15 years ago I heard a different studio version with pedal steel guitar and 5-string banjo on it, does anybody know on which album I can find that version? Thanks
Listen carefully right after 1:40 when she says, "I wanna ride the waves down at Galveston when the hurricanes blow in." My channel contains a video (Hurricanes in TEXAS?!?) that repeats this clip of the song over and over again. Can you even believe someone would make a song about a hurricane hitting the Lone Star State?!? I didn't even know that Texas was a hurricane state until 2005 when Rita hit, and the devastation of Ike last season was something I never thought I'd see in this lifetime!!!
I don't object to it, but most people do have the tendency to believe that "never in the history of mankind has a hurricane passed west of the Sabine and/or north of the Rio Grande," thus making it an impossibility for them to "mess with Texas." The averaga Austinian (new word?) believes that it doesn't rain at all in Texas, let alone get to where a hurricane could make a direct hit. I'll bet the only people in Austin who know about Hurricane Ike last year are the ones who moved there from here.

I have been a Nanci Griffith fan for years, her voice can be so soft and tender then rough and gruff. Very talented!

Hurricanes happen in the Gulf Coast. Why do you take offense at someone singing about her experience?

@irisom
Interesting comments about rain in Texas. Griffith was referencing the Hurricane of 1900, which claimed more lives than Katrina and Ike combined.
I do love this song, especially the Live 1988 version that was taken down a few weeks ago...
