@MrPriiima It's only 2 Jas 39 gripen that have been destroyed by crashing... This was the very first flight with JAS, look how many for example F18, how many f18 do you think have crashed?
Yes that pilot was both extremely unlucky to pilot at both major public catastrophes and still lucky to survive both incidents. Actually this first crash is unbelievable and painful to watch. This was the pride of the nation going down twice. It was not his fault but the balancing system not well proven in interaction with a pilot.
This plane was one of the first fighterjets in the world to use a very advanced fly-by-wire system. This was only the sixth flight of this plane and the reason for the crash was that the pilot and the control system got unsynced: "pilot induced oscillation" (PIO). This was later fixed.. Sources: P3 Dokumentär om JAS 39 Gripen (In Swedish) and Wikipedia.
Jeez, looked like he lost it and panicked just before his touchdown, looks so violent, almost looks like no one could live through that, mind you it could've been much worse....
Er, what you could add to this video-description is that they were testing a new system on the aircraft? A system which, obviously, failed. + Coolest looking fighter jet EVER.
I'm sure it would have been, but the incidents involving the Gripen have only resulted in minor injuries. Unlike the Rafale, two accidents and two dead pilots.
"rafale is the only eurocanard that has suffered no crash during it's developpement"
And also the only one that hasn't won a single export order is it not?
@ferdinand7004 Thank you for not using the term "aerodynamically unstable" as aerodynamics have nothing to do with modern fighter instability, but rather weight distribution or "COG" as you stated.
The Gripen is an extremely advanced aerodynamically unstable aircraft.
If you look at the size of the canards and the hybrid delta-arrow shape of the wing you understand that it is more radical than Rafale and Typhoon in this aspect.
And take a look at what has been accomplished with the Gripen. It beats anything it is set against in international BVR constests. It has the lowest operating costs. It has the best inherent tactics. It belongs to the very best dogfighting class. Suck on it Norge

If memory serves me this was one of the first flights and there was software problems. I was not pilot error. The F-22 had a similar problem when they lit the burner at very low altitude. It oscillated and hit the ground, too. Both planes are freakin awesome
@Perino7869 technically it's called "pilot induced oscillation", and it's something most modern fighters like the f16 and f22 struggle with, even the space shuttle has the same problem.
@Perino7869 Pilot induced oscillations have claimed many an aircraft. One of the best examples of a PIO is the SAGE BURNER phantom at low altitude. Look up SAGE BURNER and you will see the complete destruction of an aircraft at low altitude and VERY high speed, all due to PIO. It is a horrific crash with no survivors.
@Perino7869 Actually, it had nothing to do with lighting the burner. The problem with the F-22 and its well publicized crash was due to the elevator input buffer overreacting to the pilots input. Instead of dampening out the pilots tendency to correct for minor pitch adjustments, the pitch computer should have "averaged" out these inputs. The result was the great video of the elevators making huge corrections just prior to smashing into the runway at Edwards. Software...........
What...eject? If the pilot had ejected he had been blamed for crash of the expensive plane...I had not want to be that pilot...
In the old days at least in Sweden during the 1950-70, pilots did follow their plane down despite they had a ejection seat....as a pilot you dont want to crash the plane....and remember the manufacture of the plane will always blame the pilot..."its nothing wrong with our plane"....ok maybe not in this example....but...
@EvolutionVIII I was 6.5 yrs old at that time and you know what i am from Pakistan and i still remember that day 20 yrs ago when i watched this crash in news when i was sitting next to my father

Hahaha...stupid sweddies, why make planes when you don't have knowledge for it, hehe, you just make monkies out of yourself, and shame out your country
LOL bRazil, country of tranvestites and gay anusmunchers. You can't really do anything else than sodomize yourself. On the other hand Sweden has had very successfull military materail building for the last 100 years. During WW2 the fighting countries had our cannons (yes, both the axis and the allies, we got rich on it, unlike u who only recently became to stabilize)
Finnish hornets are impressive. They would be more impressive if they could drop bombs and attack ground targets like the rest of them..... and Gripen.
Right, the decision was made in 2005. It's going to take plenty of time, though. My point is that the F-18 is beginning to get a little outdated. When it is limited from the outset by political considerations like the definition of "attack", this sets you back even further. The Gripen is better simply because it's newer. I can't understand this nationalist rivalry stuff.
finland doesn't have the population necassary to sustain the costs of a large military development program. that is why. but would ay rather have them buying cheap russian throw away hardware?
JAS 39 Gripen is the best fighter aircraft in the world right now.
Ask the american airforce what they think, they did some joint training missions against JAS, and they could not shoot down a single JAS, while JAS shot down numerous american planes. (excersice so noone was actually shot down ofc)
Same thing with this new swedish submarine that trained with american navy. they could not detect it, much less sink it, in the excercise with it.
Pilot induced oscillation - pilot error. He walked away with a twisted ankle (pardon the pun). It was the same guy who banged out of another Gripen at the Stockhold water festival. This vid was prototype flight testing at Linkoping. I worked there with SAAB for a while on flight trials with Gripen. JAS-39 is an awesome aircraft though...
Jas 39 Gripen is the best manoeuvre plane in the world. Still the jsf is mcuh better to shoot down many ground targets....Jas 39 gripen is small for resons, the costs and for good manoeuvre and speed but also so it can land on normal roads and fuel, sweden use fuel station for jas in diffrientd places in whole sweden it can just land and fuel and get more weapons in some mins, so it is good in that way.
They're fucking great fighters, if they just would not crash all the time. Sorry Swede's. This Finnish dude is just angry because of our last hockey...
No wait a second. We beated you. But still, you're making a fucking great military equipments in Sweden.
Greetings from Finland till alla bröder och människor i Sverige. Tack och hejssan!
becouse jsf is much heavier and gripen has "nosewings" (i dont know if that´s the english word for it) wich gives gripen the potential to make a faster turn.
but okey I don´t KNOW if gripen is better in a air to air fight but it is my theory.
missiles, yes, jas can carry more missiles than jsf, but it can't carry any more than that. it's to little and to small! don't try to be sarkastic to me !!!!!. jsf is much better then jas gripen, sweden is so desperat, that they cuts their prices on jas. because no one else want to by jas.!.
gripen can carry 6000kg jsf 6800, but gripen is much better suited for norway. no one wants to buy it? really, what about the Czech Republic, Hungary, South Africa, Thailand, and the other seven countries that are currently considering it?
why are they soo desperate then??? Because Norway is the only one who want's to pay real prices for them. Jas is a good fighter , but jsf is much better! the old f-16 is american, norway has helped with technology to jsf, soo the plane f-35 is more norwegian than jas is.(if you understand, my english is a bit rusty:D)
Sorry I was wrong. Lenght: Gripen & Gripen NG 14.1 m. Wing span: Gripen & Gripen NG 8.4 m. Number of stations: Gripen 8, Gripen NG 10. Empty weight: Gripen 6800 kg Gripen NG 7000 kg. Internal fuel: Gripen (not public), Gripen NG +40%. Engine thrust: Gripen 18000 Lbs, Gripen NG >22000 Lbs. Max take of weight: Gripen 14000 kg Gripen NG 16000 kg. Payload: Gripen 5000 kg, Gripen NG 6000 kg.
it was some thing about the newly developed electrical steering being to sensitive and some kind of delay between the pilots action and the planes movement making the plane crash.
Same pilot in both prototype crashes, yes. But he had no chance of saving the aircraft in any of those occasions, so he's not to blame. Software failure.
And now, lots of years later, it is easily one of the best fighters in the world

Whe have very great knowledge of plane-building. For over 50 years we have been building our own planes with great success.

Get a clue.

They would be more impressive if they could drop bombs and attack ground targets like the rest of them..... and Gripen.
admiralnomad 3 years ago
But isn't it a huge waste to lose one Gripen per every ground target?
Nakki80 3 years ago
"if they could drop bombs and attack ground targets like the rest of them"
They are being upgraded.
MokomaSusi 3 years ago
Right, the decision was made in 2005. It's going to take plenty of time, though. My point is that the F-18 is beginning to get a little outdated. When it is limited from the outset by political considerations like the definition of "attack", this sets you back even further. The Gripen is better simply because it's newer. I can't understand this nationalist rivalry stuff.
admiralnomad 3 years ago
"My point is that the F-18 is beginning to get a little outdated"
True, but it's not that much outdated.
"The Gripen is better simply because it's newer."
This true also. But there is some better things in F-18 like it can carry more missiles etc.
It's not about rivalry. Gripen did not do well when it was tested... FAF pilots wanted Mirage but it was too expensive at that time.
MokomaSusi 3 years ago
You dont even build your own planes, loooser.
kyrkbymannen 3 years ago
most parts on the gripen are from america so dont get too cocky. dont diss finland
doubledeckertaco 3 years ago
Actually, the only part that is pure americana is the missiles weapons.
wafflor 3 years ago
You are totally wrong, just typical a man who comment in frustration, instead of getting fact first.
The only american part is weaponry.
Come back with facts, and when finland has their own designed airplane.
kyrkbymannen 3 years ago
ALL parts of Finland's fighters are American.
admiralnomad 3 years ago
finland doesn't have the population necassary to sustain the costs of a large military development program. that is why. but would ay rather have them buying cheap russian throw away hardware?

JAS 39 Gripen is the best fighter aircraft in the world right now.
Ask the american airforce what they think, they did some joint training missions against JAS, and they could not shoot down a single JAS, while JAS shot down numerous american planes. (excersice so noone was actually shot down ofc)
Same thing with this new swedish submarine that trained with american navy. they could not detect it, much less sink it, in the excercise with it.
Dont mess with swedish weapon systems imo!
mada09 3 years ago
"JAS 39 Gripen is the best fighter aircraft in the world right now."
You never heard of F-22 or Eurofighter?
"JAS shot down numerous american planes."
You have source? what planes they were flying against? what model?
MokomaSusi 3 years ago
dont compare the eurofighter to a Jas 39. an f-22 sure, but not a eurofighter

JesGreaves 3 years ago 6
theres goes the 70million jas 39. scrap metal.
jijisinsin 3 years ago
Jas 39 Gripen is the best manoeuvre plane in the world. Still the jsf is mcuh better to shoot down many ground targets....Jas 39 gripen is small for resons, the costs and for good manoeuvre and speed but also so it can land on normal roads and fuel, sweden use fuel station for jas in diffrientd places in whole sweden it can just land and fuel and get more weapons in some mins, so it is good in that way.
Ogmarr 3 years ago
Wrong. F-22 has better manoeuvre. But yeah, JAS 39 can land MOSTLY everywhere in Sweden under the condition that the roads are straight.
Eller du kanske är svensk?

They're fucking great fighters, if they just would not crash all the time. Sorry Swede's. This Finnish dude is just angry because of our last hockey...
No wait a second. We beated you. But still, you're making a fucking great military equipments in Sweden.
Greetings from Finland till alla bröder och människor i Sverige. Tack och hejssan!

i think you(kfk1994) don´t know so much. Gripen is now upgraded.
and in a air to air fight jsf wouldn´t have a chance, Gripen is so much more flexible.
you american thinks everything should be big but one day you will realize that it´s better to be fast and flexible.
jagguarja 3 years ago
"and in a air to air fight jsf wouldn´t have a chance"
And how do you know that?
The JSF is still only a prototype, it won't be introduced until 2011.
Besides, Gripen is a 4.5 generation aircraft which has been in service for more then 10 years, the JSF is a 5th generation aircraft.
jimmyn89 3 years ago
becouse jsf is much heavier and gripen has "nosewings" (i dont know if that´s the english word for it) wich gives gripen the potential to make a faster turn.
but okey I don´t KNOW if gripen is better in a air to air fight but it is my theory.
jagguarja 3 years ago
jsf, can't be seen on radar, i think(im not sure) jas can be seen on radars.
kfk1994 3 years ago
missiles, yes, jas can carry more missiles than jsf, but it can't carry any more than that. it's to little and to small! don't try to be sarkastic to me !!!!!. jsf is much better then jas gripen, sweden is so desperat, that they cuts their prices on jas. because no one else want to by jas.!.
kfk1994 3 years ago
gripen can carry 6000kg jsf 6800, but gripen is much better suited for norway. no one wants to buy it? really, what about the Czech Republic, Hungary, South Africa, Thailand, and the other seven countries that are currently considering it?
skitnerdig 3 years ago
why are they soo desperate then??? Because Norway is the only one who want's to pay real prices for them. Jas is a good fighter , but jsf is much better! the old f-16 is american, norway has helped with technology to jsf, soo the plane f-35 is more norwegian than jas is.(if you understand, my english is a bit rusty:D)
kfk1994 3 years ago
jsf is a better fighter then gripen C/D but u cant really compare planes that are operative agianst those that are under devolpment
JSF aint a better fighter then Gripen NG
alvedon21 3 years ago
jas gripen is to light to be an fighter, it even almost can't carrie a bomb. i really hope Norway buy the american planes
kfk1994 3 years ago
You are absolutely right!
Gripen can only carry 7 missiles.
Gripen NG can only carry 10 missiles.
So Joint Strike Fighter which can carry 4
missiles is a much better option for Norway.
NicsoftInc 3 years ago 6
NicsoftInc 3 years ago
Really LOL! Gripen cant only carry 7 missiles. It can carry up to 1,5 ton bombs
wafflor 3 years ago
im guessing that there was a problem
oceantv 3 years ago
What a noob pilot... or have problem?
ecslipe 3 years ago
it was some thing about the newly developed electrical steering being to sensitive and some kind of delay between the pilots action and the planes movement making the plane crash.
Wiquzor 3 years ago
Same pilot in both prototype crashes, yes. But he had no chance of saving the aircraft in any of those occasions, so he's not to blame. Software failure.
Orupsuger 4 years ago
I think the same pilot crashed another plane aswell. Perhaps the wrong line of work...
