Is this training similar to drug sniffing training used by K9 handlers to train their dogs?

Yes very similar. We use clickers, used by many professional animal trainers to mark behaviors. We also use a method we call opportunistic training, which is essentially shaping without luring. We use luring if necessary but like the results when behaviors can be observed and marked without too much handling or luring.
