  • what kind of red is that? it doesnt seem like the normal red red.

  • Very useful.nice eye

  • that was good. one of the better tutorial vids.

  • hot an heavy!

  • were you in a movie called Catfish?

  • THANK YOU PROCEED WITH LITTLE INFORMATION.

  • Great video, can you give the name of the shades for the 4 colors you used specifically, i would like to try your method. I have serveral reds, blues, brown not sure which one you used. Thanks.

  • This was very helpful, i just got my first set of pastels and this video helped alot i will never use flesh color pastel

  • Very helpful ,the best yet thank you and please keep them coming

  • I signed up for you tube just so I could subscribe to your site. I find your videos very helpful. One question/s.. Do you ever feel you could keep adding touches forever? Do you, reach a certain point when you know it is finished? Have you ever thought, doh! I should have left it alone!.? I feel like I stop on my work to soon, like I am afraid I am going to mess up what I have so far...

Thanks again for your amazing videos.

  • Many thanks! The best tutorial I have seen on you tube so far. Simple and to the point!

  • I'm drawing lee dewyze and I have a flesh colored pastel but it's not his color. Thanks so much for making this video. Your very talented :)

  • oh that was very helpful ty

  • thank you, this was very helpful

  • hi im doing an art project and i was wandering if the colours you used will work for drawing ''the girl with a pearl earing'' but the stick pastels will work fine ryt? instead of using pencils

  • tanks

  • Clear, reassuring advice. Cracking stuff!

  • Nice! The "Flesh" color in most sets -- pastels, colored pencils, paint -- is usually a highlight color, a light orange. It's a good highlight but not much of anything else.

  • i agree donthebeau. Further more its kinda annoying when you see people on youtube trying to sound like a pro when there clearly making amateur mistakes.

  • @mrcitydocs

she just said it is just a genertic of the face because she want to see the tones.

  • @donthebeau the person was trying to show skin tone not how to make a human face

  • chalk pastel right? doesn't sound like oil.

  • thanks good vid

  • May I suggest that you draw

    Shanedawsontv

    :)

  • awesome tutorial.

  • your voice is very similiar as ellen´s page voice.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this with us, lots of good info.

  • OH your a woman :P

for some reason i thought you were a guy XD

    legend.

  • well ive never tried the pencile oil pastel but i would recommeded well doing some one with lighter skin use either yellow orr orange instead of red

  • Thank you for this great informative video. Just what I needed. I'm inspired. =)

  • thank you so much, very helpful tutorial.

  • do all pastel pencils come in chalk or soft pastel?

  • I actually am not entirely sure on all the specific pastel pencil options out there. The art store by me had only one choice and they were Derwent pastel pencils which seemed to do the trick fine.

  • yes i also accuire dervent pencil thanks for the video

  • @sweetz1491 No, you can buy harder pastel sticks as well. Soft pastels break down faster but are easier to blend into the surface like when you want to blend the colors variations.

  • this is very good, i wanted to start useing pastels in my art, and im only 13, where would u recomend i get some actualy art supplies from, and do you use pastel sticks or pastel pencils, either or where do you perchuse your supplies?

  • Michael's has most of them

  • I'm with justinclev - I actually got all of my art supplies from Michael's ... there's also dickblick I would imagine... I use rembrandt soft pastel sticks(they are pricey, but worth every penny)... and Derwent pastel pencils (they were the only choice but work fine). Hope this helps!

  • Very helpful video! I am primarily a pastel artist and have had terrible results with the so-called flesh colored pastel pencils. I am going to use your method from now on. Thank you so much for posting!

  • .. I'm a really bad artist... so I'd really like to know how to draw a decent side and front profile of a face... even just some sketching assistance would help... I'm so clueless. XD

  • loved the tut but i have a question, what if you have an extremely light skinned person like Christina aguilera(w/o tan) for instance what colors would you and could you use for a tone such as that?

  • I use the same colors - but very lightly and mix them more with white. This is definitely another case where you have to build the tone slowly so you don't get caught with so much white that you can't recover.

I might still use a little "artistic license" so to speak to create interest in a piece as needed -- for example, if the picture was a bit washed out, then I'll take some liberties in adding a bit more color to portions of it to create a bit more contrast and interest. Did this help?

  • oic thanks a bunch, i always had a trouble with that because i either add to much yellow or to much brown and it'll throw off my primacolor pencil color scale out of proportion, thanks for replying and for the info.

  • at about 1:45 when you say that, it's actually very true if you look at a paper's edge under a magnifying glass, it's like a mountain range and that's what holds the graphite in

  • Yeah exactly jinzodude... I almost screwed myself up in the next portrait I'm going to upload because I laid down some undertones a little too heavy. I have to continually remind myself not to jump the gun and to build slowly.

  • That helped me out a lot.

I can never figure out how to get the skin tone. I can shade w/ pencil black and white drawing but never get the shade of color right.

    Thanks again

  • Cool cool... Also I didn't get into further along detail in this video, but I will throw in a bit of yellow and green depending on the specific picture I am working from. It really just depends on what I can pull out from the portrait I'm doing. I am so glad this helped you out - thanks for the nice feedback :)

  • Wow Im soooooo happy that A. I get to hear pro tips on sketching and drawing AND I get to attach a voice to one of my favorite youtubers :D *Huuuug*

And thank you for the tips too!

(Last thing: which shade of brown did you use or was it just any old brown?)

  • You are awesome sauce (and hope you are equally happy with your pic that I'm going to upload in a bit here). As for the shade of brown.. hmm... my pastel pencil set doesn't attach names to the shades, but I will call it just a standard dark brown. I worry more about specific shades as I get a little further into the picture, as long as I have the right general "flavor" of color as a base (so to speak) to map from then that seems to work well enough for me so far. Hope that helped.

  • i agree i just love your drawing so much i usually never watch "how to" because there boring but your drawings are so good i had to watch the whole thing

  • smecks is a girl?!?!?!? awesome voice!

  • Yes, it is true.

    Signed Omar

  • Last time I checked, indeed I am a girl! :) I'm glad my voice didn't grate on your nerves too much, and apologies for the rambling I know I did.

  • you have a sweet voice ;)

  • WOW that helped me out quite a bit :D .. That was just what I was hoping to see to learn how to use pastels better. All this time I've been using the sticks/ chalk pastel to do entire potraits and whatever it is I had to draw lol. Now I know pencils are the way to go hehe. But would you recomend using the sticks for like big art works such as scenary and stuff like that? Or do u jus stick to the pencils all the way? But anyway thanks for the vid i realy enjoyed it, and learned from it :]

  • Oh cool, i'm glad that helped you!

The sticks definitely have their place and i do use them much more frequently when i get a little further into the portrait. I like the pencils because they allow me to start off more gently for the facial form and tones. That last freestyle sketch i did I think I pretty much entirely used the sticks- and barely the pencils. It really is just what feels right for you and the piece you are working on at the time. :)

  • :O upload the last sketch plz :D lol i love watching ur work ^-^

  • Amazing! :D

  • Tutorial! Love it :)

  • Sweeeeet - thanks for taking a gander!

  • I thought the video was very interesting. How you built on the colors to generate a shifting skin tone was interesting. I'm terrible at hand art but it actually helped me quite a bit with computer art and some of the color blending I do with my Wacom tablet! Thanks for that!

    -Max

  • I'm terrible at computer art! I stopped by your channel to see if you had any art vids up but didn't see any. Are you planning to put some up? Thanks for the nice comment, btw - I appreciate it!

  • Unfortunately probably not. 99% of what I create now is owned by someone before I even start on it. It's the job so I don't do it for fun much anymore.

  • mikma was here

  • I ♥ Mikma

  • YAY! Tutorial!!!!! You rock Mary!

    Thank you sensei :P i'm learning...i'm learning...

  • I just finished watching the video and it helped me BUNCHES! I'm going to watch this video through again...and maybe even a couple more times tomorrow :) I noticed you draw with your hand above the paper which I really need to do. :P

Oh and I noticed that you smear things with your fingers like how I like to do. Can't get anywehre without getting down and dirty eh? Except I'm having to wash my fingers every few minutes so I don't mix colors where I don't want them to mix. Comment too long.

  • Young Grasshopper :)

And as far as getting dirty - my hand is the least of my worries... somehow I get pastels on my face, look like i have a tan line around my knees... it just ain't purdy.

I am glad this helped you. I am not the fastest of drawers, so it was challenging to get it under 10 mins. Let me know what else you want and I'll try to put more together. If nothing else at least this kinda sorta gave you the general idea. :)

  • Very nice Mary, you're awesome.

  • Thank you my friend, I am glad you liked it. I will try to make the tutorials a little more refined in the future (if I continue to do them).

  • loves it ^_^

  • Hey it's nice to see you here again!

  • btw who's pic is that?
