My first trip to D.C. was a little over 2 years ago. Commercial traffic in and out of Reagan airport is o.k. You'll also see military blackhawk helicopters circling around, 24 hours a day. It felt safe when I was there, and I don't think that's changed.

Several flew over during the concert. DCA (Reagan National) is right outside of DC.
