Used to be if you played any music you had to make it at least 20% different to avoid copy right laws. Van Halen has 4 players, Kens stuff did not have the singer, that's 25% right there alone, plus he did not play the guitar 100% exactly like eddy did, so now you have at least 33% difference, then you take into account for the base and drums and now he's playing 50% different, so who's the real fucking crook, sure in the hell isn't Kent!

Kent was amazing. I think it's disgusting that he played his covers so well that they're considered copyright infringement when there are plenty of other covers out there on YouTube that don't catch any heat.

Just want to say that while KC infringed the copyright, I believe because of his unique camera angle, his videos could be labeled tutorials.Thus, "Fair Use" under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. At least in the USA. Also, If he stuck to using backing tracks, his improvisations and camera angles could possibly be considered "Parody".
Weird Al gets the artists' blessing before doing a song, but the DMCA doesn't require it.
Also, in very few cases can you blame the artists. Anyone who has even partial ownership of the publishing rights can issue a take-down notice. I seriously doubt that EVH or ZZ Top care if his videos are on YT. It's usually the record companies using their gestapo agents in the RIAA that send take-down notices.
Bottom line is if you put up a video, make it a tutorial. Then it' may be considered "Fair Use" for educational purposes.

I was playing VH back in the day and was working out alot of the songs Carlevi did on YouTube I found him to be dead on and watching his videos I was able to catch the parts I was missing,,,, I was really bummed when they took him down, It's funny because all the songs he does I was working on back in 96. I am actually an attorney in the U.S. and I have represented a commercial musician in certain matters via which I gained familiarity with certain music industry practices.
One fact that many people do not know is that the songwriter (not the performer) actually owns the music under U.S. Copyright laws. So, unless the performer is also the person who wrote and copyrighted the song the performer does not control the rights to it.
Furthermore, as part of most recording contracts, some degree of the rights to the tracks that appear on any releases resulting from the contract become the property of the music label. So, even if the artist does not object to use by third parties, the label that partly owns the song may object and may forward a takedown notice to YouTube.
Kent must be brought back. He's one of the best players I've ever seen. Style, grace, skill, chops, taste. He's got it. I think it's silly that he was nail with copyright bullshit over covers that were stated as such. Even each artist in his covers were given due recognition for their work. I think the fact that others are putting up his videos, just amazing. If anything, he should be signed or something in my opinion. I'd buy it. Bottom line, it's unjust and he should be brought back.

I think Kent did some more than awesome covers but he never put out any of his own music so i dont know that he would actually be able to put out an album? I am by no means bashing Kent but the thing that set people like VH apart from Kent is the fact that VH wrote the music as compared to covering someone elses music with of course the exception of girl you really got me and a few others. kent is a good guitarist and you can see and hear that he's studied eddie van halen very very closely (not an easy guitarist to copy...alot of finger tapping there my friends!). as far as kent having his videos pulled off for whatever reason is complete bullshit. there's a boatload of guitar players virtually posting videos of "covers" but kent deserves to have his posted cos atleast he comes close to playing the actual version. i'm not big on "covers" but he is fucking good!!!!!

Kent was amazing. I think it's disgusting that he played his covers so well that they're considered copyright infringement when there are plenty of other covers out there on YouTube that don't catch any heat.

Just want to say that while KC infringed the copyright, I believe because of his unique camera angle, his videos could be labeled tutorials.Thus, "Fair Use" under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. At least in the USA. Also, If he stuck to using backing tracks, his improvisations and camera angles could possibly be considered "Parody".
Weird Al gets the artists' blessing before doing a song, but the DMCA doesn't require it.

Also, in very few cases can you blame the artists. Anyone who has even partial ownership of the publishing rights can issue a take-down notice. I seriously doubt that EVH or ZZ Top care if his videos are on YT. It's usually the record companies using their gestapo agents in the RIAA that send take-down notices.
Bottom line is if you put up a video, make it a tutorial. Then it' may be considered "Fair Use" for educational purposes.

99.9% of guitarist began playing because they were inspired by other guitarist. Kent obviously loves VanHalen, as do alot of us guitar players. VanHalen did covers, guess what, they got PAID to do it! I bet he knew how to play those covers before he got paid to do it. Metallica, and awesome cover band... also got paid to do it. I was playing VH back in the day and was working out alot of the songs Carlevi did on YouTube I found him to be dead on and watching his videos I was able to catch the parts I was missing,,,, I was really bummed when they took him down, It's funny because all the songs he does I was working on back in 96. I miss Kent Carlevi's videos, though they were often watched with envy. For awhile I thought it was Eddie in character!
I cannot figure out why his videos got pulled, unless it had something to do with his backing tracks. If it was because of his covers, that is total BS. They never claimed that those covers were theirs songs, it was explicitly stated that those are/were covers like millions of others! Thumb up for your initiative! Now they are running ads before the videos, next to the videos, during the videos, etc, and anytime you inject alot of money into something it's a game changer. I am actually an attorney in the U.S. and I have represented a commercial musician in certain matters via which I gained familiarity with certain music industry practices.
One fact that many people do not know is that the songwriter (not the performer) actually owns the music under U.S. Copyright laws. So, unless the performer is also the person who wrote and copyrighted the song the performer does not control the rights to it.

Furthermore, as part of most recording contracts, some degree of the rights to the tracks that appear on any releases resulting from the contract become the property of the music label. So, even if the artist does not object to use by third parties, the label that partly owns the song may object and may forward a takedown notice to YouTube.

Kent must be brought back. He's one of the best players I've ever seen. Style, grace, skill, chops, taste. He's got it. I think it's silly that he was nail with copyright bullshit over covers that were stated as such. Even each artist in his covers were given due recognition for their work. I think Kent did some more than awesome covers but he never put out any of his own music so i dont know that he would actually be able to put out an album? I am by no means bashing Kent but the thing that set people like VH apart from Kent is the fact that VH wrote the music as compared to covering someone elses music with of course the exception of girl you really got me and a few others. I dont understand how they could have taken his music down unless he was making money off of his covers.

kent is a good guitarist and you can see and hear that he's studied eddie van halen very very closely (not an easy guitarist to copy...alot of finger tapping there my friends!). as far as kent having his videos pulled off for whatever reason is complete bullshit. there's a boatload of guitar players virtually posting videos of "covers" but kent deserves to have his posted cos atleast he comes close to playing the actual version. i'm not big on "covers" but he is fucking good!!!!!

I agree, bring back KENT..lucky for me, I have a bunch of his vids saved. I have also spoke with Kent via e-mail, seems like a great guy, and a talented musician.
I kinda wonder if these "big" names don't feel somewhat threatened by Kents playing, and the fact that he Inspires, even us 60+ yr. old guitar players to improve. Maybe there's a bit of jealousy on their part, who knows.
Anyway, imho, Kent has become a person that young and old alike look to for some old fashioned guitar playing.

I don't understand why there can be any copyright issue since these are covers. Kent isn't even playing along to the tracks -- he makes his own drum and bass tracks for most of these if I am not mistaken.
Kent is an inspiration to many of us wanting to learn some of these songs.

Infringed copyright laws - this whole site infringes copyright laws everyday - why pick on a guy (Kent) who was an incredible guitarist. Seems like the copyright enforcement is very selective - any lawyers out there - grounds for a class action law suit?

kent is who got me into playing, and the first song i sort of learnt was money for nothing, purely for just seeing his video on here, and now i play all the time, im a massive status quo fan, and have learnt most of there songs on guiytar, but he was who looked to on for inspiration, was amazing, ben your spot on for what you said, we want him back, youtube and courts, your faggots, plenty of others on here do what he did, your just jealous...

Kent's videos were under 'Fair Use' exceptions! It's such corporate bullshit, why don't they remove shit uploaded like all the rap and hip hop on here, leave the man alone. When i first saw his rough boy cover i was just in shock at how awesome the tune was i loved it. One of the absolute most amazing guitarists i've ever heard or seen play. Bring back Kent!!!.

im a big fan of kentcarlevi,but what you have to remember is he only plays covers so he cant be compared to van halen.what i like most abot kent is he nails eddies tone also zak wylde tone on his no more tears cover.kent is a very good guitarist,is he as good as evh,absolutly no chance
