i think the thanet council must have been residents of the deaf n dumb institute to dumb to see the demise of margate n to deaf to listen to the people who wanted it to be rebuilt
Yeah I was shocked when I visited Margate. It's a place for down and outs and dirty immigrants. Never knew what it was like "back in the day" but it's sounds a 100 times better than it is now
What sort of a country allows a gem like Margate just degenerate into the tip that it now is? If I had the power I would ressurect every Kent politician from the past 50 years and not allow them to rest in peace until they put back into the condition was before it fell into their care. I could cry over Margate and I don't even live there.

it is sad,i have been to margate a lot in my life and did notice it rapidly decline(much like the rest of the country with its open door policy)BUT southend on sea was starting to do the same and have you seen it lately? its getting like the south of france!!!,i reckon margate will come back and when it does work hard to keep it going...ps only fools and horses jolly boys outing was about the last of it being great in my mind :)

Margate is sadly a skeleton of what it used to be back in the day. Run down and over-run with refugees and economical migrants from all over eastern europe and north africa, bringing crime and poverty to the area, it's no joke ! The Council needs to disperse these people out of the area in making a start to rejuvenate Margate. They should also disperse Mr Godden who had a big part in the destruction of Thanet. All his businesses were burnt down and never re-built. Ruins are all that remain now.
my uncle don had the blacksmiths forge in birchington and he did all the repairs to the pier and the bits that they could not blow up was what he repaired in the late 70s and in the 80s.
As a Margate girl born & breed it makes me sad to think the town has lost its way, but dont think it's just Margate, I now live in Somerset and Weston Super Mare is run down
At least our council do try & help.We have just had a big wheel put up for the summer on the sea front. We do get lots of people coming down from the mid-lands and over from Wales they might only come for a day but they do spend money & that is what a Sea- side town needs that & a coucil who want to help
People who only know Margate and Cliftonville from the last 25 years will have no conception whatsoever about how bouyant and popular the place was until around the mid 70s. Time has not been kind but we have fond memories
i lived here all my life and as a kid margate was a fun exciting place to live a some parts nice to look at looking at old photos of i can see why it had its rep like the winter gardens a few pics of dane park i have seen were truley amazing what a place its a dame same its all gone and now we are just left with a shit hole rele nice video injoyed it cheers
the amusement park has been left standing empty for a number ofyears, but i drive past it every day to go to work and i notice they are clearing the debre away... not sure what there planning tho
At 3.06 you see some steps at Dreamland. Those steps formed a terrace at Margate FC who played at Dreamland in the 1920's before the move to Hartsdown Park
Thanks for sharing your fabulous collection of photographs. Memories for me of many happy times visiting and holidaying in Margate during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. I've recently uploaded to 'youtube' my own compilation of photos and movie memories of Margate and Dreamland which I'll link you to as a Video Response - and I hope you'll enjoy viewing my little contribution.
I was in Margate last year (June 2007) to visit friends and after watching this I can see why you would be saddened at the changes. I did notice a lot of new growth and maybe some good times lie ahead. When did the Pier burn? You have lost some beautiful Piers in your country due to fires. At times it saddens me to think that some of America's uglier traits have become popular in England - a place I have always gone to escape just that. Thank You and I have added your work to my favorites list.
Thank you for your comments. Your views are interesting and I agree that work is being done in Margate. Sadly; too much has been allowed to "slip" for too long in Thanet generally and there is much catching up to be done. Time will tell.
The wonderful old victorian pier that I fished from as a little boy was finally destroyed in a violent storm in 1978.
Did some homework tonight and discovered that information about the Pier. One website mentioned that the sea-end part of the Pier remains as an island at sea. I could find no pictures showing this - is this true? I was also saddened to find out about the Scenic Railway fire in April. I wonder why I did not see this roller coaster during my 2007 visit. I was staying at a Hotel in Cliftonville. I hope to return before long for another visit with friends in Margate and Birchington.
Yes, so many lovely piers were either burnt down or destroyed by storms. As mentioned in lestermusicuk's comment the Margate pier was almost destroyed by storms. What was left was hard to get rid off. I can remember Southern Television covering the Army's attempt in using explosives but she would not budge. I think it took at least another two attempt to put her at rest. The pier with an island out to sea is in fact Herne Bay which is just a few miles from Margate. A pavilion for mermaids.
@tenterden16 the army failed to do any ' harm ' to margate pier , it was built in a time when things were made to last ! the business employed to remove and destroy the pier went bust due to the amount of time it took to remove it..........the thing that annoys me are the amount of people who call the harbour arm "the pier" - its not!
love the heritage of Margate - thats all it has left sadly!
