What is amazing about Paul, well about John too, both were geniuses (genii?), is the versatility. He can do it all. Introspective romantic (The Long and Winding Road), deep hurt (You've Got to Hide Your Love Away), high energy drama (Medicine Jar), love ballads like this, and just about everything else. I mean, he has no boundaries. He can do it all, and he can do it with genuine emotion that makes you feel he has lived it.
Good post and info. It is also important to note in the case of this song that the version you have posted is the LP version. The single version of this tune is not merely a cut-down edited version of the LP track, but rather a completely different mix of the song which gives it a totally different feel and sound.
Loved this one when it was out....the basslines just smoke it all around......sorry for all those that blew this one off when it first came out....kudos to the connesieurs who know superb stuff when they hear it.
The word 'lucifer' means a bringer of light (from the Latin 'lucem ferre'). The planet Venus is also known as the Morning Star and Lucifer because it can be seen in the dawn sky.
I heard somewere that this was one of Pauls personal favorites but that the fans did'nt think that much of it, It will always be one of my personal favorites, thanks Paul for real rock n roll.
This song is the best song by the wings that was never a hit. I am shocked that this song did not go #1 in 1975. This is paul at his best being genious as usual.
This song is so good on all levels. The lyrics resonate, the guitar really rocks and the horn section blows the doors off. In fact it is so much better than all the other stuff he did that I wonder if someone else with a little more experience of the Blues had a hand in writing and producing it. For me, this is the only really good song he has made since the break up of The Beatles.
Lennon was very competitive with Paul. When Paul started Wings, Lennon retired from song writing. I think Lennon just threw in the towel against Paul.
@fullblowngenius : 'Like a Lucifer she'll always shine' , refers to Lucifer matches. The song suggests an incandescent beauty. It is also a possible reference to Romeo & Juliet. When Romeo sees Juliet for the first time he says 'O she doth teach the torches to burn bright'.
This is a mind-blowing, devastating song, maybe the greatest song of all time. I distinctly remember hearing it in Feb. 1976 when it was peaking on AOR radio, driving through the vast expanses of the midwest on a thawing winter afternoon after playing several sets of tennis in southern Illinois. Coming up on the latticed bridge that crosses the Wabash River into Indiana, the chords of the spectacular introduction burst out of the AM radio just as we bump onto the bridge. Just awesome!
I was 17 when this came out and to me it was a straightforward expression of what it's like to be confronted face to face with a really beautiful, really young woman, "Mother nature look at what you've done!". I think he puts it better in words and music than anyone else ever has done.
to ismaelleguia : definitively no ! I myself ''could expound nights and nights about the superiority of McCartney musical talent and genious, compared to John Lennon.
Ismaelleguia, you request about objectivity. Are you sure you are ? You look like old 60's debates about who is better : ''John or Paul'' ? In 21st century, this debate is closed. Paul has often proved he is musically higher than John (except if your are not musician and if your ears are dirty). Ismaelleguia, awake !

Brings back memories of going to lovers leap in Hot Springs, Arkansas after the football game on Friday night with the greatest friend in my life...LaDonna
What a fabulous tune. I see this as a summation of how he felt about putting Linda, his wife, on stage. Could be wrong, but that's just my thoughts on it. Love this.
@guitarknight10 Hi, I love Paul but couldn't make it to Mexico. I saw both shows at the Hollywood Bowl in March. I've seen Paul many times and am SO happy that he's singing Letting Go, Venus and Mars, 1985 etc. WINGS ROCK!!! Did you take video? What was the night like for you? Alison
@guitarknight10 I checked out your channel, Shine A Light In Mexico !!! Looks like you had a fantastic night with Paul! Your channel is loaded with good stuff. I never saw the Type O Negative version of Day Tripper before - cool.
I was 18 when this album was released. I lost it in my many moves, however my Wife which I married in 75 was able to get it for me a couple years back on tape. I never was able to see Him in concert so I really like the live videos. I never had a chance to see Zeppelin either so am glad for their videos as well. Thanks guys for the memories!
I Heard this when I was ten and the music I can always remember. Many a times I play it over in my head. Recently I play it to group of friends and they were surprise to find out it was a Paul McCartney's song. But they love it.
Venus and mars was overloaded with would be singles that this lost air play to rock show, magento and titanium man, medince jar, not to mention venus and mars. However to my mind this one should have been played more than it did. Just think of it as a twenty found in an old jacket pocket.
This is the LP version /mix of a truly great McCartney tune. The 45rpm mix of this song is vastly different, and is still not available on CD. It is well worth searching out a copy of the 45rpm single.
fabulous song. it started running in my head over and over, even though I hadn't heard it in 30 years. I looked for it here, and it is so nice to hear again.
Lucifer is a Latin word, literally meaning "light-bearer", which in that language is used as a name for the dawn appearance of the planet Venus, heralding daylight. Use of the word in this sense is uncommon in English, in which "Day Star" or "Morning Star" are more common expressions.

The intro sounds kind of like the intro to a Cheryl Crow song I used to hear a lot on the radio. What was that song? Oh yeah, it's called "My Favorite Mistake."
McCartney made the best businessdeals ever made by any rockmusician in the '70s. So if he was on speed all the time, perhaps more people should use it!
