Wright's description of lost or fading humanity is quite reminiscent of C. S. Lewis' portrait of the Un-man in his Space Trilogy, as well as Lewis' metaphysical ideas of heaven and hell, both of which are expressed with intense physicality in The Great Divorce. I sense that Wright's explanation here is a subtle hat-tip to Lewis.
I've heard this video and read the transcript many times. I think Wright is essentially correct, but I also find my own thinking evolving, and being the brilliant man he is, I 'd wager his is as well. This is a great contribution to personal eschatological thinking.
Tank you for your understanding. You have a very humble spirit and yes there is a separation eternally from the love of God. I had a dream, or rather a sleeping vision that validated that question for me, so I made a video of the dream called last chance. You have to watch the video all the way through to really get it. It's called Last Chance by The Great Horseman
I'm not saying I have the answer but I don't see how you can deal with Hell without dealing with the etymology of the word itself.
Then you quickly see that Sheol & Gehenna (spelling?) are two different things. I think if you could study out each mention of the two in their original context & be as faithful as possible what it meant to the original audience than we'd be in a much better position to deal with the question of Hell.
1 Peter 3:“18 ¶ For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: 19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.”
Sorry people...I find Yaweh giving up on fixing some humans and throwing them to hell to be just not true. The more noble and more glory to god is to fix ever hitler human(all of us). I just dont understand why christians limit humans getting fixed by god to this life? Why not put them in a fake world until they try god? Even if it takes billions of years. Wouldnt that be more impressive of love or god to wait that long to pursue a lost life? Yaweh acts to damn human. 1.. 2... 3 go to your room!
The way to UNDERSTAND more about what the Bible says about what will happen to everyone, on the upcoming Day of Judgement - is to go online and RESEARCH all you can about it. You can simply Google ' Is Hell Literal?'. , OR 'Bible verses on Hell', ' All biblical verses about Hades, The Lake of Fire, Hell'. BY THE WAY- YOU will find out that HELL is an ENGLISH WORD, and is used in place of the word 'grave', and also 'HELL' to describe 'the pit' ( I think), and also ETERNAL HELL- BUT THE L
@caaam45 That would be coercion, I dont think God wants to do that. he wants to see who will choose him without intimidation. If i was a single rich man looking for marriage. almost every girl would take me because of the cash. but if I diddnt tell any of them that i was rich; then only the ones who truely want me for who i am will choose to be with me. Same with God and his people, he wants to know truely what our choices are.
Make no mistake about it, HELL IS REAL!!! If you are not born again as mentioned in the Bible, see my video titled "Warning: Four Types of People that are Hellbound". It’s a message I preached on the streets of Long Beach CA.
The Bible does not teach eternal punishment. God's love and mercy endures forever. Does it really endure forever or only in this life? How can it be Good News if it doesn't translate to the afterlife? God will still judge but He will not punish forever. Join in at whatthehellbook . com
1 Tim. 4:10 This is why we work hard and continue to struggle, for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers.
It is true what he says: Theres a very deep side of me that rejects god but a hugely deep side that loves god in ways i cannot understand for i have felt that love in me few times before but many times felt the rejection of god. I can never hate god for hes my only hope for peace i need him because all the troubles i am going through just so that i can be with him. I am a Christian and when i sin i feel that god is to blame but i know god is not to blame god loves me and wants to same me.

just a reply to nepsessu, just wanted to say that in order of a person to be muslim he/she has to believe in jesus but we believe in him as a massenger (prophet) of god but not god, thanks.
So if I'm a Muslim and I love and praise god all the time but I do not "believe" in Jesus Christ I'm going to go to hell right? Hmmm sounds very cruel. And I don't think God will ever do that to me or all the other innocent people who do not "believe" or even know who Jesus Christ is..
@nepsessu "So if I'm a Muslim and I love and praise god all the time but I do not "believe" in Jesus Christ I'm going to go to hell right?" You misunderstand the concept of hell. When you break a law, you're punished. When you sin, you've broken a law, therefore, you must be punished. Jesus took the punishment that humanity deserves but you have the freedom to take the punishment (hell) yourself by rejecting Jesus. It's entirely up to you.
@nepsessu Hi, just wanted to say that in order of a person to be muslim he/she has to believe in jesus(peace be upon him) but we believe in jesus(bpuh) as a massenger (prophet) of god but not god, thanks.
Notice that the verse says believe "in". Generally when you believe in someone your actions are shaped by their behaviour. The key here is not solely to believe that Christ is God, for as the bible says, even demons believe that God exists. But rather to follow the teaching of Christ by believing in Him. You don't have to necessarily be a Christian for that, but you're somewhat cheating yourself if you want a genuine crack at it I suppose.
yes. Wright denies that God PUNISHES SIN, for the word punishment is not mentioned by him in this talk.
Hell is not only a separation from God that we choose (which idea Wright seems to have got from C S Lewis' "The Great Divorce"). Hell is active punishment. and if he does not care to take this from scripture where it is plainly and repeatedly stated, i do not care to take anything from this man who does not know what he is talking about, bishop or not
The Western way of thinking has eroded the core of Christianity. Christianity began and was bred in an Eastern, oral culture. Far from the linear, sequential mindset of the West that likes to categorize things like heaven/hell, saved/unsaved, black/white. We need to begin looking at the Bible, Jesus, and God through the lenses of the original audience whom it was intended. Then we can make adequate applications for us in the West.
God is in hell and punishes people there. The guilty “will be tormented in burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and the Lamb, and the smoke of their torment rises forever and ever” (Revelation 14:10-11). The Lamb in Revelation is Jesus. Hell is not so much eternal separation from God as it is the eternal presence of God in unmitigated wrath and fury.
@qptqpt Rev 22:1-2 "And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the mist of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bares twelve manner of fruit, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the HEALING of the nations." Not sure exactly what it means but it is a hopeful verse that there will be a project of healing in God's new world here.
@qptqpt Respectfully, I think it is important not to take the text in Revelation in a straight forward literal sense. The text of Revelation 14 is very vivid and terrifying language describing how terrible it is for people to reject their humanity and the creator God and that not everyone will be part of the coming kingdom. I don't believe it is anymore refering to a literal torture chamber with fire any more than than I believe it is telling us that Jesus is literally a sheep.
Hell is punishment. It’s not “just what happens” to people. It is punishment at the hands of God. It is God’s contempt of people (Daniel 12:2), it is being “condemned” by God, like in a court (John 5:29). It is God’s just “payback” for sins (2 Thessalonians 1:6), when Jesus “will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel... They will be punished.” (v.8-9).
Everyone goes to hell. Jesus Christ and those “in Christ” are the only exceptions. All who “do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ” are sent to hell (2 Thessalonans 1:8). Those who turn to Jesus are saved. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.... Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already” (John 3:16, 18).
is this another high church man deciding what he does not like? even if the fire is metaphor, and I do not believe so, it will be eternal torment, and it will be eternally the wrath of God. modern man hates this and will deny it vigourously. IMOI this is where Wright is coming from
the sheep and the goats will be separated, and Wright quibbles when Miochelangelo portrays this?
@Gamer1990100 Exactly! Heaven is not just a place, it is reality. You can either live in the reality of God which is eternal or you can refuse to believe in that reality and create your own misconception of it. Either way, you're still in reality (heaven) but you just don't want to know it. It's like if I were to believe that the only existence was inside my own house. I may believe this but I am most definitely living a sheltered life not outside of reality. Does that make sense?
@aznmessenjah if memory serves me correctly an archimandrite is the head of a monastery, probably corresponding to abbot, a head of a monastery in the West
@Strefanasha Sort of. An Archimandrite may be an abbot, but need not be. It's simply an honorary title for unmarried (monastic) clergy. The married equivalent is Protopresbyter (Archpriest). The title of Archimandrite is often given to widowed Priests.
Some of what he says is good.Like how he says our choices here is more important. And that hell isn't real fire indefenitely, but the fire figurtively shows the suffering of seperation from God.However he leaves out that it is only by the work of God we can be saved from our unrighteousness. Thus by accepting christ and following him.Sure if it was longer he would have got there though.
So the Devil Hell is anti-Theism with a progressivist shrinking of humanity?
The idea of "doing your own thing" instals neo-tribalism, favor, criticism taboos, political correctness values of nil indifference, apartheid, and everything about the reversionary state, called "Hell" as in Matthew's Gospel (8 refs), and "sin" in St Paul's letters, as though physical Fall refers to the 70AD Armageddon on Zion and the mental hell-sin to Nero's Draconian/Secular purity purgation obsessions, its cause.
I think Tom Wright has struck a balanced view. I heard a sermon on Easter Day where the last point was that the resurrection showed us what it is to be truly human, and I thought 'Yes'. Hell is rejecting true humanity, and putting self at the centre. 'Perishing' in John 3:16 and elsewhere has to do with losing our true essence, and that is hell
As an Eastern Orthodox Christian, I find myself in agreement with Bishop Wright on this and many other theological questions. The man is a consummate biblical scholar, and on the rare questions on which we disagree, I am made better by hearing his arguments, even if he does not ultimatelypersuade me. Wish he were ours!. I like to think that, ultimately, he is. "So then let no one boast in men. For all things belong to you...and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God" (1 Cor. 3:21-23).
@mjpottertx I prefer to think that we are all on the same team as members of the human race, rather than as members of the same ecclesial communion. God will sort all that out, don't you think?
Hell exists and it's located under the surface of the Earth.if your soul starts ascending after death and after leaving your dead body, you're headed for heaven, but if your soul starts descending, you're heading down to hell.
Uhh when you go to hell you are in chains getting burnt to death so bad you cant even die and you cant escape when God comes he will put Satan 1000000000000000000000000 worse torture than the normal people in hell suffering.
Thank you for this video. I have been arguing Annhilationism for awhile. It's disrespect to YHWH to think He would create us to torture us for eternity.
Many of people die for us in real life, why does Jesus matter? Was he not prophesied by man? Why should we believe in something that was from man and something that was established in the bronze age? There are many questions I have about religion. If you wish to debate this matter, message me.
Someone who isn't afraid of acknowledging what's actually written in the bible rather than what secular religions say. BTW, I never believed in a literal hell for this very reason.
@LolitaSupreme ok well the odds of that happening are the same a as a tornado going through a junkyard and coming out with a boeing 747 which is about 1/10 to the power of 40,000 so that's a 10 with 40,000 zeros after it =D (impossible)
@theUKatheist you know what I think is funny? The fact that your on a video about Jesus and god and hell. Your acting like oh it's soo stupid, but yet, you must care some because why else would you be watching this video? JESUS/GOD IS REAL!!! He's not Santa clause or the tooth fairy.....he's a mighty powerful god. And I know alot of people think that it's stupid but it's real and it will save you. (:
Question: When a man dies, God gives him special graces and blessings to decide where he should go himself. God gives him a scene, reviewing his whole life, what he has done in his life, and so God gives him graces to decide where he should go, according to his life. He has a free choice. question
So, He gives you so many graces you say, 'God, I don't deserve
The Bible says that every knee will bow. it also says that the current earth and heaven will disapear, and that a new earth and heven will come into being. I read a book called 23 minutes in hell, a good book for an image of the place.
@noobking111 so god wrote this book? otherwise how would anyone know what it would look like, plus how can anyone anywhere assert the idea that a heaven or hell exists with absolutely no evidence to suggest so . people need to grow up and stop living in fairy tales , god is not real! you all grew up and know santa isnt real. there is no difference, god makes you feel better about reality . just like santa did at xmas, GROW UP CHILDREN! GOD DOES NOT EXIST!
Where did Muhammad get his ideas about hell? Islam isn't a western religion, and his religious beliefs especially regarding hell were due to Christian influences.
I think the Eastern Orthodox just look for opportunities to try and one-up the CC, even if it comes at the expense of doctrine or committing the sin of envy.
Muhammad's understanding of Christian doctrine was extremely poor. He thought that the Trinity was the Father, the Virgin Mary, and their Son, Jesus. So, yes, Muhammad overliteralized Christian phraseology about hell.
@MrZardoz777 If you're responding to N.T. Wright and not to someone else, then be aware that this view of Hell has been alive and well within the Eastern Orthodox Church for millenia. It's the West that lost it.
@MunkyDrag0n well first he gives out signs to the entire world When people believed in him they moved spreading word. Note that people were killed by believing in him by being feed to lion, though they were happy and singing knowing they would be with god people saw how happy they were and converted. you know there is something that had to make those germs appear from no where when we were evolving he deos give you a choice, he deosnt progam you like a robot and commands u 2 believe in him
@bredmOnKeY177 Yes, but people are prone to lying and exaggeration. You know that. The old saying, "Don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you read." When people make incredible claims of God, they must give incredible evidence and that was hard in a world without paper or video. It would be far better for God to work another worldwide miracle. He should know his signs are not believable to people now. Science can explain signs without him. Even if it's not true it's BELIEVABLE.
The thoughts fo the mind and the desires of the heart are the soul. There is no bodily resurrection for those who deny the TRUTH and refuse to LOVE and this begins with acknowledging that Jesus is God in flesh and loving as God commanded. The Gospel then has a purpose. If there are dimensions beyond death, and only one of these dimensions includes a bodily resurrection which allows the soul to once again function, then hell is the absense of that functionality. This guy should read the Bible.
@littledudemark5 Don't worry. Believe in Jesus and you will be saved.
Search google for "got questions" and search that site for "Is Jesus the only way to Heaven"
Good people don't go to Hell but their is no one that is good except Jesus. All have fallen short to God but He offers His son Jesus as a way for forgivness. Romans 6:23 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in[a] Christ Jesus our Lord. Write me back if you would like to ask me anything.
@littledudemark5 If you're an atheist than you're not suppose to beleive in hell. But if god exist, I'm an atheist as well... He will forgive you, how do you expect to believe in something that there isn't even any proof of. God will understand why you didn't believe in him man. If there is any hell, then you wont be going there. As long as you're a good guy.
Some say that they couldn't believe in God who created an eternal hell. However, I could NEVER believe in a just God who DID NOT demand eternal punishment for sin in an eternal hell. Hell is literal & eternal. I'm currently doing studies on this subject with more videos to come. Check out my channel with Bible studies & sermons on the subject of hell. Jesus Christ is the only way to escape the wrath to come.
@littledudemark5 The bible says that hell was prepared for the devil and his angels. It was never made for people because God made a way that people would'nt have to go there. Jesus said "I am the way, the truth and the life and NO ONE comes to the Father but by Me". Asking Jesus to forgive you for your sins and come and rule your life is just the begining. You MUST repent of your sins and that means to turn around and head in the opposite direction.
There isn't such thing as hell: There are 7 levels - the level 1 is the lowest. It is a level of dark tormented souls- it is full of lamentations - with no colours - no plants - no LIGHT. God is in each & everyone of us. Whether we believe in him or not he can read in our heart and see whether we are in the Light or in darkness. God forgives us all but does not forget!
However, once people sell their sold they no longer belong to God - they belong to darkness for eternity.
thank you! if you don't believe in jesus christ as your lord and savior then you will go to hell. But what many ppl fail to realize what hell really is. Hell is a place where God is not. Everyone will go to hell, unless you accept jesus christ into your heart. There are more ppl in hell then they are in heaven. Why should God let you enter his kingdom when you don't even believe in him or try to worship him?
If possible even the very elect will be deceived. Obey Acts 2:38 and live Holy, u won't have to worry about hell. When one receives the Holy Ghost experience, they know for sure that God is real.
Unfortunately, the Bible does not agree with Mr. Wright. Read the book of Revelation... "Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire" (Rev 20:15, NIV). That pretty much sums it up; 'Hell' is a real place.
As someone who claims to be an authority in the knowledge of Scripture, it sure doesn't seem like he is actually reading his Bible. As a Christian, I find this quite disappointing.
@littledudemark5 Sad to say it, I don't want to believe it, but the answer is yes. But then the real truth is that you're not actually a good person. No-one is. We're all sinners, and so only by the shed blood of Jesus can we escape hell and go to be with God for eternity.
He is only partially correct. There is a literal hell. NDE's in the millions have confirmed this. Scripture has confirmed this. There is a judgment. And what awaits them is something that God does not want for them. Satan hates humans. God forced him to be a lesser form than humans. He rebelled and was expelled from heaven. Hell was created. He isn't in effect punishing humans on God's behalf. He hates humans. He is punishing them on his (Satan's) behalf. It is crystal clear what this all is.
@SuperGuitarman69 Concerning the experience of "hell" before the Day of Judgement, that might not be such an easy one to tackle. But in the Book of Revelation (and also in the Parable of the Sheep and Goats), it is very clear that Satan himself eventually gets punished in the Lake of Fire, and on the Day of Judgement, those whose "names are not found in the Book of Life" are also sentenced to this Lake of Fire.
first of all Hell dont exist people ,only the lake of fire where the wicked will be destroyed(forever dead)in the original text the words hades, gehenna, sheol are all translated whit the word Hell, and there is one more bad translation and that is the word Greek word aion is translated: forever However its real meaning is "Age". There are actually two meanings for the word "Age".. if you want the real truth about Hell come to my channel
Does he believe that the unsaved are annihilated when they die?
Also, surely the picture of one group of people going off to heaven (and the new earth) and another group going to hell is biblical e.g. Matt. ch.25 v.31-46, Rev. ch.20 v.11-15 and ch.21?
Demons are real. My partner and I were both possessed by them. They talked to us and told us the future that came true and we won alot of money by what they said. They made us think they were from God. Then they ruined our life so bad. When I prayed to Jesus for help that night One roared out of my mouth with the sound of a beast. They are not a joke. They are real.
@TheMissCcee LOL. please find me the source of this, why hasnt there been increased scientific interest if this was the case?
Also, NT Wright's argument is profoundly flawed- nobody in their right mind, when presented with sufficient proof would choose, in the face of the creator, to reject him. The problem is that people do NOT see sufficient proof of god(s) so therefore that is not a rejection.
it is completely unreasonable to send a soul to hell, just because of crimes committed in a short human life span. god loves us too much to do such an evil thing
@DethMetal4All101 so if i listen to what ur name is i go to hell cuz my mom and someone else said that my soul is condemned cuz i pretty much promote satanic music and im not satanic so.also plzz reply
i alwayz think of the dumb people who sell there souls on how they think there all cool. well there gonna live at least 70 years max. n then they go to hell for eternity. while us unfamous people go to heaven n hav a fun eternity. n people in hell. do they ever hav the time to breath? how do they not die in hell? how r u in fire for eternity? u become a skeleton wen ur skin iz all gone in jus lay there and unable to move while ur a skeloton? what happens!?
ANd to add to my last point, if this happens to be in a sovereign state that is secular in nature then tax providence to religious groups is sinful and thus those abrhamic religion flocks will definitely go to hell by the teachings of their faith. If it is not a secular state then they will go to their deluded heaven so that their deluded can congregate and fonticate together till kingdom come and I will assure you that they will hope it will come soonest after a while.
This is the result of 2000 years of dominance using a language perfected by con artist to gain power out of human stupidity to sponsor them to do so out of tithe.
To find out what the Catholic Church says about hell, we must look in the catechism: The teaching of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity. Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, "eternal fire."617 The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs.
Ask yourself how many times has Jesus been here to this planet and how many times in the future will he come.I think for eternity he has to come back when the world looks like this, overpopulated and ignorant. In the sistine chapel ,I dont think that is hell, that is a the worldwide deluge on the bottom part of the painting. The top part is all the people who got saved by Jesus before the last day.
Not one scripture was used throughout this entire video. Does anyone else find that frightening? Does anyone else find it strange how he talked around the entire issue and never really said anything?
Hell is what happens when we die and we have rejected the Salvation provided by Jesus Christ. If there was universal salvation He would not have had to die on the cross. Remembering always that you are given free choice, God is not willing that any should perish, but He will not force you to accept Him. I truly understand not wanting to, but at the very least read the book of John before you decide, the decision determines your eternity.
@6883a927 1/3 of the world is Christian. What about the 2/3 of the rest of the world? Is god just going to say sorry, you were good people but you didn't worship the right god. Or is there another religion which is correct. Can Judaism which is 1/300 of the worlds population be correct? I'm sure god wouldn't want to see the 99.3% burn in hell. Well I am monotheistic, but i don't agree with any of the religions out there. I think being part of a religion is more about image than worshiping god.
@dclaver2 I can give you what the Bible says. You might be surprised to learn that even though 1/3 of the world claims to be Christian, many are not. Jesus was very clear when He said He was the only way to the Father, John 14:6. You might also want to read Romans 1:17-20. Paul tells us that even those who have never heard of Jesus will know God by His Creation. You should keep in mind that true Christianity isn't a religion, it's a relationship with God through Christ. God bless
@6883a927 right that's a religion. Going back to the year 500 AD. only a small population of the world knew who Jesus was. People in India who are Hindu didn't know who he was. When they die, do they reincarnate like what they believe, or do the come face to face with god before god sends them to hell for not worshiping Jesus. They didn't even know who Jesus was at the time. Do you think that's fair. I honestly believe the thought of hell was a tool used by the catholic church to have followers.
@dclaver2 Do you bother to read the reply. Eph 2:8-9 it is appointed for man once to die and then the judgment. Reincarnation doesn't exist, just a man made illusion. Satan whom you may not believe in either does a lot to trick people. Religion is mans search for God, Christianity is God reaching out to man. Please look at the website and get the answers.

I am an agnostic. Deep down I don't reject a creator. I am always wondering why their is something rather than nothing and I get no answer. I hate how some religious smugly assume nonbelievers must be in deep denial. It must be the only way to rationalize the harsh judgment of their god.
I agree, there are too many variations out there, part of it is because those who are supposed to represent the truth look alittle too much like the world, and they keep the greatest news ever told to themselves by both their words and their lifestyle. Rather than preaching at others what I believe, I just try to tell them what God has done for me in my own life and encourage them to ask the One who made them for their own encounter, and He will never overlook a heart that seeks Him.. Peace
I don't agree with the video. I don't believe anyone is rewarded or punished for being good or bad in this life. Rewards and punishments are things that affect your ego, and you won't have an ego in the afterlife. Your ego keeps you from accepting that nothing here is real or important, it's just an experience. When you wake up from a dream, you're not worried about leaving behind things in the dream, and you won't be worried about life after you die.
@MattBaumann777 You are still yourself in the spirit land, and it is the real you, not a cloaked you as it is now. Check out "Life in the World Unseen", free download from the internet
I 98% agree. The exception is the idea of atheists being free. The main atheist regimes (Soviet, Maoist, Axis) were unfree. The main reason is simple. Simple people create irrational deity objects in their brains. All the atheist thinkers wanted a deified state, deified nomenklatura and multi-cult estates of power, deifed decisions and dictators, etc in violation of the 1st Commandment. God defeats such deifications
The simple choice is God of best decision-making versus atheist hells on Earth.
@cloudbusterman The Axis powers were plenty theistic. Hitler was creationist, Japan was Shinto emperor worship, and Italy was Catholic. In fact, Hitler said that God made him kill the 12 million social outcasts that he did.
@ChristianRootsMan ... then that would just fine by me actually. I think it could do with some editing by now, and be a much moral book as a result - even if it was still full of fiction.
@ChristianRootsMan but ... in any case as I said I don't really care about what the "real" intention behond the words of the people who wrote the bible was. As I said, I only care about what peopel do and believe since as far as I can see they are the only part of it that is real - so wether their beliefs are "correct" or "incorrect" dosn't interrest me. I care about how those beliefs they hold influences the world and other people. If you want to edit out all the horrible stuff in the bible....
Seems liek the man has made the exact same mistake of making up his own "reality" about what hell is - using version of the old "oh, hell isnt literally real, its just being seperate from god". Try reading what the bible actually says about it. It never says anything of the sort. Unless you twist the words to your own liking and invent your own meaning it does describe a place (or atleast state) of eternal torment. If it was just being apart from god, shouldnt atheists allready be tormented?
@TheStigma Well it's a bit more conmplex than that, Orthodox Christianity has maintained an idea of Hell very different from Protestant and Catholic notions. Also study a bit more on the four tersm which all translate hell. Which are Hades, Gehnna, Tarsus, Sheol these all have been taken out of context and all translated Hell when each mean different things. I'm not saying which is right, but search for yourself it's more complex that what people presume.
@ChristianRootsMan why would it matter what the traditions of the denominations are? They all use the same bible and all the same references to hell. Why waste time on listening to each denominations convoluted "mental gymnastics" that supports their own conclusion when I can go straight to the common source material and actually read it with my own eyes? I know the meanings of the different words for it yes - and none of them are described pleasantly in the bible if thats your point...
@TheStigma No but it also isn't as simple as, some will burn in hell for eternity, that was my assertion. Of course you have to look at the traditions, and look were the doctrines are derived from. It's how you understand various things such as how and why they don't allow women to play any vital role in liturgy yet they did until it became the religion of the Roman Empire. As at first religious practices were practiced mainly at home in some places so woman took a lot more important role.
@ChristianRootsMan all that context is very interresting and relevant if your looking at it from anthropology standpoint. Not so much when it comes to reading the "infallible word of god" of what happens to you after death. If these written things were actually the perfect word of god (which of course is rubbish), then it would have to be immutable and completely divorced from any social trends and such.
@TheStigma Plus they don't all use the same Bible, Catholics use the Vulgate (74 Books), Orthodox use the Septuagint (77 Books), Ethiopian Orthodox (Something like 81 Books), and Protestant/Pentecostal use the Masoratic Text (66 Books).
@ChristianRootsMan well, yes yes, and there are also some differences in translation too of course, but all the important core texts are there - and when books are not cut away then they do atleast contain the same stuff (aside from small translation differences). If you have a bible that dosn't actually say in plain words anywhere that hell is a place of eternal torment and suffering, id like to see it. Or one that says that hell isnt a place of torment for that matter.
@TheStigma Well that's what I'm trying to tell you, the translations have took the original words out of their context which gives the message a whole different meaning. If you're reading the infallible word of God than it can't be the word Hell nor eternal it would have to use the original words. Since these are only translations and some would conjecture mistranslations of the original notions and words used by the Greek Septuagint.
@ChristianRootsMan everyone uses the "true translation" argument. Basically if only we had a true correct translation in context that that would show how you are correct right? *sarcasm*
In any case it is largely irrellevant to me what the "real" words would be. I have no reason to regard it as anything but fiction anyway. What concerns me is what is actually being practised by most people - and that would be all the bibles saying in clear words that I desverse to burn for eternity for example.
@TheStigma So you're accepting what the majority of Protestant Christians say over the original translation of the Bible. So I see you're very subjective and selective in what you attack. I'm in no way saying that the Bible doesn't say anything about Punishment, Judgement, Eternity so on... but I'm just saying you have to understand what the Original Biblical words say before you can really derive a full conclusive decision of what notion of after life you believe in.
@ChristianRootsMan That is absurd. I should get a professors degree in historic litt. and learn ancient hebrew in order to study original manuscripts so I can properly make up my mind? Have you? No thank you. I have no problem judging religion by its followers, because its what PEOPLE do that actually matters. So, by extention if most people believe that people not of their faith deserve to burn, then that is a problem no matter what "hidden truth" you may wish for...
@TheStigma No because you can't decide how God will judge people because of some followers. Now that's ABSURD. Peoples own bias interpretation of a text isn't the arbiter of Gods judgement. (Continued)
@ChristianRootsMan All this you are saying is presupposing that there is a god. Not just a godlike entity, but some sort of personal god connected to christianity. In case you haven't picked up on it I am an atheist, and I see no reason to make that presupposition based on lack of evidence. So yes - the only thing I care about how people act - and religious convictions significantly affect a persons actions so therefore I care abut what people believe too.
@ChristianRootsMan As for accepting whatever you are told when you are little as truth - yes that is true for most people, but it dosn't preclude you from finding out things on your own if you are so inclined. My parents for example are technically christian prot., allthough largely secular. I was baptized and confirmed before I started thinking about religion, and our church never preached about hell or anything like that (very liberal/moderate). I was not told what I believe now - I researched

I just dont understand why christians limit humans getting fixed by god to this life? Why not put them in a fake world until they try god? Even if it takes billions of years.

Hi,
just a reply to nepsessu, just wanted to say that in order of a person to be muslim he/she has to believe in jesus but we believe in him as a massenger (prophet) of god but not god, thanks.
TheScholarsofislam 6 months ago
So if I'm a Muslim and I love and praise god all the time but I do not "believe" in Jesus Christ I'm going to go to hell right? Hmmm sounds very cruel. And I don't think God will ever do that to me or all the other innocent people who do not "believe" or even know who Jesus Christ is..
nepsessu 6 months ago
@nepsessu "So if I'm a Muslim and I love and praise god all the time but I do not "believe" in Jesus Christ I'm going to go to hell right?" You misunderstand the concept of hell. When you break a law, you're punished. When you sin, you've broken a law, therefore, you must be punished. Jesus took the punishment that humanity deserves but you have the freedom to take the punishment (hell) yourself by rejecting Jesus. It's entirely up to you.

This question is to anybody. When was hell created, and who created it ? Why didnt adam and eve go to hell ?
TheLoner83 7 months ago
God is in hell and punishes people there. The guilty “will be tormented in burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and the Lamb, and the smoke of their torment rises forever and ever” (Revelation 14:10-11). The Lamb in Revelation is Jesus. Hell is not so much eternal separation from God as it is the eternal presence of God in unmitigated wrath and fury.
qptqpt 7 months ago
@qptqpt Rev 22:1-2 "And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the mist of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bares twelve manner of fruit, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the HEALING of the nations." Not sure exactly what it means but it is a hopeful verse that there will be a project of healing in God's new world here.
jspittman 5 months ago
@qptqpt Respectfully, I think it is important not to take the text in Revelation in a straight forward literal sense. The text of Revelation 14 is very vivid and terrifying language describing how terrible it is for people to reject their humanity and the creator God and that not everyone will be part of the coming kingdom. I don't believe it is anymore refering to a literal torture chamber with fire any more than than I believe it is telling us that Jesus is literally a sheep.
jspittman 5 months ago
Hell is punishment. It’s not “just what happens” to people. It is punishment at the hands of God. It is God’s contempt of people (Daniel 12:2), it is being “condemned” by God, like in a court (John 5:29). It is God’s just “payback” for sins (2 Thessalonians 1:6), when Jesus “will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel... They will be punished.” (v.8-9).
qptqpt 7 months ago
Everyone goes to hell. Jesus Christ and those “in Christ” are the only exceptions. All who “do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ” are sent to hell (2 Thessalonans 1:8). Those who turn to Jesus are saved. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.... Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already” (John 3:16, 18).

"they wil be tormented day and night forever"
is this another high church man deciding what he does not like? even if the fire is metaphor, and I do not believe so, it will be eternal torment, and it will be eternally the wrath of God. modern man hates this and will deny it vigourously. IMOI this is where Wright is coming from

Gamer1990100 7 months ago
@Gamer1990100 Exactly! Heaven is not just a place, it is reality. You can either live in the reality of God which is eternal or you can refuse to believe in that reality and create your own misconception of it. Either way, you're still in reality (heaven) but you just don't want to know it. It's like if I were to believe that the only existence was inside my own house. I may believe this but I am most definitely living a sheltered life not outside of reality. Does that make sense?

'Perishing' in John 3:16 and elsewhere has to do with losing our true essence, and that is hell
ianat9 9 months ago
As an Eastern Orthodox Christian, I find myself in agreement with Bishop Wright on this and many other theological questions. The man is a consummate biblical scholar, and on the rare questions on which we disagree, I am made better by hearing his arguments, even if he does not ultimatelypersuade me. Wish he were ours!. I like to think that, ultimately, he is. "So then let no one boast in men. For all things belong to you...and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God" (1 Cor. 3:21-23).

Where did Muhammad get his ideas about hell? Islam isn't a western religion, and his religious beliefs especially regarding hell were due to Christian influences.
I think the Eastern Orthodox just look for opportunities to try and one-up the CC, even if it comes at the expense of doctrine or committing the sin of envy.
nymphrenic 11 months ago

Muhammad's understanding of Christian doctrine was extremely poor. He thought that the Trinity was the Father, the Virgin Mary, and their Son, Jesus. So, yes, Muhammad overliteralized Christian phraseology about hell.

Jesus Christ is the only way to escape the wrath to come.
watfordssermons 1 year ago

SuperGuitarman69 1 year ago
@SuperGuitarman69 Concerning the experience of "hell" before the Day of Judgement, that might not be such an easy one to tackle. But in the Book of Revelation (and also in the Parable of the Sheep and Goats), it is very clear that Satan himself eventually gets punished in the Lake of Fire, and on the Day of Judgement, those whose "names are not found in the Book of Life" are also sentenced to this Lake of Fire.

Hell is what happens when we die and we have rejected the Salvation provided by Jesus Christ. If there was universal salvation He would not have had to die on the cross. Remembering always that you are given free choice, God is not willing that any should perish, but He will not force you to accept Him. I truly understand not wanting to, but at the very least read the book of John before you decide, the decision determines your eternity.

trayguy 1 year ago
@6883a927 1/3 of the world is Christian. What about the 2/3 of the rest of the world? Is god just going to say sorry, you were good people but you didn't worship the right god. Or is there another religion which is correct. Can Judaism which is 1/300 of the worlds population be correct? I'm sure god wouldn't want to see the 99.3% burn in hell. Well I am monotheistic, but i don't agree with any of the religions out there. I think being part of a religion is more about image than worshiping god.
dclaver2 1 year ago
@dclaver2 I can give you what the Bible says. You might be surprised to learn that even though 1/3 of the world claims to be Christian, many are not. Jesus was very clear when He said He was the only way to the Father, John 14:6. You might also want to read Romans 1:17-20. Paul tells us that even those who have never heard of Jesus will know God by His Creation. You should keep in mind that true Christianity isn't a religion, it's a relationship with God through Christ. God bless
6883a927 1 year ago
@6883a927 right that's a religion. Going back to the year 500 AD. only a small population of the world knew who Jesus was. People in India who are Hindu didn't know who he was. When they die, do they reincarnate like what they believe, or do the come face to face with god before god sends them to hell for not worshiping Jesus. They didn't even know who Jesus was at the time. Do you think that's fair. I honestly believe the thought of hell was a tool used by the catholic church to have followers.
dclaver2 1 year ago
@dclaver2 Do you bother to read the reply. Eph 2:8-9 it is appointed for man once to die and then the judgment. Reincarnation doesn't exist, just a man made illusion. Satan whom you may not believe in either does a lot to trick people. Religion is mans search for God, Christianity is God reaching out to man. Please look at the website and get the answers.

I am an agnostic. Deep down I don't reject a creator. I am always wondering why their is something rather than nothing and I get no answer. I hate how some religious smugly assume nonbelievers must be in deep denial. It must be the only way to rationalize the harsh judgment of their god.

dclaver2 1 year ago
I agree, there are too many variations out there, part of it is because those who are supposed to represent the truth look alittle too much like the world, and they keep the greatest news ever told to themselves by both their words and their lifestyle. Rather than preaching at others what I believe, I just try to tell them what God has done for me in my own life and encourage them to ask the One who made them for their own encounter, and He will never overlook a heart that seeks Him.. Peace
Drooblemeister 1 year ago
I don't agree with the video. I don't believe anyone is rewarded or punished for being good or bad in this life. Rewards and punishments are things that affect your ego, and you won't have an ego in the afterlife. Your ego keeps you from accepting that nothing here is real or important, it's just an experience. When you wake up from a dream, you're not worried about leaving behind things in the dream, and you won't be worried about life after you die.

KDaugherty15 1 year ago
@ChristianRootsMan ... then that would just fine by me actually. I think it could do with some editing by now, and be a much moral book as a result - even if it was still full of fiction.
TheStigma 1 year ago
@ChristianRootsMan but ... in any case as I said I don't really care about what the "real" intention behond the words of the people who wrote the bible was. As I said, I only care about what peopel do and believe since as far as I can see they are the only part of it that is real - so wether their beliefs are "correct" or "incorrect" dosn't interrest me. I care about how those beliefs they hold influences the world and other people. If you want to edit out all the horrible stuff in the bible....
TheStigma 1 year ago
Seems liek the man has made the exact same mistake of making up his own "reality" about what hell is - using version of the old "oh, hell isnt literally real, its just being seperate from god". Try reading what the bible actually says about it. It never says anything of the sort. Unless you twist the words to your own liking and invent your own meaning it does describe a place (or atleast state) of eternal torment. If it was just being apart from god, shouldnt atheists allready be tormented?
TheStigma 1 year ago
@TheStigma Well it's a bit more conmplex than that, Orthodox Christianity has maintained an idea of Hell very different from Protestant and Catholic notions. Also study a bit more on the four tersm which all translate hell. Which are Hades, Gehnna, Tarsus, Sheol these all have been taken out of context and all translated Hell when each mean different things. I'm not saying which is right, but search for yourself it's more complex that what people presume.
ChristianRootsMan 1 year ago
@ChristianRootsMan why would it matter what the traditions of the denominations are? They all use the same bible and all the same references to hell. Why waste time on listening to each denominations convoluted "mental gymnastics" that supports their own conclusion when I can go straight to the common source material and actually read it with my own eyes? I know the meanings of the different words for it yes - and none of them are described pleasantly in the bible if thats your point...
TheStigma 1 year ago
@TheStigma No but it also isn't as simple as, some will burn in hell for eternity, that was my assertion. Of course you have to look at the traditions, and look were the doctrines are derived from. It's how you understand various things such as how and why they don't allow women to play any vital role in liturgy yet they did until it became the religion of the Roman Empire. As at first religious practices were practiced mainly at home in some places so woman took a lot more important role.
ChristianRootsMan 1 year ago
@ChristianRootsMan all that context is very interresting and relevant if your looking at it from anthropology standpoint. Not so much when it comes to reading the "infallible word of god" of what happens to you after death. If these written things were actually the perfect word of god (which of course is rubbish), then it would have to be immutable and completely divorced from any social trends and such.
TheStigma 1 year ago
@TheStigma Plus they don't all use the same Bible, Catholics use the Vulgate (74 Books), Orthodox use the Septuagint (77 Books), Ethiopian Orthodox (Something like 81 Books), and Protestant/Pentecostal use the Masoratic Text (66 Books).
ChristianRootsMan 1 year ago
@ChristianRootsMan well, yes yes, and there are also some differences in translation too of course, but all the important core texts are there - and when books are not cut away then they do atleast contain the same stuff (aside from small translation differences). If you have a bible that dosn't actually say in plain words anywhere that hell is a place of eternal torment and suffering, id like to see it. Or one that says that hell isnt a place of torment for that matter.
TheStigma 1 year ago
@TheStigma Well that's what I'm trying to tell you, the translations have took the original words out of their context which gives the message a whole different meaning. If you're reading the infallible word of God than it can't be the word Hell nor eternal it would have to use the original words. Since these are only translations and some would conjecture mistranslations of the original notions and words used by the Greek Septuagint.
ChristianRootsMan 1 year ago
@ChristianRootsMan everyone uses the "true translation" argument. Basically if only we had a true correct translation in context that that would show how you are correct right? *sarcasm*
In any case it is largely irrellevant to me what the "real" words would be. I have no reason to regard it as anything but fiction anyway. What concerns me is what is actually being practised by most people - and that would be all the bibles saying in clear words that I desverse to burn for eternity for example.
TheStigma 1 year ago
@TheStigma So you're accepting what the majority of Protestant Christians say over the original translation of the Bible. So I see you're very subjective and selective in what you attack. I'm in no way saying that the Bible doesn't say anything about Punishment, Judgement, Eternity so on... but I'm just saying you have to understand what the Original Biblical words say before you can really derive a full conclusive decision of what notion of after life you believe in.
ChristianRootsMan 1 year ago
@ChristianRootsMan That is absurd. I should get a professors degree in historic litt. and learn ancient hebrew in order to study original manuscripts so I can properly make up my mind? Have you? No thank you. I have no problem judging religion by its followers, because its what PEOPLE do that actually matters. So, by extention if most people believe that people not of their faith deserve to burn, then that is a problem no matter what "hidden truth" you may wish for...
TheStigma 1 year ago
@TheStigma No because you can't decide how God will judge people because of some followers. Now that's ABSURD. Peoples own bias interpretation of a text isn't the arbiter of Gods judgement. (Continued)
ChristianRootsMan 1 year ago
@ChristianRootsMan All this you are saying is presupposing that there is a god. Not just a godlike entity, but some sort of personal god connected to christianity. In case you haven't picked up on it I am an atheist, and I see no reason to make that presupposition based on lack of evidence. So yes - the only thing I care about how people act - and religious convictions significantly affect a persons actions so therefore I care abut what people believe too.
TheStigma 1 year ago
@ChristianRootsMan As for accepting whatever you are told when you are little as truth - yes that is true for most people, but it dosn't preclude you from finding out things on your own if you are so inclined. My parents for example are technically christian prot., allthough largely secular. I was baptized and confirmed before I started thinking about religion, and our church never preached about hell or anything like that (very liberal/moderate). I was not told what I believe now - I researched
