if you compare the older styles of wing chun to the modern ones they have almost nothing to do with eachother. for example chi sim or red boat wing chun with the ewto or 'blitzdefense' ....
I agree. Martial art is a process of development and decay. Dr. Leung Jan is thought to have developed Wing Chun into a science, beyond the Red Junk version. IMO, it decayed again after that. Uncle Yip learned a decayed version first, then a refined version from Leung Bik. When he taught in Hong Kong he taught WC in various ways, depending on his students and on his personal whims.
Yip Man charged Dr. Ting with making it scientific again, based on centerline theory, a syllabi, and terminology.
cont.. There are many versions today. Many versions have gone back to mainland China looking for more pure versions, but what for? We have the theory of Wing Chun ourselves, why do we need to trust back to someone else's opinion of it.
Sifu Nam for example gave all the moves fancy names, such as"Double Dragons playing with pearls" or "Golden Scissors", even though we are taught WC uses direct simple names like "piercing arms" or ""splitting arms". But Sifu Nam did Hung Gar before Wen Chen....
cont 2...What is it that would make WC different then Karate or Muay Thai? It is Centerline Theory and the principles of applying Chi Sau reflexes into real fighting. It is also the "soft" training to prevent long term chronic injury and the use of the adduction stance. IMHO, Yip Man was sad that other CMA were leaking into WC and that his own neglect of many of his students training had resulted in what we call "Karate" WC today. In Leung Ting he hoped to put it back on the path to the center.
I will have to look chu shong tin sifu up. Sifu Wong Shun Leung was Uncle Yip's first student/ teacher in Hong Kong, and one would expect him to have gotten the very worst version of Yip Man Wing Chun as Uncle Yip was very reluctant to teach "real" Wing Chun publicly. Not saying it is worthless as Yip Man still wanted successful fighters, but that it would be the watered down version with much held back. example: No inner rotation kwan sau movement in the first segment of the first form.
i must disagree with what you've said. nobody trains in a way that they believe will get them beat up. everybody does their best. furthermore wing tsun is a derivitive style. you should show respect for the senior students of yip man and his contemporaries and not dismiss what they were taught and their lifetime's experiences as worthless when compared to what Leung TIng teaches. chinese martial culture is respectful of the contributions of past generations for it would be nothing without them.

There are several Worthless versions under the banner WC, and I fret at being compared to them. There are also many good teachers and good fighters under the banner Wing Chun as well.

I have had over 80 seminar days with Si-Fu Emin, several with Dr. Leung Ting, and 3 with Keith Kernspeckt, plus many other workshops with Micheal Casey and others. I have also about 5 feet of MA books.
Locally I have had only working group leaders and since around 1996 I have run my own location, so you could say I am my own teacher. This is why I relie on scientific fact more then familial piety as to me it is about transferring information, not whether some other guy is really good at it.
Sifu Chu Shong Tin I dont know but his student Sifu Fong I am familiar with. I do agree that it is all in the SNT and CK forms perfection. Watching Fongs students I see them "guessing" by reaching out with a block and a strike instead of attacks which become blocks on contact, and they also push down or out with defenses and not forward.
Also they define the centerline by the axis becoming a PLANE connecting to enemy. A line is not a plane in scientific geometry.
It's my understanding that Bruce gave up on WC because he was frustrated with his inability to beat his seniors, he didn't continue to train with other WC practitioners in the US, and he angered Ip Man by trying to bribe him - Not because he wanted to go beyond the system's "limitations." That's just what Linda Caldwell wants to sell you. You should know that wc is not a ring sport but If you want to see it winning fights look up Alan Orr from the UK. Boztepe was a bouncer not a sport fighter.

It means oldest Si-Fu, since he didn't really create the art like a Si-jo or si-gong. Dr. Ting was the Si-Jo before we split from his organization and I think some new students do call Si-fu Emin Si-Jo of EBMAS, "Dai" is a term of respect.

IMHO, most WC boycotted Leung Ting and his WT and changed their versions of the chun to be as far away from WT as they could. This included front stances, hard style conditioning, rejection of the Nun, and even going to the mainland to find alternatrives such as Si-fu Nam. While all of this may still be Wing Chun, so is any old fools version made up from reading Inside Kung Fu magazine. But is it still Yip Man Wing Chun? Does their SNT look like his in the old films? What is it that makes WC?

The Internet is wonderful World. Show me the proof of any real fight were WC was used and Um won. The beauty of Sparring in Boxing for instance, there is the reality of getting HIT and ones reaction to it. You can practice all you want, and look AWESOME on youtube, but if you do not spar, you never really know. Ring fighting is a Sport, but it is one way you can prove your style has a chance on the streets...There is a reason why Bruce Lee, branched out. WC is a great style, with LIMITATIONS.
I suggest you investigate the risk of brain damage before you advocate to volunteer for head trauma in every class. The point of a Martial Art is to NOT be damaged and to NOT be injured when the time comes to fight.
I fully agree that learning to take a punch is important for sport fighters. However, the rest of us do not want the long term chronic health impacts that come with this. I personally have rib injuries that will never heal, and ear and spine pain when it is cold, from sparring.
This is a good point. One should be in good health and wear protective gear when sparring. Not all sparing is all out, there is sparing were you can go 70% 60%...Distance, timing, feeling, etc...I just do not like theories when it comes to fighting.

Anyone who claims he is unbeatable and has an open challenge to fight "anytime, anywhere" can not be "bum rushed." Once you issue that challenge, and especially if you claim no one will except it because they are afraid, a person must accept violence that confronts him, fair or not.

I'm not claiming to be some fighting god like Boztepe thinks he is, or claiming I challenged the Gracies, which he did, and then backed out of... I take BJJ. Is it perfect? No. Is it better than _ing _un? Hell yes. I would be willing to spar any _ing _un student with the same amount of training time as me, and I know I would come out the winner. _ing _un is not a good delivery system for fighting, and that fact is pretty well known.
Check your facts. hOrion was the LAST person to refuse a venue in that challange issue. It boiled down to the Gracies wanting to control the profits from the sale of the video after the event.
And in Emin's fight against some other _ing _un 'master' how come the fight looks nothing like _ing _un? If I train for at least 5 years in an art, but when I fight, it looks nothing like it, then there is a problem. When you look at MMA fighters, they fight well, and fight like they train. You can see boxing technique, muay thai clinches,good wrestling/judo takedowns, and BJJ/Sambo/Submission wrestling techniques on the ground.
The fallacy in your arguement is that training must look like fighting. _ing _un chi sau and other drills are created to bring out reactions to pressure, recruit muscles and develope stabilization. You will not see these drills in a fight. We kick box the same as everyone else. I will agree that alot of _ing __un don't spar or fight train, and do only the drills. But you will not see Chi Sau in the ring.
So one could ask, how advanced is a boxing sport if they only train by sparring? why do they not have any training methods to bring out stabilization or to encourage muscle recruitment patterns? What do they do for sensitivity/reation time training? What is there to learn besides punching, kicking, and clinching then?

Early UFC had a bunch on people that had never sport fought try to fight a family system that pioneered sport fighting. Not the best example.
BJJ and Muay Thai are great arts. What is your system for connecting them together in training. and sparring untill it works is not a system, I will not count on chance side effects in training.
It comes down to Emin backing out... The Gracie's had many stupid people challenging them all the time, so they told him to come to the UFC for a superfight with Royce. He backed out. They then offered to use a police station gym, he backed out. If he really, really wanted to fight them, as the challenger, he should have. He started making excuses.. If you are such a good fighter, why back out of the UFC? There werent alot of rules back then.
He wanted true no rules, no ref, no gloves or cups fight. A Magazine offered to host it at their own studio and then Orion backed out. So when an ACTUAL NEUTRAL location presented itself, the Gracies did not want to fight, they like to control the video, profits, and venue. No big deal really, except when you make it sound like Emin was the one that backe dout.
But he did backout numerous other challenges...in Holland against 4 freefighters who all wanted to fight him one by one off course...he talked his way out of that one! (i know, i was there!) In LA (i wasn't there) he did'nt want to fight Bas Rutten, later Boztepe claimed that Rutten came to his seminar/school with a gun because he was so scared of bozo!!??

Wing Whatever has always had alot of political infighting. the whole "invented by women, use less to beat more" thing has attracted the wrong type of person (non-athletic) in many cases. Now that MMA is so popular, athletic fighters types want the fast road so they can get in the ring quick, so they don't come to WT for training. Thus, we don't have alot of people in sports fighting for you to look at.

Wing Tsun is very complicated and theory based. To be a student of WT you have to listen and follow directions. You have to work WITH your training partner in many of the drills. Competitive sports attracts people that want to beat everyone, they don't seem to like cooperating with their partner.

if you compare the older styles of wing chun to the modern ones they have almost nothing to do with eachother. for example chi sim or red boat wing chun with the ewto or 'blitzdefense' ....

I agree. Martial art is a process of development and decay. Dr. Leung Jan is thought to have developed Wing Chun into a science, beyond the Red Junk version. IMO, it decayed again after that. Uncle Yip learned a decayed version first, then a refined version from Leung Bik. When he taught in Hong Kong he taught WC in various ways, depending on his students and on his personal whims.
Yip Man charged Dr. Ting with making it scientific again, based on centerline theory, a syllabi, and terminology.

cont.. There are many versions today. Many versions have gone back to mainland China looking for more pure versions, but what for? We have the theory of Wing Chun ourselves, why do we need to trust back to someone else's opinion of it.
Sifu Nam for example gave all the moves fancy names, such as"Double Dragons playing with pearls" or "Golden Scissors", even though we are taught WC uses direct simple names like "piercing arms" or ""splitting arms". But Sifu Nam did Hung Gar before Wen Chen....

cont 2...What is it that would make WC different then Karate or Muay Thai? It is Centerline Theory and the principles of applying Chi Sau reflexes into real fighting. It is also the "soft" training to prevent long term chronic injury and the use of the adduction stance. IMHO, Yip Man was sad that other CMA were leaking into WC and that his own neglect of many of his students training had resulted in what we call "Karate" WC today. In Leung Ting he hoped to put it back on the path to the center.

I will have to look chu shong tin sifu up. Sifu Wong Shun Leung was Uncle Yip's first student/ teacher in Hong Kong, and one would expect him to have gotten the very worst version of Yip Man Wing Chun as Uncle Yip was very reluctant to teach "real" Wing Chun publicly. Not saying it is worthless as Yip Man still wanted successful fighters, but that it would be the watered down version with much held back. example: No inner rotation kwan sau movement in the first segment of the first form.

i must disagree with what you've said. nobody trains in a way that they believe will get them beat up. everybody does their best. furthermore wing tsun is a derivitive style. you should show respect for the senior students of yip man and his contemporaries and not dismiss what they were taught and their lifetime's experiences as worthless when compared to what Leung TIng teaches. chinese martial culture is respectful of the contributions of past generations for it would be nothing without them.

This was only in regard as to your statement that we should all spell it "Wing Chun" and not a statement of worth. Dr. Leung Ting has been disrespected for years anyway, by many of these "so called" honorable elders.
There are several Worthless versions under the banner WC, and I fret at being compared to them. There are also many good teachers and good fighters under the banner Wing Chun as well.
This is why we spell it our own way.

I have had over 80 seminar days with Si-Fu Emin, several with Dr. Leung Ting, and 3 with Keith Kernspeckt, plus many other workshops with Micheal Casey and others. I have also about 5 feet of MA books.
Locally I have had only working group leaders and since around 1996 I have run my own location, so you could say I am my own teacher. This is why I relie on scientific fact more then familial piety as to me it is about transferring information, not whether some other guy is really good at it.

Sifu Chu Shong Tin I dont know but his student Sifu Fong I am familiar with. I do agree that it is all in the SNT and CK forms perfection. Watching Fongs students I see them "guessing" by reaching out with a block and a strike instead of attacks which become blocks on contact, and they also push down or out with defenses and not forward.
Also they define the centerline by the axis becoming a PLANE connecting to enemy. A line is not a plane in scientific geometry.
These are clues to bad WC.

It's my understanding that Bruce gave up on WC because he was frustrated with his inability to beat his seniors, he didn't continue to train with other WC practitioners in the US, and he angered Ip Man by trying to bribe him - Not because he wanted to go beyond the system's "limitations." That's just what Linda Caldwell wants to sell you. You should know that wc is not a ring sport but If you want to see it winning fights look up Alan Orr from the UK. Boztepe was a bouncer not a sport fighter.

It means oldest Si-Fu, since he didn't really create the art like a Si-jo or si-gong. Dr. Ting was the Si-Jo before we split from his organization and I think some new students do call Si-fu Emin Si-Jo of EBMAS, "Dai" is a term of respect.
As to "bastardizing" the name, we spell it to be different as we want nothing to do with many of the WC styles, nor to be grouped with them. Only the Chinese Characters are the same, and even in China they have dialects.

Irregardless, EB wants nothing to do with other WC? that's kind of absurd. there's a shared lineage, techniques, training methods, etc. there's so much common ground how could that not happen? does that have more to do with his break with WT than anything else? I imagine that that does not extend to the FMA component.

of course. there is different emphasis on certain methods based on where the style is from. ewto styles like slapping the bridge, pummeling, elbows and spine manipulation, which is different from even other WT styles.
trained with chris chan stylists? we are close to other yip man styles. we regularly go to HK and fatshan. i've touched hands with wan kam leung and the head of the pan nam school.
mainland styles like long range bridge, grappling, pushing and biu jee when it is not necessary.

IMHO, most WC boycotted Leung Ting and his WT and changed their versions of the chun to be as far away from WT as they could. This included front stances, hard style conditioning, rejection of the Nun, and even going to the mainland to find alternatrives such as Si-fu Nam. While all of this may still be Wing Chun, so is any old fools version made up from reading Inside Kung Fu magazine. But is it still Yip Man Wing Chun? Does their SNT look like his in the old films? What is it that makes WC?

The Internet is wonderful World. Show me the proof of any real fight were WC was used and Um won. The beauty of Sparring in Boxing for instance, there is the reality of getting HIT and ones reaction to it. You can practice all you want, and look AWESOME on youtube, but if you do not spar, you never really know. Ring fighting is a Sport, but it is one way you can prove your style has a chance on the streets...There is a reason why Bruce Lee, branched out. WC is a great style, with LIMITATIONS.

I suggest you investigate the risk of brain damage before you advocate to volunteer for head trauma in every class. The point of a Martial Art is to NOT be damaged and to NOT be injured when the time comes to fight.
I fully agree that learning to take a punch is important for sport fighters. However, the rest of us do not want the long term chronic health impacts that come with this. I personally have rib injuries that will never heal, and ear and spine pain when it is cold, from sparring.

Anyone who claims he is unbeatable and has an open challenge to fight "anytime, anywhere" can not be "bum rushed." Once you issue that challenge, and especially if you claim no one will except it because they are afraid, a person must accept violence that confronts him, fair or not.
Further more, if he did turn his back on Emin, after making this open challenge, who's fault is that? He may have tried to stall it to another time, but that is not an option AFTER making an open call and an insult.

This is the same Sifu Boztepe. He attacked no one, but he did except an "open Challange" in 1984.
He is currently about the same age as William was back then, if you can call that "old".

I'm not claiming to be some fighting god like Boztepe thinks he is, or claiming I challenged the Gracies, which he did, and then backed out of... I take BJJ. Is it perfect? No. Is it better than _ing _un? Hell yes. I would be willing to spar any _ing _un student with the same amount of training time as me, and I know I would come out the winner. _ing _un is not a good delivery system for fighting, and that fact is pretty well known.

Check your facts. hOrion was the LAST person to refuse a venue in that challange issue. It boiled down to the Gracies wanting to control the profits from the sale of the video after the event.

And in Emin's fight against some other _ing _un 'master' how come the fight looks nothing like _ing _un? If I train for at least 5 years in an art, but when I fight, it looks nothing like it, then there is a problem. When you look at MMA fighters, they fight well, and fight like they train. You can see boxing technique, muay thai clinches,good wrestling/judo takedowns, and BJJ/Sambo/Submission wrestling techniques on the ground.

The fallacy in your arguement is that training must look like fighting. _ing _un chi sau and other drills are created to bring out reactions to pressure, recruit muscles and develope stabilization. You will not see these drills in a fight. We kick box the same as everyone else. I will agree that alot of _ing __un don't spar or fight train, and do only the drills. But you will not see Chi Sau in the ring.

So one could ask, how advanced is a boxing sport if they only train by sparring? why do they not have any training methods to bring out stabilization or to encourage muscle recruitment patterns? What do they do for sensitivity/reation time training? What is there to learn besides punching, kicking, and clinching then?

I'm wasting my time with you. If you really think your _ing _un is good, then I am happy for you. I think it look slike slap boxing at unrealistic close quarters. I train BJJ and some boxing, hopefully Muay Thai soon if I can afford it. I know it works.
Oh, early UFC was no gloves, no cups, you could pretty much do whatever you wanted. Research it a bit, and good luck chunning in the future.

Early UFC had a bunch on people that had never sport fought try to fight a family system that pioneered sport fighting. Not the best example.
BJJ and Muay Thai are great arts. What is your system for connecting them together in training. and sparring untill it works is not a system, I will not count on chance side effects in training.

It comes down to Emin backing out... The Gracie's had many stupid people challenging them all the time, so they told him to come to the UFC for a superfight with Royce. He backed out. They then offered to use a police station gym, he backed out. If he really, really wanted to fight them, as the challenger, he should have. He started making excuses.. If you are such a good fighter, why back out of the UFC? There werent alot of rules back then.

He wanted true no rules, no ref, no gloves or cups fight. A Magazine offered to host it at their own studio and then Orion backed out. So when an ACTUAL NEUTRAL location presented itself, the Gracies did not want to fight, they like to control the video, profits, and venue. No big deal really, except when you make it sound like Emin was the one that backe dout.

But he did backout numerous other challenges...in Holland against 4 freefighters who all wanted to fight him one by one off course...he talked his way out of that one! (i know, i was there!) In LA (i wasn't there) he did'nt want to fight Bas Rutten, later Boztepe claimed that Rutten came to his seminar/school with a gun because he was so scared of bozo!!??

Wing Whatever has always had alot of political infighting. the whole "invented by women, use less to beat more" thing has attracted the wrong type of person (non-athletic) in many cases. Now that MMA is so popular, athletic fighters types want the fast road so they can get in the ring quick, so they don't come to WT for training. Thus, we don't have alot of people in sports fighting for you to look at.

William was using the threat of Di Mak death touch and had an "I will fight anyone any time" sales pitch. He dissed on Leung Ting but wouldn't fight, and then anounced his "anytime anywhere" challenge in front of Emin. That is far different then going into a cage and fighting for a mass audience. and Emin today is the same age as Will was then, so don't be saying "Old Man" like he was weak and defenseless.

Which is what exactly? Don't get me wrong, I think Emin COULD have been a great fighter, but as there isn't any evidence besides his WORDS, then it's hard to just believe. That is why I like watching MMA, as even with all its faults, it is there for all to see and judge for themselves. Demos and displays of technique are great for theory and practice, but without fighting it is all art and no martial.

You are building a great two-legged stool. Without that third leg, no matter how good those two legs are it will FAIL as a stool.
Effective martial arts takes 3 legs:
1) Instruction - theory and technique
2) Conditioning - endurance, strength, body hardening, etc.
3) Application of 1 and 2 against non-complying, fully resisting opponents
The respect, honor, etc. parts are human philosophical traits and are not CRITICAL to becoming a martial artist, but sure help in being a good HUMAN.

Wing Tsun is very complicated and theory based. To be a student of WT you have to listen and follow directions. You have to work WITH your training partner in many of the drills. Competitive sports attracts people that want to beat everyone, they don't seem to like cooperating with their partner.
doesn't mean we don't spar or fight, just not on TV.
