  • When I was a young man of 15. My first job was in a pool hall in Oshawa Ontario. I swept the tables of lint and dust and stood back as the real men took to those same tables. Later one of those evenings Cliff Thorburn came and demonstrated how one played snooker. Ohh the skills he had...

  • Every journey starts with one misstep ...

  • could someone send me a video in english of the first snooker 147?

  • Cliff THorburn is a great guy and a derserving champion, master at many things....He will always be the first 147 at the crucible, all you brits you only post videos on here with them losing...where are the videos when he beat Higgins in the 80 final or the 3 masters titles he won...HUH where are those vid;s......and what about the 80's semi's with Higgins and Kirk Stevens...White and Stevens always had great matchs...

  • thumbs up if ding jun hui ruins the commentary!

  • Supr duper lyk......

  • Lol nice break,be he has played soooo slow.

  • ahh it was back in the good old days where the players were aloud to smoke

  • @thepanterakitty ALLOWED.

  • second last red

  • Canada was showing up as the best at everything over there back then beating the whole UK at their own games. We had Cliff here kicking butt and the following year Kirk Stevens put on a display...even Bill Werbinuk was going around taking all the money. Then there was even darts we had Eric Briscoe over there and he was winning everything as well.Back thenm we sure showed them Limeys the what for owned the whole lot of them at their own games lol

  • @braindonater yes but where are your great players now..?

i admit thorburn, stevens and werbenik were great players in the golden age of snooker and this is when it was worth watching.

Not the po-faced wannabes we see nowadays.

And eric bristow was english you stupid bastard.

    take care.

  • @MrArnold1972 u r right man thorborn, steve davis griffiths were are and would be legends of this game, they played this royal game in royal stylde. ronnie or other players can never match them. u can also add spencer. robby fouldwari and many others of 80's in that class

  • @MrArnold1972 worth watching? this was as boring as anything! give mem O'Sullivan or Judd Trump anyday!

  • @braindonater Er, who actually won the world title in 83?

  • @FlaviusConstantius Steve Davis won in '83; he beat Thorburn 18-6 in the final.

  • nice 147 by cliff, thanks for uploading

  • Hey what....he got a 151 break i.e n)147

  • nah he gotta 147 break, n 151 top score...

  • OK break

  • سبحان اللي عطاه هالتركيز ..

    ^_^

  • what's with the chinese dude?

  • ye smoke and drink... i d love to see more nature behavior like that in ourdays... now its like u see robots

  • Cliff at his best!

  • there smoking? lmao

  • lol i love it when the guy misses he has a smoke lol

  • I wonder how many people actually remember the result of this match. (For the record, Thorburn won 13 - 12)

  • hIS OPPONENT LOOKS LIKE THE GOOFY ONE FORM "ON THE BUSES" LOL

  • @willmross You don't know how close to the truth you are - he used to be a bus conductor! lol

  • A previous commentator is right...there's a piece of this match missing. Working through the reds must have been slow; and some videotape editor decided to cut...

Cliff was always interested in HOW a match was edited for television: by "judicious" editing, it's possible to favor one player over another (common in U.K. editing of a match); or, in this case, remove a piece of the action in order - let's be kind - to create suspense.

One hopes the complete game has survived - somewhere...

  • @awarabichoo 15, mate

  • Fastest 147 in Crucible history

  • Thanks for putting up this video. I'm a big snooker fan and I really enjoyed it. I had no idea players were smoking and wore ties.

  • 3:10

  • funny to see how shaky it was for his first red... It was so close to the pocket and it took him years to pot and still missed...

  • no more boring, 147s when the new grey ball is introduced, the sooner the better, good luck with the new one cliff

  • Comment removed

  • ha ,i just saw cliff tonight ,he came to paly snooker.

  • I remember seeing this when it happened. Great tribute that the other table stopped playing to watch. Lovely to see Bill Werbeniuk come in at the end.

  • if you look closely when cliff is on his knees after potting the final black the man 3rd from wearing glasses the end in the front row with a blue shirt on was the man that got interviewed about 2 years ago because he has been to every quarter, semi and final since the championship started way back in the 1970s...a bit of useful information i thought you might like

  • @ruggerio do you know if this interview up on u-tube ?

  • This match was epic, im sure this 1 was the one that didn't finish until like 4am, if it's the 1 im thinking of it finished at exactly 3:51am

  • yeah I wish I could see this whole match.

  • is he really smoking? how great! xD

  • I love the nervous twitch that terry has when he first smokes the cigarrette

  • cook me an omelete terry:)

  • it would have been funny as hell if at the end when he shaked his hand - all the the cigs flew out of the packet lol

  • I like it at the end when Jack Karnehm said "Come on mate." A quote he was famously remembered for and probably the best piece of advice to a snooker player under those tense circumstances.

  • Wasnt it "good luck mate" ?

  • I have played Cliff, as a matter of fact i took some lessons from him too.

  • John Williams is the match referee.

  • All from a dodgy first shot. You have to take your luck where you find it.....

  • Cliff Thorburn is my cousin....his grandmother is my grandmother's sister.

  • Hes my Brother, no my Dad. He came round for dinner the other day. No... I am Cliff Thorburn, and so is my wife.

  • @mattcol99 shut the heck up

  • @mattcol99 i don't get it?

  • hang on the chinese want to clone thorburn ha ha

  • Whats it to you anyway deadlyb1 you racist scum, do you play?

  • die u ignorant cunt.. China is going to dominate snooker soon enough so get used to it.

  • Oh sorry for making you freak you fucking racist.

its fucking shyt to see you here in my posting.

by the way, dont cry if we beat you in snooker and hopefully you wont be jerking over the old days when you ruled the snooker world

  • griffiths is pissed up on gin

  • Sure acted like it when he finished the clearance, huh?

  • I really miss seeing the players having a drink and a smoke. Good ol' days.

  • The grinder was one hell of a player!!!

  • I believe the highest ever score by a player in a World Championship frame is 167 from Dominic Dale - a 122 break, another red earlier on, and eleven consecutive misses from his opponent.

  • cliffs so slow its a wonder hes still not making this 147

  • perhaps someone can enlighten me a bit:

Ive read that Cliff played a stun run thro for the yellow, cos he didnt fancy playing a shot with a lot of check side. But from where im seeing, the shot is slightly off straight, couldnt he jus screw back for the green?

  • I've spoken with Cliff as he competes in exibition matches with a work buddy of mine and on one such occasion outside enjoying a smoke with him I asked a couple questions about this match..he would be the first to say it wasn't his finest game ever played and he made several poor shots but made remarkable recoveries...He could've done things another way but it worked out great right...that's snooker after all.

  • Fluke or no fluke its still a very well played break.

One observation is that Cliff, Steve Davis, & Ray Reardon arent particularly power players judging by the pace of their deep screws, but all hv a bloody mean tactical game. The power players eg Alex & Jimmy for instance can really pack in the power & pot brilliantly, but not positionally or tactically astute as the 1st 3 ive mentioned.

  • kirk stevens whatever happened him?

cliff down to earth bloke pity he didnt win the world back in 83

  • And it all started with a fluke ... go figure !! lol

  • reminds me of a song take it easy by the eagles terry:)

  • cliff is still running centuries where he plays in toronto[shooters billiards]still using that short stroke...last pro am i attended kirk stevens was running 9,10 11 blacks every frame

  • history! :-) i remember watching this!,was just a teenager.when he got to the yellow i remember thinking,oje,what a difficult yellow,especially under those circumstances!.great job cliff!. :-)

  • Given the circumstances, that was an incredibly difficult maximum; not an easy starting arrangement, for sure. Beautiful stuff!

  • if u want to learn to curve and do many other stuff check out my video on my channel

  • Lol you brits are funny when you're mad. Plum?

  • WTF? It goes from 14 reds on the table to a shot of Griffiths then back to the table and there's only eight reds left! The main part of the break where he has to navigate the pack is missing!

  • To quote a line from the movie scarface 'you cannot do better than that'

  • If you wan't to see better, check out Ronnie O'Sullivan's fastest 147!

    ;)

  • This is a caption written by the owner of this video. See for yourself.

This is a hitoric 147 break: The first 147 in the history of Snooker World Championship, the 2nd 147 in the history of TV broadcasting, and the 4th officially authorized 147.

I think the guy's just saying it's a 147! It's as clear as day to anyone who knows anything about Snooker!

  • The highest possible break is 155 with a free ball at the beginning. This one is a 147!!!

  • hah he smokes! never seen that in nowa days :D

  • does anyone know if there was a higher amount of points in a frame than 151

  • he starts it with a fluke ^^

  • The first four foul points do not count for the break! It is a maximum of 147. Pay attention.

  • After Cliff's first shot, it was evident that the snooker gods were with him. Have there been any more 151's.

  • LOL It wasn't a 151, it was a 147 MAXIMUM!!

  • LOL It was a 151. Griffiths fouled giving Cliff 4 points. 147+4=151. Pay attention!!!!!

  • can anyone put a version on with the original commentry

  • OttoBonn75, Don't waste your life being a plum!

He had 151 pts but the break was 147!!!!!!!!!!

    PAY ATTENTION!!!!!!

  • Of course his break was 147. Thats not what Im saying his final score was 151 and theres no arguing that. So what are u gettin all worked up about. And easy on the plum comments.

  • Yeah?????????? So why did you decide to try and correct me and say, your words?

LOL It was a 151. Griffiths fouled giving Cliff 4 points. 147+4=151. Pay attention!!!!!

IT WASN'T A 151......Stop commenting on stuff you have no idea about you plum!

  • What the hell is wrong with you. It was a 151 and thats that you ignorant old cow.

  • OMG!!!! You winding me up? Can you count? Do they let plums learn to count round your parts?

Please believe me, it was a 147!!!!!!

  • Never once did I say the break was 151. Do they let cows learn to read round your parts?

  • yes he scored 151 points, but the BREAL was 147. he scored 147 points in a row and not 151, thats the difference ok!!!!!!

  • Hooray for Canada!

  • WOW!!! AMAZING 147!

  • griffiths missed, had his cigarr, spirits, and looked beaten.

  • Gotta love the first red that started that 147 :) Great break anyways, much respect.

  • wow

  • steve davis made the 1st tv 147.won a lada for his trouble.

  • this is the most famous 147 and probably always will be, started off by a fluke and you have to remember that the pockets were slightly more tighter those days.

  • well he is a legend.. but then what if he is facing Ronnie at that time? He ll be stunned...

  • steve davis made the first televised 147 in the lada classic in 1982

  • is he the first man who makes 147??

  • acutally not. This is the first 147 in TV broadcasting.

  • @plumddvp actually its the first 147 in the world championships as steve davis was the first person to do a 147 on tv

  • true that mate...many claim its cliff as steves was only shown on local TV but ur right ski. Joe davis made the 1st ever one recorded tho...:-)

  • @plumddvp No that was Steve Davis with the actual first televised 147 in a major tournament. Sorry to correct you, but its true.

  • @plumddvp i thought steve davis was? there was some other vid saying steve davis was the first 147 on TV.

  • @J4Y3L steve davis is. this is just the first maximum IN THE CRUCIBLE. the first on tv was played one year earlier by davis

  • @plumddvp no, this is the first maximum in the crucible. the first on tv was played by steve davis in 1982

  • Ronnie O sullivan also scored a 147 in 5 mins ritez? if im not wrong...

  • You are perfectly right. And I've posted that world speed record 147 (5'20''). You can search and check it out.

  • Furthermore there was a foul beforehand. Its amazing f* 151 points!

  • wow. thanx for posting this!
