alan cumming's recording is the best (mostly because the sound and the music arrangement kick ass) but joel grey is a much better performer of the part. If you see any of the LIVE performances of both the emcees, Grey is a thousand times more entertaining. SO they're both good in their own ways, but it is evident that Joel Grey has more talent.

@SaverinoMusic I think it's an overstatement that Joel Grey has more "talent". They are incredibly different performers. Grey is arguably more "entertaining" but I don't see him pulling off a credible Hamlet which Cumming did in his 20's. As far as their individual portrayals of the MC, I don't think it's possible to say one is "better" . They are on opposite sides of the theatrical spectrum. What is fascinating is that both men are able to effect us and fascinate us so many years later.
