Why the fu*k Russian goverment cancelled T-80 UM2 (Black Eagle). That thank had some outstanding solutions for problems which were and still are (even on T-90) present.
T-90 should be heavily upgraded and changed (design). Longer gun with at least 7,0 m barrel length, huge armor upgrade (NOT ERA), new POWERFUL engine (with at least 27 bhp/t power to weight ratio), ammo reposition to back of the turret with blast doors, autoloader to accept longer 125 mm rounds + faster rate of fire, electronics.

T-80 UM2 isn't outdated. Even today, 14 years later there's no mbt in the world which would match T-80 UM2 considering armor protection, firepower and maneuvarability (I read T-80 UM2 had approx. 50-52t , probably less, and 1500 HP engine which gives 29-30 HP/t).
So, it's armor exceed that one on Leo 2A6 (even on Leo 2A7).
French Leclerc has 27,5 HP/t (Wartsila V8 engine from Finland - curently the best tank engine today).
...also, many T-80's were lost in Cechenya due to very bad strategy and usage of these tanks. Using tanks to capture city with no infantry support and no helicopter support for tanks is beyond ridiculous.
Most of destroyed T-80 received approx. 7 hits with RPG in their weakest areas (afretall, Cechen rebbels known well T-80's flaws and advantages).

T-80 won't explode if beeing hit near the front tracks. If you hit place between turret and hull, you might blow the turret off cause of bad solution of ammo storage. Also, well placed hit on side skirts might have the same result.

Now with an autoloader fed tank, you would be down a man in both situations puting increased pressure on the crew who really don't need it.

Second, they dont share the same chassis.
Third, armour protection between the three differ greatly, a T-72M in Iraq had at best 30% of the protection a T-90A has, armour configuration has been greatly changed between the earliest T-72 to the latest T-90 variant, from basic steel to several variants of composite and reactive armour layouts.

I don't really get why the Russians are still building cheap mass produced tanks. Their biggest potential enemy is the U.S and it can vastly out-produce them in sheer numbers[ plus their tanks are more advanced]. The T80 was proven to be flawed in both Chet wars, and in the first gulf war In Basra 6 challenger tanks destroyed 80 T-72 tanks and other armored vehicles.
Now I am not saying the T80 is a bad tank, it was just outclassed unlike the T90 which is a very formidable tank, and one I would not want to face in battle.

Having served 22 years in the British Armoured Corps (Tanks) I can reliably inform you your theory is utter crap.
I was on ranges watching Challenger heat rounds take out these tanks . They were very old technology (updated T64) that could not compare with Challenger, Abrahams and Leopards.
In 1993 the UK found many flaws and weak points, indeed it was very vulnerable to attack helecoptors which NATO had many.
The T80 was never proven in war, unlike the challenger and abrahams

Russians are the tanks masters, they know how to do great machines.
Their tanks have always been the best of the world at their period :
T34 in 1940, T34/85 in 1943, T55 was in early 50's, T62 with its 115mm smoothbore was in 1960's, T72 but more T64 was the best tank ever in late 60's, early 70's, T80 was the most powerful machine around in late 70's, 80's, T80U is surely one of the bests tank in the world,

For pure technical aspect, yes, but history proved that number and low cost effective machines are better than small number too sophisticated machines.
Nowadays, Russian tanks are not cheap machines as before, they are sophisticated enough, but still rough and tough for dirty war ;)
Leo2 is a very good tank, but i prefer russians T-80U and T-90, i like M1 lates versions too, it was proven as an effective MBT, and very heavy armor

@PATRONSKiii also the large numbers of the T-34 was effective because of the terrain... the battle of kursk is fought on a very wide area therefore theres plenty of room to maneuver all those thousands of t-34s... if the battle was fought in a more enclosed area... i think the germans stands a better chance where not much t-34s can be fielded at once... where the t-34s advantage of superior numbers dont apply

You should not take example of kursk, in pure tactical terms, germans totaly won this battle (destroyed thousands vehicules/canons, werheas they lost very few tanks)
But because of their impossibility to continue the battle, russians with their huge reserve counter attacked and won.
More over, T34 was more a target than a killer, up to the apparition of T34/85, where the balance inversed

@gazakind First of all They probably wouldn't. They way the hold it, the only was it could drop would be if the tank was hit with a round and it threw the loader to the ground. Second, While in the field, A Tank with a crew of 4 had 4 hands to maintain the tank. With the Commander gone for a field breifing or such, that still leaves 3 hands. Now with an autoloader fed tank, you would be down a man in both situations puting increased pressure on the crew who really don't need it.

First of all, you dont qualify to educate me while not being able to make out the difference between a T-80 and a T-90.
Second, they dont share the same chassis.
Third, armour protection between the three differ greatly, a T-72M in Iraq had at best 30% of the protection a T-90A has, armour configuration has been greatly changed between the earliest T-72 to the latest T-90 variant, from basic steel to several variants of composite and reactive armour layouts.

No, the plating isn't the same, as I have said the armour's materials are different.
The T-64 originally had a 115mm, later it had the 125mm.
The T-64 has a hydropneumatic suspension, T-72, T-80, and T-90 do not.
The T-84 has welded turret, and the T-84-120 has be fitted with a 120mm gun.
Just because they look similar on the outside, does not mean they are the same inside.

engine: GTD-1250 turbine (1250 hp)
power/weight ratio: 27.2 hp/tonne
transmission: manual, 4 forward, 1 reverse
speed: 70 km/h (road) - 48 km/h (offroad)
If T-80U weighed 62 tonnes, it would be even slower and have weight power/weight ratio. Abrams has 1500hp gas turbine and goes a little slower than Leopard 2 by 2.3km/h

On some russian forum there are military men, who know about T-95 and can told u non-secret information about T-95 :) Such as 152mm gun, which can fire both projectiles and misseles, uninhabited tower, crew armored capsule, very low profile, new generation of composite armor and reactive armor. New fire control system and active defence system.
On their mention T-90 in compare with T-95 is same, as T-34 with T-72. Completly new generation of tank.

Anyone knows Russia is not a third world country, and they have low costs of manufacturing, research and maintenance. They have everything they need, the infrastructure, lots of educated people, abundance of raw materials and they pay lower wages than western countries. According to some experts, you could build a hypothetical 4 million dollar american tank in Russia for less than 1 million.

Not many engineers want to work in the defence industry. It pays nothing like private sector and difficult to get a passport.
Thats why the next generation MBT T-95 is so late.
Maintenance is a big problem also in Russia. Out of the 22000 tanks they have only 5000 are in service.
Also it is cheaper to built stuff in Russia,, but relative to the economy just as expensive.
The economy of Russia is way way way smaller as its western counterparts. Because GDP is calculated to PPP.

I don't really get why the Russians are still building cheap mass produced tanks. Their biggest potential enemy is the U.S and it can vastly out-produce them in sheer numbers[ plus their tanks are more advanced]. Surely,it would make more sense for Russia to develop smaller numbers of very advanced tank designs instead?
