  • I used to have some Felt albums, and always loved this song. Thanks for posting it.

  • elizabeth frazer backing vocals

  • @elvisconwy Thanks, I thought I heard her and scrolled down and you answered my question :)

  • magnifique chanson

  • So boss.

  • I love this song and the imagery in the video....but the energy of the song is inspiring...and video is somehow "dead". What a disconnect. Thanks for posting, though...It's very interesting.

  • @johnnyborealis

Well, first of all, music videos for non-mainstream artists were really not that flashy back then (what budget did they have really?) Even in the 90s they were pretty basic, some of Slowdive's videos are just imagery of nature or whatever. Second of all, I actually like how subdued this video is, because in my mind this track is so complex and larger than life, it's a nice juxtaposition. At least to me. YMMV of course

  • This is neither Slug or Murs...

  • @MyHipHopTunes Primitive painters >Primitive rap

  • @thesilvernymph slug is not primitive rap. but through you're eyes, any genre of music that consists of mostly black artists is less intelligent than those of white artists. i agree that rap can be meaningless, but no more than any other genre. most 80s rock (maybe felt too im not sure) is about having sex with women and doing cocaine. and you're calling this (youtube.com/watch?v=qEHTTFOwsDs) primitive? atmosphere is slug by the way. listen to the whole song, maybe it'll change your view of rap.

  • The only problem with the college radio station I listened to in the 80's was that they never told you what song it was they just played.

I bought every Cocteau Twins album I could find (loved every one of them, not regretting it in the least) looking for this song.

Wish I'd had the internet back then.

  • @mysticalrhythums Cool! I knew he looked too much like the guy from Apple Boutique :) What is he doing in this video?

  • Who's the guy with the 12 string guitar? Surely not Deebank.

  • @satandog yes I think you're right - I knew Maurice back in the 90's....

  • wasn't Maurice Deebank already out of the band by 87?

  • fantastic song

  • Lawrence could give Morrissey a run for his money!

  • @Caligula138 and Maurice Deebank is not falling short from Johnny Marr....LOVE "EM!!

  • Discovered Felt when Something Sends Me To Sleep came out on 7". One of the first records I ever bought... and one of the best. They still sound great!

  • GREATEST BAND IN THE WORLD

  • You should see MY trail of disgrace!

  • ahhhh memories dear old friend such a brilliant song. Felt were truly underrated but wont be forgotten, great music never dies. What a tragedy the stupid You Tube video to Fortune is, one of their best songs. Everybody should listen to Crumbling the antiseptic beauty....

  • always was a great track, would be nice to know where Martin is....and always loved liz's backing vocals she is ace....

  • Great fucking band. Missed.

  • @beowulven I missed this band completely! Never heard of them until i heard Nicky Wire talking about them on radio 2.

  • Luv you Liz!

  • music from the planet on which I wish to live.

  • @zazeify Really? Where you from then?

  • indie and post-punk music :) so fucking good sound

  • I hate to say this, I really hate to say this, but it sounds like that song by 4 nonblonds. Now dont get mad, mayhaps it came out earlier. If not, well???

  • @chuckdee121 typical doss youtube comment ...

  • @makesenseofthis If doss means real cool person, I definately agree, however, if it means stupid jerkoff, I'm in big trouble!!! Don't get me wrong, I love Felt, and this song, but, surely you must see simularity.

reply: I don't and stop calling me Shirley! HA HA!!!

  • @makesenseofthis Does doss mean brilliant??? ;-)

  • @chuckdee121 What song by 4nonblonds?

  • @MoontownMoss The obnoxious one they played on the radio. I cant think of the name, but it was a hit, and should be posted on youtube. Just click in 4nonblonds, and when you see the clip with the grubby looking chicks, that's the one!

  • Doherty looks like Lawrence somehow, but Smacky Pete will never get to reach him.

  • @NWRA1957 Don't knock on Doherty man...

  • this is seriously my favourite lyric ever

  • Best Band ever. What a genius!

  • awesome

  • An old, old favorite of mine, thank you for posting this!

The warbley little warped sound in the beginning = vinyl love <3

  • Love the Liz Fraiser backing vocals.

  • @kaguth good call. Is it her? it really does sound like her.

  • @kaguth ok just found out it is her, interesting. Not to familiar with felt, but have been a long time listener to Cocteau twnis and this mortal coil.

  • @FlorrieDugger This track was also produced by Robin Guthrie.

  • Great single from a great album. This should have led to some sort of commercial success but the next album Let the Snakes Crinkle Their Heads to Death was awful.

  • @Mossa64 - I have a soft spot for 'Snakes' but yes you are right, it was commercial suicide.

  • "I wish my life could be as strange as a conspiracy"

    Lawrence is brilliant!

  • One of my alltime fave songs! I Remember John Peel used to play it all the time on his 10pm show back in 1985.

  • OMG! Phil King is playing a 12-string! I knew it! He's not a bassist! Phil, WTH? That stuff you were slinging for Lush was so terrible compared to this! I'm #31,694 on 9/25/09. I gave this gem five stars.

  • @Blastbarnacle

    P.K. is died....

  • that's Maurice Deebank on 12-string, the guy acutally doing the leads and possibly even the break that Lawrence mimes. great clip though. Thanks!

  • I just discovered this band and it is great !

  • The atmosphere is so amazing...^^

I guess that is one os the greatest cute songs of ethereal.

Remember me when I was a teenager. :D

  • Sensacional !!!! Tocava direto no Cais...Saudades

  • Grande onda FELT !!!! Como é possível ter perdido o Show deles no finzinho dos 80's no Rivoli (Porto/Portugal) ...

  • curto demais esse som do FELT ... tenho uma coletânea em vinil onde saiu esse som ...

  • coisa fina !!!

    filmado no brasil melhor ainda!!

    é para poucos !!!

  • Oh really? The same thing happened to me! I was looking around for more (original 80's) Felt songs, and this trashy hip hop 'music' comes up. I couldn't exit out fast enough D:

  • Top one!!!!

  • Great I`m back in Time

  • If anybody's interested in any original recordings of the band message me because I have some original presses due to the fact my father (Nick Gilbert) was the bassist.

    Cheers.

  • that is soo cool. i love this song!

  • ugh i love this bands music but what a boring awful and dissappointing music video

  • i think the simpleness of the video is great and expresses the feelings i get from the song

  • I like this video. Not every video has to be flashy

  • i just don't think it matches the music. whenever i listen to Felt can almost feel a visiualization of your guitars dancing in the air to reach my ears while the singer tries to vocalization the beauty within the music. this video just aint doing it for me. great band and song regardless.

  • the video was obviously thrown together at the last minute. I don't think much thought went into it.

  • Epic. I remember when I bought the vinyl in 1987 in the Brazilian release occasion. My information about the band at the time was none. I heard "Primitive Painters" and bought the LP, just because this song. Was the most happy acquisition of my life: a vynil plenty of marvelous tracks and the discovering of a fabulous extraordinary band/artists.

  • The name Felt was inspired by the subime song"Venus",from the master piece"Marquee Moon"by Television.I Love them.

  • the other guy on the 12 strings guitar should be Maurice Deebank , the great guitarist who can't be compared to no other indie alternative guitar player

.. he left after this record

... it gave me chills , thank you

  • what are you saying you're kidding !!!

  • slug looked terible in his young days !

  • I hope your joking.

  • Great song from a fantastic band that was never fully appreciated in their time.

  • this isn't even about hip-hop or not...but the sound quality is horrible in my opinion

  • Yes, sorry, this is music for grown-ups.

  • Yes Liz Frazer and Lawrence on vocals here and in The day the rain came down, the producer was Robin Guthrie in the 12" and Ignite the Seven cannons and set sail for the sun LP.

  • liz?

  • great!!!!!so good!!!!

  • OMG one of my classic felt songs ever thanks soo much great era great miss and i still have the LP version from The Felt ^_^

  • wow, i could i have been in and around the alternative scene since 1977, and never heard such awesome music. Felt is my new treasure.

  • ten albums,ten singles,wheres the solo album.

  • Er, he went on to form a band called Denim instead. Check 'em out.

  • go-kart mozart too!

  • Indie just played this Gem.

    Lovely....

  • hey lawrence, you're still the greatest. hall of fame for this and lots of other felt evergreens.

hope to see your current band soon...

  • Not heard this for years so it's great to hear it again. One of my favourites and takes me right back to very happy times.

  • I wondered for years what this song was, who sung it. Then someone in the UK sent me the CD.

  • This song is amazing! One of the best songs of 80's. Lawrence's voice matched perfeclty with Liz Fraser's vocals. And this guitar makes me fly. Thanks for posting.

And Lawrence: You didn't failed. Felt was a band beyond of its time, that's all.

  • great band, their early 4 albums are great, when the guitars were on top and not the proggy keyboards

  • When Lawrence smiles, his face lights up the heavens, and a tiny teardrop falls from a friendly cloud, and the wind whispers, don't cry, everything will be alright, if only you've been felt.

  • @chuckdee121 how many times have you fantasized about sucking him off?

  • Christ this still sounds like a gorgeous wall of sound. Thanks for posting!

  • great!so good!!

  • Thanks for posting this, great song!

  • Primitive Painters shall be played at my funeral. What a song!
