Direct injection's major problem - sounding like a diesel, which is cool with a truck but awkward with a car like the RX. I thought the engine in the RX had the excellent multi-port injection design with the port injection designed mainly for low speeds - shouldn't that quiet down the RX at idle? (just an assumption)
What I have been telling people here on You Tube is that Lexus has improved on building their cars really well but people are coming in here bashing on them gets me mad.
@heartlessvietboy lol I'm not the basher. I'm the defender. I was simply giving a constructive argument. All cars with direct injection make that diesel noise - take the updated Porsche 911 lineup for example.
Constructive is not the right word. Constructive means moving forward. It does not mean help. Something constructive means something moving forward or advancing.
Example:
When a teacher tells her student, "Alexus, that is constructive work you are doing", it means moving forward. Unless you can give me another sentence, until then, everyone in America must use constructive as moving forward.
One was that direct gasoline injection was better than multi-point sequential gasoline injection in higher performance cars.
Two was that multi-point sequential gasoline injection was better than direct gasoline injection in the regular everyday car.
Three was that the word constructive doesn't mean help but means something positive. I do not know direct injection cars make that diesel noise. I didn't know a gasoline can make a noise.
@heartlessvietboy Multi-port fuel injection in some Lexus engines consist of both indirect [port] fuel injection system and direct [port] fuel injection system. If you want to argue that having only direct injection is better in performance vehicles, then I suppose I can agree in the sense that the engine is less complicated and therefore easier to maintain.
The Audi LeMans racing prototypes create little sound because (besides not revving very high) most of the energy is used to power to wheels instead, but still there is sound.
Lexus hybrids operating without the gasoline engines are like electric cars - the moving components and all the other stuff create a little whining noise, which blind people with enhanced hearing should be able to detect but don't and complain instead...
@heartlessvietboy I haven't really answered your point concerning the noise just yet. First of all, of course gas engines make noises. And my little complaint was that direct injection cars seem to sound like diesels, and I don't know why - maybe they benefit from engineering based on diesel engines' advantages.
I've listened to a lot of cars with direct injection, and there is still that diesel knocking sound even when the engine is warmed up. I like sound, but the moment just seemed unrefined.
Don't be surprise one day that Gas Engines don't make noise or becomes super quiet. Our conversation will continue for it is a pretty intellectual matter.
The future will be great. Automobile Manufacturers are working on pure electric cars. Lexus will launch their Hybrids come 2012. Eco-Friendly Luxury. =)
@WorldofLuxury It should but you gotta remember this is a show car and its engine probably hadn't been on for quite a few days so it's cold. When you cold start, the engine first idles at about 1500 rpm :)
@paullam007 lol The engine does that? I had both an IS and ES loaner that made that noise at a cold startup, below 1k rpm, and then the sound was still there after a drive. aha And I realize that the vehicle is in a room that tends to echo. Anyways, I want to point it out again that virtually all cars with direct-injection tend to sound like diesels. Even the LFA engineers joked about not having to deal with that sound at idle since the LFA engine doesn't have direct-injection.

I do not know much about the gasoline piston engine. What is direct fuel injection?

What is a constructive argument? I do not know.

@heartlessvietboy Something constructive is something helpful.

sigh I'm sorry, but exactly what are we debating about?

@heartlessvietboy Concerning the noise: Any movement creates noise.

@WorldofLuxury And Also they're in an enclosed space in the show room so the sound reverberates off the walls and glass as well.
