@scooterkidd3 what the fuck does george lopez have to do with "You're Still a Young Man"??? what, just because he said he liked it on TV? if he likes it so much, then he should have TOP on Lopez Tonight.
The best band ever! This stuff cvannot be replaced... the power and beauty of the noise created makes you 'feel' it all. Go see them in concert while you can.... we have seen them three times and cannot get enough.
Still on in the groove - I never - I mean never - get tired of this song - original studio version - live with alternate substitutes singing lead - as long as it's Tower of Power - it's my sho nuf jam.
@SimonHackett88 He's incredible! I played trumpet four years and I still remember how painful it can be to play. And youre right...him playing trombone right afterwards...man I admire him....
@SimonHackett88 his name is "Iron" Mike Bogart. he's a bad dude, great even, but he's no Mic Gillette. the original trumpet/trombone player for TOP. James Morrison doesnt even compare to Mic Gillette haha
@SimonHackett88 : Michael Bogart in Trumpet, him & his wife Jeannie, is a good friend of mine. We were in Japan together in the late 90's when he was in the US NAVY BAND, THEN HE GOT OUT, join the Lynard Skynnard band & eventually with the TOP. He left the group & went back to Naval Academy in Annapolis to join back the US naval band. Seen them here in Las Vegas w/ TOP during thier gigs here in Orleans Casino. Good horn player. Way to go Mike.
Nobody can touch TOWER OF POWER!!! KINGS OF SOUL AND FUNK!!! Best Ballads in all the history of time. I'm 20 years old and Tower of Power is my favorite band of all time.....
I just did a solo opener for them at Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom on 7-29-10. They were jaw dropping, one of the best live shows I've ever experienced, really on their game. Incredibly warm and supportive people, I need to catch them again soon! Thanks for posting this high quality clip.
Dayum I get the chills just listening this jam,me recuerda los tiempos viejos back in Sin City, saludos desde Durango,Mex..Thanx krzycho13 for making me smile!! :D
Thanks for this, bringin tears to my eyes and remembering singing this song with my best friends older bro's band, I was in high school and had my health, great times.
As Randy Jackson would say, "it was a bit pitchy". There seemed to be a little trouble hitting the notes just right on this particular performance but what notes may have been missed was more than made up for in the pure soul of the energies collectively. TOP is just plain BAD!
@chungiemunchin It looked like they were having trouble with their monitors. I don't think they could hear each other that well for whatever reason. Some in the band kept messing with their earpieces. Sound people are to blame for that crap... being in a band myself, I hate when a bad sound person/set-up makes the band sound worse than they normally would
I used to drive this black guy friend of mine home from work all the time in the 70's. The first thing I'd do is put on this song for him for the drive. I'll bet we played it over and over again until I pulled into his driveway! Even then, he didn't want to get out of the car...
@belmontmike : Michael Bogart in Trumpet, him & his wife Jeannie, is a good friend of mine. There was once a guy in my life that I accused of being too young and sent him on his way! Over time I discovered he should have never let him go. He was wonderful to me and really loved me...Time has given a chance to see that he turned out just fine!
I used to DJ at the "IMAGE OF ST. LOUIS" I was lean and had a fro. I prolly didnt get to move to the "better gigs" at the club cause I refused to stop playing Tower of Power and old Motown. but ....my friends and I had a great times. An the ladies liked me lol
I have witnessed several guys who sang for TOP. And I like em all. This guy is kinda off. Close your eyes and listen. he focused more on the vocal acrobatics than the feel of the song. Ang come one, It's out of tune. And another rule when covering a song is you should know the intention of the song writer. Ride along the groove of the arrangement. You don't have to sound like the original.
He can't even phrase his adlibs under the time signature. . Larry Braggs can sing maybe. But not with TOP. And I agree that this video doesn't justify his skills. But in this video... he is off.
The original singer was Rick Stevens. He left the band after recording virtually all of their third album, with "What is Hip", "So Very Hard To Go" and "Soul Vaccination". It was rerecorded with his replacement Lenny Williams. He was convicted of a double murder a couple of years later and has been incarcerated since 1974.
This band never, ever ceases to amaze me!!! 40 years and still makin' it happen. With a little more practice, these guys just might kick ass, someday (LOL!). Great post krzycho13...thanx for sharing!
Wrong! Rick Stevens was the original and HE is convicted for murder. Don't believe me? Google it. Lenny Williams is still alive and well and gives annual concerts at a high school.
@eaglesgeo1 Nothing like old school music, they used a real band the music was from the heart and the songs had meanings, some of this stuff today is hot garbage.
