If G. bush can get elected as president of USA two times in two successive terms, why election of Modi as CM of Gujarat should surprise Anyone. Both were and are regarded by their electorate as savior from Islamic terrorism. Their mishandling of minorities in their state is at comparable level. Both used media to falsely paint inherent wealth of their state as the achievement of nothing else but their rule and majority population of their state bought it.

Mr. french has done his research and while the two Indians make personal attacks on each other, he raises very strong points and perhaps is the only debater here to have exhibited a correct understanding of the topic. As an Indian middle class man I an vouch for his every factual statement as we continue to be ruled by incompetent people not even qualified to hold the most menial of jobs.

@rockyqw12 - I agree that research by Mr french is much more than one would expect a non-Indian journalist to know and raises serious points that would be decisive for victory in other debates. However,as I understand, topic of this debate is whether Indian democracy is a weakness of republic of India that can potentially threaten its existence. And I think in absence of democracy India would have got splintered into various little segments along lines of Religion, language, caste and ethnicity.

@rockyqw12- The unity that we assume today in Indians was absent when we were on the verge of getting political freedom from British. Only democracy could guarantee development of unity. Democracy is best option to dilute sub-nationalism that has potential to divide the country. We get corrupt and incompetent people elected because we as a society are corrupt.

@rockyqw12 - We are ready to give small bribes every now and then for ease of life but only cry loud when we don't get work done after giving bribe or when we cant afford to give that bribe. Some people among us give large sum of bribe to get something that they don't deserve.

I have seen almost every IT company employee including managers submitting forged medical bills of 15k to save tax of 5k per year.
