@ aitraining & kockeykaveman: To compare Rik and Alex is an insult to both. They are altogether different types of rock guitarists. They are true artists in their own individual rights. Rik an artist of scales and arpeggio and a hard rock approach, and Alex an artist of off-beat time-changing tremolos, feeling-driven fills and screaming single-notes with the more progressive Steve howe short of playing style. Really you just can't compare them. Listen to Beyond Borders and you see the difference
I remember the first time I saw a Triumph album in the rack as a teenager I dismissed it as a Rush rippoff being the Rush fanatic that I was. I would come to realize later on how different the two bands were and what a great talent and personality Rick Emmit is.
Rik Emmett Steve Morse wow very Cool. Rik Emmett is my Hero likes sus chordes and plays open chordes very Bluesy. Christ thats the World to me. His music is in the language I listen to and my soul follows.
i am a bit more partial to rush, but although people say that triumph is better/worse than rush, they're two different bands that are totally different. rush takes a really complex approach, and i wouldn't say that they really go crazy; they're reserved in comparison to triumph. triumph is really about rocking out.
i like both bands a ton, whichever way you look at it.
This is Rik Emmett's signature song, and what I really liked about the performance is how Rik altered the way in which he played it to make room for Steve to shine as well. It was very generous and shows his respect for Steve.
Phenomenal musicianship! Whatever happened to the great guitarists like these? So glad we have these videos to prove what real music was ... and could be again if people cared.
@RecordWarped Steve has been the guitarist for Deep Purple for over 15 years now, and Rik joined Gil and Mike to reform Triumph two years ago. Rock on both guys!
@RecordWarped They are awesome. For great guitarists today, listen to Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, Joe Bonamassa. Guys like that are incredible. Plus, Rik and Steve are both still around!
@b4d27 Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes are phenomenal guitarists. Thanks for the recommendation of Joe Bonamassa; I'll check him out! It's too bad more people don't support guitarists or real musicianship in general these days.
That was one of the COOLEST acousic pieces I have ever seen...Been trying for years to get all the basics down on this song, and now Steve Morse has to go throwing in a whole new dimension...
I've seen Steve many times and met him on two ccasions. Truly there is no nicer nor more humble guitar player out there. This is in light of him being one of the finest players out there so it's no small thing. the only thing wrong with the two songs they play is that Rik's guitar has a flat B string in "Up In The Air". Steve comments on this afterward and you can tell during the song that he's grokking on it. But hey - screw it - it's fun!
I saw Rick Emmett in a bar upstate NY in 1991. Before he played his most famous hit he spoke of his good friend Alex Lifeson who uses the term "GB's" to describe the chills you get from great music. He then said that he likes to call it....magic power and kicked off the song. Seen them both live and they both give me chills!
The correct answer is: "Neither" Music/Art are not a competition! How can one honestly judge ones interpetation of thier emotion while creating thier art?
They are both comming from completely different places at the musical table!
Rik is classically school trained, precise & quite predictable! Alex for instance is truly an instinctive player as opposed to a methodical player & thus affords him to truly create & have his own unique style!
@Sparky71870 WHOA NOW !!! that is a real big statement--first off i can tell you are not a musician by your foolish comment.Music like beauty is in the EAR of theholder, not a competition. Its like saying Beethoven is better than Bach or Mozart. Hendrix is better than EVH, Malmsteen is better than Uli jon Roth.Les Paul is better than DiMeola----- ridiculous. All have their greatness and are masters at their craft.
@wacmac1 Wow! And you accuse me of not being a musician. I actually do play a little guitar, though not as well as Rik or Alex. Tell me how I'm foolish because I think they are the greatest guitarists. Do you have opinions? If you do, you're a fool (according to your own statement). If you don't like Alex & Rik, just come right out and say it; don't bash me just because I do like them. By the way, I never said anything about it being a competition.
@Sparky71870 First off -i apologise for any offense toward you--and i Love both Emmit and Alex andnot to would be foolish. i am hyper sensative(to a fault ) when i judge opinions on music. and my apologies, i was venting, please dont take it personally.
@wacmac1 Ok. It's all good. Sometimes I get a little over-sensitive too, so don't worry about it. Besides, how can I hold a grudge against someone who obviously loves music as much as I do? And I apologize for taking your prior comment personally. So, no hard feelings.
@EndlesslyRocking well Rik Emmett is, because if you were at the US festival in 1983 like I was .....you would have heard and saw the works of a GODS solo that hot ass day!!! Love Alex too....but Rik is the best guitarist that ever walked GODs green earth.....atleast it was green in 1983. God BLess Randy Rhoads too,,,,who never , which everyone, who is anyone knows ,never reached his full potential.
@EndlesslyRocking I think Leif Erickson was better because he had the advantage of being a Viking. They could pretty much do anything they please with no consequences. Carry on.
@EndlesslyRocking Forgive me for making this assumption, but my guess is that you prefer Lifeson. Would I be right in this statement? You seem to respect his spontaneity over Emmett's styling. However, I must mention that Lifeson also took classical guitar lessons, but abandoned them so he could stay with Rush.
Music, originality, spontenaouty, emotion. Those guys enjoyed the hell out of themselves playing that song. Emit being honored to have Morse's willingness, Morse being honored by the invitation. "flubs, mistakes, errors" exist in music only to those that are "rookies". A true Master will consider a "change" as an opportunity to create something genious and original, never being heard before or since. i.e. Hendrix, I wonder if any of his solo's were ever identical, things that make you go hmmmmmm?
why as soon as people see two guitarist together they have to compare. they are both amazing. if you dont like one of them you can still respect that they can play their instrument better than any of us. they are both priveldged to play with each other.
Great people/Great song... this is what music is all about (human beings) on the same page. Genuine and sincere - unlike all that other "crap" floating around that "they" refer to as "music". Good for the soul...
why you humiliate Rik Emmett. . . something that I know is that there's a guitar player or players got to an incredible level that is not comparible with other. . .they develop there UNIQUE STYLE by leveling up themselves

"Dik" Emmitt is an 80s hair band douchbag,he sucks worse than CC DeVille. He doesnt even deserve to play guitar with Steve Morse. By the way,Steve does use classical right hand technique, fuckwad
Machine 1 - easy there junior...Triumph has been making records since the 70's. In that time, Rik was considered a killer rock player. He always showed respect to guys like SM. Don't forget that in the 70's, Morse played fusion. Rik asked his management in the late 70's to book The Dregs to warm up for Triumph. That takes balls and respect.
