I bring it upon myself. lol. but I appreciate it and no your response was welcome and needed. In fact, I've already begun work on a new video addressing only the negative aspects of these creatures. I.e., the chewing, the biting, the temperment dangers (and this area is of the most importance to me), the escaping, alpha vs omega, etc.
Hey guys, if you've been following these videos documenting the growth of my latest cub, 'Gambit', then you might be interested to know that he's now 7 months old, big and beauitful! - and I've got some new videos of him posted and a few more to come.
I've also posted a video of my first hybrid wolf "Cratos". He's a husky/wolf mix with one bright pretty blue eye and one brown.
Thanks for all of your lovely comments, ratings, and support. I appreciate it :)
I dont know if you already answered this question (you answered a lot and I dont remember hearing this) but we like to go hiking in the woods and various mountainous locations a lot. We previously had a rough collie that would acompany us but sadly she has passed. I just recently stumbled on the idea of a hybrid wolf. Since they are pack oriented would they do good acompanying us on hiking trips (we dont usually use leashes out in the wild). We dont want the dog to run away though
It's been my experience that they bath well and ODDLY enough, they don't have a strong odor. I think our Shepard actually smells more and our bulldog definitely is a stinker lol.
And yes, I believe with the proper attention, training, and respect, that they most certainly can be - and without a leesh. My little two wolves stay close to me but of course they are more prone to chase something...
i just want to say thanks for taking time to educate the public. i have worked at animal shelters and have seen many hybrids put down because the owners didnt take time to learn about them. I have a few requests for another video if you dont mind. Can you please touch on the importance of researching state/county laws. wolf sanctuaries/rescues and the importance of finding a good breeder. thanks so much.
i have a GSD/wolf and she is very well trained. i take her to the park and all i have to do is snap to get her to come back to me. i would make sure that yours is fully trained before letting it off leash. alot of hybrids are shot by neighbors. best of luck. p.s. there are alot of wolf rescues that u might want to look into rather than spending 1500 or so on a breeder. alot of the animals in shelters have already been socialized and trained and its always a good feeling to save an animal
Indeed, thanks for the advice! Personally, I keep my wolves close to me and I generally avoid parks and such. I've gone through great lengths to 'wolf-proof' my yard for them so... lol - but yes, you are absolutely right that people will shoot them! I try to stress the importance of training your wolf and making sure you have a safe area for him. County officials don't take lightly to having to trap a damn near wild animal such a hybrid!
Peaceful is a great word for them. They really are quite unique creatures - real hybrid cat-dogs!
Personally, I had an easier time training my cubs than I had in the past with my other dogs. Then again, I really do give them the time and attention they require. which is why I'm so against people getting these animals to impress their friends or because "oh cool, a wolf, how exotic dude!" ---- not a reason to get a wolf, maybe a beer, but a not wolf!
a) I find them easier to train because I'm more of a visual trainer and that is great because these creatures will look you right in the eyes. If you look disappointed because they went (#2) on the floor they will eventually respond. It's strange but they can feel it.
Now mind you, A PUPPY IS A PUPPY... and my boy Gambit here is now 7 months old and I've gotta always remember that he's still in latter puppy stages! So I don't get SO upset with him over things that I should know better.
I want to do a couple more of these and would like to answer some more questions that I might have not answered already in my previous 3 or 4 videos on wolves.
But on a serious note, we are moving abroad (Turkey) and we bought a set of fields there and currently constructing a villa there. Personaly I would not know what to ask, my older brother wants these more then I do so I'll give him a ring to see what he may want to know.
Personally I would like to know how they will adopt to no other animal contact what so ever. It will be around 80km's away from the city.
I was browsing YouTube and thought of a few questions myself.
Do wolf dogs howl when the moon comes out like normal wolves do? I heard they howl when a full moon is out because they can see/communicate amongst one another or to other wolves because they can see each other better.
Do they own/make there own territories? If so, how well will they respond to other animals wondering in? We will be moving to a set of very large fields that we purchased, and they will mostly be isolated.
I have 2 wolves, a husky wolf, male, and his name is Lucian and a German shepherd wolf, female, Juno. But my question was, he should be about 2 weeks younger than Gambit and he's not close to as big, and my female isn't very big either. i wanted to know if maybe its normal for them to smaller sometimes, he eats regular dog food, and i had a couple other questions... if you could contact me, it would help, just hit me up on myspace look for Clarissa hites in oklahoma or Cassifer.. thanks
They're not as large as one would expect, they're about the size of an average German Shepard or Husky - maybe even a little smaller.
my wolf, Gambit, his papa was a freakishly large hybrid! I am actually surprised Gambit isn't larger. His dad just towered over the other wolves. One time he got out and killed, bringing down a small cow! He was almost put shot and put down but a friend was able to convince the owner not to kill the wolf. He probably paid him for his loss product, not pet.
This is great!! Finally found what I`ve been looking for. This is a real wolf-dog, you can see it - unlike all the other videos showing Malamutes and Huskies claiming they are wolf-hybrids.
kathykisslight1 3 months ago
Wolfdogs make great pets but they must be kept by people that are eductated about wolves and dogs. You have to learn to predict the possible behavior patterns that could happen such as when the dog challenge you for dominace they will. It is in their nature to take control if they feel their owner is lacking in control. You must always show them you have control of the situation you don't have to use violence toward them just act like you know what you are doing and never back down from them.
ArcticWhiteWolf333 3 months ago
do you have any experience with a very shy wolfdog? Ours is SUPPOSED to be high percentage. Not sure if that is true because got him at a flea market. But we have had him 2 months and he still is so shy that he will not come to us. I don't think he was socialized as a puppy until we got him.

How much do they roughly cost?
But I think my best bet is getting a malamute or husky because I have never owned a dominating dog like these.
Is it basically the same thing you have to do with huskies? Like dominate the dog so you are the "alpha" in the pack?

DarkKnuckles100 1 year ago
Just my 2 cents, but training a Wolf Dog is a wide open answer. Every content level is different and every animal is different. Disposition and personality has much to do with genetics. No 2 animals will be alike, and training them will vary.
ALPHA ROLL??? this is 2010, not 1960. Nobody does alpha rolls anymore.
You should look into joining the Florida Lupine Association. Florida has a very active group of Wolf Dog folks.

BrewP601 9 months ago
@bintheredidthat -- Interesting. That's not been my experience, that training a wolfdog is a wide open answer - one too open for any sensible advice on expected temperament, behavior, and cognition.
The Alpha Roll, for anyone who doesn't know, is a term used to describe a training method which involves rolling your dog on his back and asserting dominance... and NO I do not support this conduct and yes, people do still do it.
OurTVproductions 9 months ago
@bintheredidthat he actualy said 'alpha role', not 'roll'. like if the owner occupies the alpha spot in the pack.

Sakima636 1 year ago
I just want to say thank you for taking the time to post these videos. I own a high content wolf hybrid that is the love of my life. Everything you have said is 100% correct. It is difficult raising a wolf-hybrid, but if you put a lot of effort into them they are better than a regular dog. Neutering and Spaiding helps alot though. Mine is a male, and I have heard females r harder to raise. They are so smart. Keep up the good work :)
Sakima636 1 year ago
As a guy who worked in a kennel for 5 years and ran sled dogs for 10 the average guy has no business with a wolf cross. If you think your a hot trainer go to the animal shelter and find the shy dog crouching in the back of the kennel, the one no one wants. take him home and attempt to train and socialize with him. odds are you will have better luck than a wolf dog.
wa2zvt 1 year ago
@wa2zvt -- I agree, the average guy has no business with a wolf. business shouldn't be in ones mind. but if the average person eductates themself properly and takes the right precautions, they can be successful in raising and living with a beautiful hybrid.
As for your last part, I don't quite agree with that. That's a bit of a rough generalization. Different hybrids have different temperaments.
OurTVproductions 1 year ago 5
@OurTVproductions chickens . My solution to hit the pound and work with a dog that's already here that has poor socialation skills really is more workable than creating a creature for the world that needs alot of work to fit in. Had a pure wolf that ran on my rececreational dog team, not well , but ran. See the wolf was two smart to work hard at it.

KillerKyle99 1 year ago
@KillerKyle99 -- Not too bad, about average - except for the de-wolfing of your property lol. A large kennel or properly fenced yard can be a pain but is a MUST unless you plan to keep your wolf as an inside pet.
Mind you, different animals have different temperaments! So you might get a wolf and it's a great inside pet - but your neighbor gets one and it's quite the opposite. It doesn't mean all animals are the same, just different temperaments.

im not interesed in asking for a wolf hybrid, but how did you come across your hybrids?
srmiii90 1 year ago
@srmiii90 -- well, sadly, there are A LOT of breeders in country parts of central Florida. It actually angers me. Most of these people keep them, several in fact, in small 5x5ft cages. They just keep them because they are "exortic pets" and they breed them for big $. The breeder I knew sold hers for $700. I got my wolves from a close friend as gifts - I saw it as an opportunity to try and help.
OurTVproductions 1 year ago
A stable breed is found in South Africa. They were bred and reared by the police to control crowds and they have no fear of objects pointed at them. They are about 10% larger than German Shepards.
blackhand1818 1 year ago
I didn't think it was legal to own one of these beautiful animals in any state in the US unless it's a zoo or the like. I thought I read that somewhere when I was researching wolf and hybrid breeders. So for now I have my two gorgous German Shepherds.
FullTraction4 1 year ago
@FullTraction4 You need to do your research as every state has different laws and many states do allow them.
helix1776dragon 1 year ago
@FullTraction4 -- depends on the state you live in and also the content of wolf. Most states require a license if they are above 75%. Hence, mine are 'registered' at 75 :)

@OurTVproductions If you live in Florida, that law is no longer valid. FWC has new rules based on phenotype and behavior. You may want to check out those new rules. The 75% rule went away in 2010.

I understand what you mean with the cat thing.
Basically, like dogs, they are very loyal, and can be sweet.
...However, they also don't want to be cuddled constantly, like cats, cats like doing their own business...
Basically, wolves want their own personal freedom, but will not turn on you for it.
They will stay with you til the end if they have to. (also cus you have to be the alpha, do the job right and act like the alpha!)
Been gaining a lot of information.
How am I doing?

You should specify that, if you take a pup out to socialize him, if something freaks him out, he can be ruined for life. It seems you have low-content wolfdogs; the higher-content ones are more difficult to socialize without making them worse.
HoS777 1 year ago
@HoS777 my wolves are actually high content and I've never heard nor experienced what you've mentioned. Can you elaborate on 'ruin them for life'? Are you speaking of something like PTSD for wolves?

@OurTVproductions High content wolfdogs normally look like wolves. You dont find it odd that yours dont? The animals you are showing in the video looks like dogs
cindy23323 1 year ago
@cindy23323 -- I guess that's a matter of opinion. My wolves are registered at 73 and 74%/content. You should familiar yourself with genotype and phenotype.
OurTVproductions 1 year ago
@OurTVproductions I'm fully aware of how to phenotype, did you not see my hc animals that actually look it. you just proved that you arent though by saying that. And registered? lol Registered with who something like ckc because everyones fully aware that registeries like that are trash.
cindy23323 1 year ago
@OurTVproductions Really, registered with who or where, there is no registry for wolfdogs, in fact the last time pure wolves were available to mix with dogs was in the 50s, since then you need a federal permit to have them. I certainly dont see any wolf in any of those dogs.
SHvar 1 year ago
@SHvar -- You HAVE to have them registered with the state you live in. IF not, then guess what happens when the puppy pound picks up your animal? Or ask a Vet why he'll ask you if your wolf is a wolf. Do you own wolves? Do you have videos you can show to prove this? Suddenly everyone on youtube is zoologist.
OurTVproductions 1 year ago
@cindy23323 Guy has low content at the most .. sorry bud. my wolfdog is 75 % and he has a lot of wolf charachteristics . And you can not tell how much percent wolf you have . Some genes are more dominant than others so the 75% 74% is bs. Its better to use high content mid and low. You have a german shepherd and a low content bud sorry to break it too you. But misinterpretation of content is bad for the breed.
davacoopa 1 year ago
@davacoopa -- My wolves are registered by a licensed breeder. Google search phenotype vs genotype before you ASSume to be able to tell content from a youtube video. But assuming that my wolves are 1% content, does it change my words all the same? Does it make my advice any more wrong? No, it doesn't. Come back when you have the winning lotto ticket numbers.

will a wolf dog become aggressive if someone they dont know came into the house
TheXmutt 1 year ago
@TheXmutt -- yes... the house is their home and you all will be thought of as the pack. But this doesn't mean they will simply attack any new comer - they are very intelligent animals. If they sense you don't like this strange new person then YOU better watch out. But if you introduce them SLOWLY and over a period of time, they will be fine. OR should be fine. Mind you, different animals have different temperaments!

1983paradox 1 year ago
@1983paradox: That sounds excellent, congrats! That's definitely a career that you will wake up looking forward to each day and of course at that point it's hardly work. So kudos to your efforts and more. As for beginning with low content wolves, 20-30%, that's an intelligent move but I'd also like to add that a higher content would still be workable. Just nothing in the 80 - 90 percentile!
OurTVproductions 1 year ago
i used to take my wolf dog to the dog park he is a high content and is raised with dogs but any other dog he doesnt like. he is people friendly he doesnt like other dogs he always try to dominate them.

More like a 25 wolf, 75 German Shepard ( Black and silver)
1983paradox 1 year ago
@1983paradox: He's registered at 74% - trust me when I say that you cannot tell a content of wolf by simply looking at one. It's genetics. But I will say this, again, that most of us 'do not want' a very high content wolfdog as the more wolf they are the more difficult it will be to train and predict their behavior.

Where do you get wolf hybrids?
TheDoctorwhofan456 1 year ago
what do i have to feed them and are they ok with 9 year olds if raised by pup? and how old do they have to be to leave ther mother?
jcinger04 1 year ago
@jcinger04 I feed my wolves dogfood, carrots, etc. A regular diet, much like any large dog. They usually leave their mothers around 4-6 weeks old and should be treated for Parvo ASAP! Also remember to keep them on their heart work medicine each month, especially when living in the southern US. And if raised as a pup, they should be fine with your 9 year old :)
OurTVproductions 1 year ago
To the commenters: It's very naive to say they are the same as dogs, maybe you think yours is but, they are part wild which makes them more instinct driven. Don't be naive and tell everyone they are all just like dogs, they most certanly are not! Educate yourself about them if you are looking into getting a wolf hybrid, the animals suffer when people aren't aware!
princessgka 1 year ago
@princessgka - I agree, they are not the same as dogs. This must be understood. In fact the entire training process and interaction with the animals must be altered with a certain degree of respect! A lot of people get bit by these animals while treating them like a dog they once owned. We must remember that they are indeed partially wild creatures! they are not for everyone!

xxwes997xx 1 year ago
@xxwes997xx What happened was pretty typical in a wolf dog hybrid. They grow up and their natural instinct would be to learn how to hunt. It's very hard to contain such an instinct, hence why they don't make great "pets" if you're not informed. Zoo grade fencing would have been the only way forward - you need a pen more than 50x50 metres filled with stuff for them to do or they'll get bored. (Some people even build them swimming pools).
AvisCantrix 1 year ago
So gambit isn't fully grown yet?
shizzel122 1 year ago

Momenot137 1 year ago 2
They've got a lot of energy but they do wind down - they're not super wound up animals. It's important to take at least several minutes a day to let them run outside and just cut loose - and they WILL cut loose! After that, they'll tired themselves out and want some water and a knap :)
OurTVproductions 1 year ago
It would BEST for them to have more space to run. However, Gambit, one of my hybrids is a strictly inside dog and he's fine like that. Even when I let him out back he'll usually lay in the sun and just hand out in a particular section. But they do love to run... so reeeeally consider this!

Thanks alot dude and i dident call you a faggot i said them video faggots its like an adjective for me like "awesome videos"
ShitTheLegendary 2 years ago
p.s. im looking for a wolf dog that resembles a wolfs long thin snout and yellow to brown eyes .....so far the closest ive found is the dutch saarloos wolfhound wich is a mix of a german sheperd and a wolf....do you know any specific ones?
ShitTheLegendary 2 years ago
I'd suggest looking into a GSP/Timber Wolf hybrid, if you can find one? Best advice I can say is GO SEE THEM FOR YOURSELF! Go to different peoples houses and see different packs. Ask questions and take note on the animal's temperament.
It's almost like ordering a mail order bride... know what you're getting into lmao - I'm kidding ~
OurTVproductions 2 years ago
DO THEY HOWL? IF SO DO THEY HOWL ALOT, IS IT LOUD AND DO THEY DO IT ALOT ? CAN YOU TRAIN THEM TO STOP IT? anyway i think youre awesome dude dont stop them video faggots coming people need to know the truth!!!!
ShitTheLegendary 2 years ago
Yes they howl
Not so much - but all dogs are different
They howl for reasons, they don't just begin howling for no reason - especially in the house.
And thanks duder, but did you just call me a faggot?! lol

Ketashan 2 years ago
Indeed, that is why I shared the book and suggest further reading. But I've also been around other packs of hybrids and have spoken quite a bit over the years with different breeders and owners. (large * small).
What sort of complicated issue might you be referring to?
OurTVproductions 2 years ago
For sure, and I don't mean to insinuate you don't have other experience. It's hard to develop an appropriate dialogue with limited character responses. Most specifically in this video, when discussing animals that have direct ancestry from wolves, which are heavily conditioned by nature to be good social predators, I get concerned when discussing the nature of the animals around kids and other animals. While your experience with YOUR animals may demonstrate that this kind of interaction is
Ketashan 2 years ago
I agree, thanks for the clarification. I agree, in fact, I believe it was you who brought this to my attention that I had indeed been over romanticizing how easy it was to own/raise hybrid wolves. So I thank you for that because I originally set out to let people know two things (a) wovles are not the "demons/monsters/lions" that a lot of us imagine them being... and (b) that they are NOT FOR EVERYONE! and that people should avoid getting one simply because they were taken by the exotic appeal!
OurTVproductions 2 years ago
possible, this is a pretty limited scope with a partial content animal.
Ketashan 2 years ago
Right, but I digress, these creatures are not more aggressive than say a pitbull or a poodle. I think people have over hyped the aggression part far too much. I've had pitbulls that were far more aggressive. Hell if I could put a poodle we once owned in a large dog's body.... we'd have hell!
OurTVproductions 2 years ago
Well, the problem is that canine genetics in *general* is very elastic. Qutie varied. You say that they are not more aggressive than, say, a pitbull. I have met many (probably hundreds) of animals labeled as wolf hybrids or wolf dogs that did indeed represent this group, and some may have even had some significant wolf content in them. However, aggressiveness isn't the issue. The most definitive characteristic that differentiates a wild wolf from a domestic dog is just that, the dog is
Ketashan 2 years ago
domesticated, meaning that, by its genes, it is tractable and an animal that is desirable to have in your home. A wolf is, by definition, an animal that has been conditioned by its environment to be a good social predator, ie an animal that you do NOT want to have in your home. Things like a drive for rank, a drive for reproductive rights, prey and food drives.. serve wolves well for survival in the wild and are reinforced, but are *highly* problematic in a household situation and are not all
Ketashan 2 years ago
I definitely agree with you, so it really does come down to the temperment would you say? Because that's more of what I was implying but you've seemed to have had far more experience than I have so you probably know better than I do if I just got luck with my wolf 'Gambit'... because if SO, then that does change the perspective of the hybrid as far as safety around kids, small animals, etc, goes because you're quite correct - we've got a natured/genetically engineered creature which is not a dog
OurTVproductions 2 years ago
desirable. When you are talking crosses between these animals, the genetics becomes quite muddled, and anyone who tells you that you can accurately predict behavior based on percent crosses is not someone you want advising you on what animals you place with inadequately prepared households or children. So I disagree, i think many of these animals (again, I'm speaking of a LARGE number of animals in many different situations, not just one or two) in fact have a great deal of potential to be
Ketashan 2 years ago
No, I've never been told that I could predict behavior based upon percent crosses, except that the higher the content then obviously the higher the potential of getting a more 'wolf' oriented specimen. And that's actually something that I've noticed myself. I've only only 3 hybrid wolves and have only been exposed and educated upon 4 liters from a pack of 7 - now 6.
It would seem to me that the females are the more aggressive ones, would you concur?
OurTVproductions 2 years ago
problematic in a household environment. Either way, my point was never to take over your reply thread or even to cast any negative light on your quite well done video. I merely enjoyed the dialogue, and would be happy to continue via e-mail, if you were interested in continuing this conversation. Either way, best of luck!
Ketashan 2 years ago
Indeed, so have I enjoyed the dialogue. Feel free to send me an email :)

Apice 2 years ago
I've not answered that... but I will!
Firstly, sorry to hear about your loss collie :(
It's been my experience that they bath well and ODDLY enough, they don't have a strong odor.

Can you please touch on the importance of researching state/county laws. wolf sanctuaries/rescues and the importance of finding a good breeder. thanks so much.

i have a GSD/wolf and she is very well trained. i take her to the park and all i have to do is snap to get her to come back to me. i would make sure that yours is fully trained before letting it off leash. alot of hybrids are shot by neighbors. best of luck. p.s. there are alot of wolf rescues that u might want to look into rather than spending 1500 or so on a breeder. alot of the animals in shelters have already been socialized and trained and its always a good feeling to save an animal
elimay1334 1 year ago
Indeed, thanks for the advice! Personally, I keep my wolves close to me and I generally avoid parks and such. I've gone through great lengths to 'wolf-proof' my yard for them so... lol - but yes, you are absolutely right that people will shoot them! I try to stress the importance of training your wolf and making sure you have a safe area for him. County officials don't take lightly to having to trap a damn near wild animal such a hybrid!

i have a wild wolf and its peaceful its easy
to train
jkova6 2 years ago
Peaceful is a great word for them. They really are quite unique creatures - real hybrid cat-dogs!
Personally, I had an easier time training my cubs than I had in the past with my other dogs. Then again, I really do give them the time and attention they require. which is why I'm so against people getting these animals to impress their friends or because "oh cool, a wolf, how exotic dude!" ---- not a reason to get a wolf, maybe a beer, but a not wolf!
OurTVproductions 2 years ago
Are they harder to handle than a
" regular " pure breed dog? do u have to have a special liscense to own one of these dogs? Are they good with cats and other animals?
passion2heart 2 years ago
a) I find them easier to train because I'm more of a visual trainer and that is great because these creatures will look you right in the eyes.

Editing a new video, will post it soon!
Also - I NEED QUESTIONS!
I want to do a couple more of these and would like to answer some more questions that I might have not answered already in my previous 3 or 4 videos on wolves.
Thanks!

My question:
/watch?v=YUbmt-ze_os&fmt=18
:D
But on a serious note, we are moving abroad (Turkey) and we bought a set of fields there and currently constructing a villa there. Personaly I would not know what to ask, my older brother wants these more then I do so I'll give him a ring to see what he may want to know.
Personally I would like to know how they will adopt to no other animal contact what so ever. It will be around 80km's away from the city.
Any ideas what we can do when icolated?
CubeLuda 2 years ago
Excellent questions! Keep them coming and I will answer them in the next videos!
I'll be posting a new one either tonight or tomorrow answering some the latest questions. If I don't get to yours I will so just be patient!
Thanks for your support!

But my question was, he should be about 2 weeks younger than Gambit and he's not close to as big, and my female isn't very big either. i wanted to know if maybe its normal for them to smaller sometimes, he eats regular dog food, and i had a couple other questions... if you could contact me, it would help, just hit me up on myspace look for Clarissa hites in oklahoma or Cassifer.. thanks
cassa216 2 years ago 2
They're not as large as one would expect, they're about the size of an average German Shepard or Husky - maybe even a little smaller.
my wolf, Gambit, his papa was a freakishly large hybrid! I am actually surprised Gambit isn't larger. His dad just towered over the other wolves. One time he got out and killed, bringing down a small cow! He was almost put shot and put down but a friend was able to convince the owner not to kill the wolf. He probably paid him for his loss product, not pet.
