Actually, what grates on my ears is NOT his guitar tone, considering he's using a video camera mic, what would one expect? The guys does a great job demoing stuff.
WHAT KILLS MY EARS is that New England/Long Island accent where he ends words ending in "A" with an "R": "Bob Bradshawrr"
@TheFlyers09 I just got one off ebay, and I plan on using it with my 3 Channel 2010 Mesa Dual Rectifier, pushing the clean channel, and the two overdrive channels at varying levels of gain.
If you don't think this style pedal should be used with dirty amps, look up Paul Gilbert's video demo of his "Fuzz Universe" pedal. He pushes a dirty Marshall Vintage Modern with 2 levels of OD Gain.
The sound of the JCM800 on the lead channel is not great. (I think it's how the amp is setup) But once he fiddles with the pedal a bit it sounds better.
The sound of the JCM800 on the lead channel is not great.9 I think it's how the amp is setup) But once he fiddles with the pedal a bit it sounds better.
wait i still dont understand why is it you cant use the boost to get more bite out of the over drive just because of their positions, can you explain please?
man!! that tone coming from the amp really sux, your voice sound good though, that let me to believe you have a really crappy mic or no mic at all in front of that amp. this doesn't do the pedals justice
Hey TK! Would you recommend getting this or some other overdrive pedal (eg TS9 or Maxon OOD-9) to give that extra punch and gain to my 6505+ 112 combo at apartment noise levels or should I get a THD Hotplate instead? I just want to drive the power tubes a bit more. Any suggestions?
You are also useing it the wrong way idiot. Yes in an amps gain channel the boost will not give much of a boost but more gain. The proper way to use a boost is in the amps loop. That is so it bypasses the preamp and gives a natural boost. I have this pedal and the boost section works great this way.
If I wouldn't know the general good quality of MXR and Custom Audio Electronics items I think I'd directly consider that pedal as shit after watching this demo. It sounds absolutely bad. This is no promotion of a product, this is destruction.
Please don't be upset because I don't want to insult you. I've no idea of what was wrong but make better recordings. Why didn't you demo with a clearer clean (fenderish ?) tone too ? I'm sorry if my English isn't that good.
@lmsjr This guy amazes me... it takes talent to make a 2205 sound this horrible... Maybe turn down some of the reverb and eq the amp so it doesn't sound like the Presence is on 0.
1-what kind of camera do ya have? i love the audio and picture quality!
2-do you know if eminence legend speakers are good? im thinking of getting a vader 4x12 and vader uses legends. this thing is a steal.. 750 dollars for a 4x12. i heard the legends are good but i wanna check with you because you know what your talking about :)
I use a canon HD cam. Legend V12s are killer. $750 however sounds like a lot of dough for a 4x12. Those legends cost about $50 each, and a cab at mojotone or somewhere else should only run about 300-ish. Hope that helps.
TTK, I just watch your other vid with the Behringer Vintage Tube monster. In my opinion. the cheap Behringer has a fatter and better tone that this MXR. To me both are OD pedals, but the tube monster sounder with more bite and rounder.
@nickfleischer Thats what I use mine for, i use it as "mod" if u will for my mg100 to sound more like a classic Marshall 1960's tube amp and i use the boost for solos, does make it sound more natural but not much louder.
Because they have very special characteristics and most people don't have them. A rig with active pickups will sound totally different than the same rig with passives.
yeah i second that (tanax13) , i mean i know that emg 81 85 have a little growl even in clean playin but that only enforces my need to hear what the emg actives can do in differernt styles or setups, as i wrote in a previous message, i wanna see that emg are not just a one track pony for metal and rock
@kaleluk31, dude active pickups in general are for metal and sometimes rock. They aren't made to be versatile, and they aren't. They do one job and they do it incredibly well. If you want something less sterile go the Seymour Duncan blackouts. From experience, they are much better actives, more organic. But to be honest you don't buy actives for diversity.
That's what he used live as a solo artist for some time, yes. However, many will agree that his studio tone is much better than his live tone. He used amp distortion exclusively on his Cornfords during the time when he wrote pretty much every song everyone loves by Satriani.
I do agree on the boost. It should have been first. I personnaly like to use a boost in front of different overdrives or just the amp, or even an envelope filter. Thanks for the great review as always
Thanks for the review... I am looking for a new boost pedal and I was thinking about getting this but seeing that the boost does not boost the overdrive I do not want it. I do not understand why they would make an overdrive with a boost that can not be boosted by the same pedal.
I noticed you didn't play with both effects active =(
Anyway, the clean boost was designed for a rhythm to solo volume boost without adding gain or to help make up for loss of volume in long pedal chains. On an amp with less headroom, the boost will push the amp into overdrive sooner. You can then cascade the overdrives of the amp and pedal for more fun \m/
I plan on getting all the CAE/MXR pedals (boost, boost/OD, & wah/boost) soon to try on my own rig.
Your "Baseline" tone is crap

Because they have very special characteristics and most people don't have them. A rig with active pickups will sound totally different than the same rig with passives.
ibzbucket 2 years ago 3
Using Passive pick ups helps give a better idea of what the amp/pedal sounds like as active ones tend to colour the tone a little
Jackouss 2 years ago 3
because it makes the distortion more fierce than it would be normally.

good reviwe over drives are not my thing they dont seem to do much and ever amp allready has one
stinkfoot777 2 years ago
Why aren't overdrives your thing? Boosting an overdriven amp sounds way better than a thin high gain pedal on the clean channel.
ibzbucket 2 years ago 4
Right... but Joe Satriani uses distortion on the clean channel and he sounds 10 billion times better than you will sound in 500 lifetimes.-

The sound wasn't too good on this vid today TK.
Any chance for the rest, to mic your speaker box up like on other reviews/shootouts, and leave it set up for the rest of the 3 weeks?
It was sounding very WOOFY in parts.
It would come across a lot better after YT video/audio compression.
I watch it in HQ but still sometimes the sound isnt great and those camera mics arent really designed for rec live audio.
Cheers & keep it up. Enjoying it ALL so far!
