It isn't that difficult to accomplish. Like the DaYan GuHong, the pieces are made in halves or thirds. All you need to do is take different colored resin (to make the plastic) and use identical molds, but not the same one repeatedly. You'll need 6 molds, 1 for each color. and simply make them, piece it together, and intead of stickers, the parts of the pieces that are visible will be colored with their respective...color. Hope it helped.
they should make the cubes with out stickers coloured plastic that was what i was thinking and maybe they should make that by putting coloured caps on the pieces so they don't need stickers
yeah that stuff is based on petrol so it melts the plastic.
i actually think it's useful if you have a really crap rubik's storebought to lube it with vaseline which will kinda wear off the pieces so it gets smother. Then when it's nicer you clean it out then silicone it.
Vassoline corrodes the plastic, so no. It does not work great. Granted it lubes it pretty well but it does make the turning a bit gooey, but it still will destroy a cube. Which is sad seeing how good the cube looks.
If you want to see it, I can make a video. But give me a little time to practice solving, since I am really rusty. My best time ever was 24s, but my "usual" solve times were in the 45s-90s range. Of course I seriously doubt I will be able to get back to times that low. ;-p But to make an on-topic comment, the painted cube is a nice idea. Although if someone is going to paint it, they should have made it a little more artistic. Perhaps put some nice symbols on the center square of each side...
Oh, so neither of us will ever win a national competition, eh? ;-) I really need to practice to see how close I can get to my old times. I would have done it by now, but I bought an AR-15 a little while ago, and have been having too much fun going to the range shooting it, and my .22LR pistol. ;-p
Wow. Are there really no rubiks cubes out there with colored plastic tiles and not stickers these days? The reason I ask is that sitting on my desk is my original cube I bought back when I was in high school in like 1982. Of course that was so long ago, I cant say for sure who the manufacturer of it was. Oh, and my friend and I who used to race each other both lubed our cubes with vaseline and it never seemed to cause problems for us, FWIW.
the vaseline is a solid (kinda) and offers resistance. it makes the cube slipperier but also adds some resistance. also, the oil from the vaseline erodes the cube's interior. i used silicone spray for my cube. you take apart the cube then spray the pieces in a full sweep spray then let it dry for a long time. i left mine for like 3 hours and it turns amazingly.
vaseline also contains petroleum distolence, which is a powerful corrosive. Your pieces will actually be semi-eaten by it. never ever lubricate your cube with vaseline. it also gives uneven tensions, and as thrawst said, a "gooey", bad feeling. use 100% silicone, or Jig-A-Loo. Look at monkeydude1313 's channel to show how it works.
well i had a really nice rubiks cube but it was like 4 years old and all my stickers fell off. i tried doing this myself and let me tell you its not fun. afterword it worked out well all the colors looked nice but i couldnt distinguish between black and blue (they were both dark) and some otherthings because of mild colorblindness so it didnt work out for me and currently i am breaking in a storebought rubiks brand cube.
I put Vaseline in my storebought (didn't know silicone was good for it...) and left it there (quite a few solves) for a few months... After cleaning it out (water) I put silicone in it, and it actually feels better than my DIY...
Although, the reason that they don't do that is because it costs money to get the different colored plastics, so it's not the best for their company, although I thought about this, and it's really a good idea.
god i lubracted it with vasaleen i thought it would work, it does work. But it makes a creaking noise Thanks thrawst, the next cube i get will be not lubricated wit vasaleen.
The bad things about paint are 1. what you mentioned in the video about chipping, and 2. you can't remove the paint very easily if you want to change the color scheme or w/e, I'm really dreading getting my Dianshengs and having to take the paint off, I use a Japanese color scheme, white opposite blue, yellow opposite green.
I managed to get ahold of a plastic tiled cube for about $5 off of a website. The link is gone now, but here's how it works:
It has the standard 54 squares, but instead of stickers, there is a plastic tile basically bolted to the cubes. You can't see it whenyou look at the cube, but a peice broke off of mine, so I saw how they did it. If they used some sturdyer tiles it could probably work.
A good idea, but if you'll ask me it's all BUSINESS. I think rubiks company thought of that maybe deacades ago. But ofcoarse stickers is 1 of the reasons why we go back to rubiks stores to buy & costumize our stickers from what color we like aside from buying the cube itself . With no stickers NO costumized colors & lesser profit for cube companies. So it's part business while it gives the consumer the sense of control on their cubes. . .Well thats just an opinion ofcoarse. . .
Yeah, I agree with you, if rubiks, or any other major brand of cube for that matter would come out with a cube with the colors somehow on there other than stickers so they would not come off it would make everyones life so much better.
thanks... but just one question. Does the brand make a big difference? cuz im not sure if its the wrong lubricant or the brand of the cube that makes it slower. i have a rubik's brand
dont use vaseline/ it will kill your cube. use heavy duty silcon -brand crc- or jig-a-loo. but for jig-a-loo dont use too much. it melts some plastics. but for the store bought cubes, spray as much as you want.
haha not only that but one of them is an imposter! posing as....pogobat! oh and to people who could'nt find his error it was he misspelled You're twice!
it will ruin the inside of the cube. silicone will dry in a very short time so it doesn't feel like the inside is sticky. it also lasts longer and works better.
the problem with that, would be that you would have to make each peice individually, with current branding, is that they only need to make 3 peices, corner, edge, center. and then just apply the sticers after they are put together
guys you may not care but if you are looking for a decent white 3x3x3 get a DIAN SHENG I got one off ebay it was lubed a bit allready and it is bye far the greatest cube i've ever worked with (and my friends allways beg me to solve their cubes so i've worked with a lot
they probably have thought of putting different colored plastic on the cube instead of stickers but they know stickers wear and people will buy more stickers so they want more money even though stickers really aren't that much
I've noticed on the Vcube (7, at least), the pieces are molded so that each face of the edge is on a different piece of plastic that snaps together (well, ok the edges are. Not the corners). I had this idea when I was considering how painful the stickering process for such a large cube would be, and how all the centers could just be one solid color, and it would be relatively easy to do.
Is that competition legal though? Also, I thought tiles did the same thing -_-....you can't buy colored tiles to place in instead of stickers on the outside of a DIY?
The problem that i first saw in manufacturing is something that most of you would all be familiar with. Note that on all of the cube distributing websites, cube4you etc, the colored cubes cost more money to make, obviously because of the colored plastic, and so combining multiple colors of plastics directly in a mold would make manufacturing expensive. A solution is doing something similar to what is done to easter eggs when you dip them in dye, but for now i would use spray paint
Sadly, this would pose a huge manufacturing problem. Basically there is just a mold for each edge and corner piece. The plastic beads flow into the mold and are heated and out pops the pieces. Also what would be difficult is that there would prob have to be a new piece of machinery in order to make this even possible. I wish this could work, but the way economics work; I don't see it happening.
i tryed dipping one of my cubes in paint and it worked for like a week then when i started to solve it my hands got all black idk what happend but when i disassembled it it was all rainbowy : I
maybe you could make completely black pieces, but then have plastic caps (that are the size of regular sticker) for all sides of the edges and corners.
Yes they would, but they wouldn't buy nearly as many stickers. In order to compensate for the loss of sticker sells cube price would most likely increase. Why make a perfect cube when you can make more money selling imperfect ones that are cheaper to make?
OMG i thought of that a long time ago and thought it wouldnt catch.... but..... You realized the same thing! The only problem would ya probably be that it would be hard to get 2 or 3 colors on one piece.
If they started to make a lot of cubes like this, there wouldn't be any market for stickers anymore.. It would be a loss for the company in the long run, because people buy stickers again and again, but a good cube can last an eternity.
They wont ever make a cube without the stickers on it, specifically from an economic standpoint. When then stickers wear off, what happens? You buy a new cube. When they don't, you dont have too.
Welcome to the business world. Im sure you'll eventually find a company that will make it, but the big names (i.e. Rubik's) will not.
LOL, I guess Dayan liked the idea!

maybe you could make completely black pieces, but then have plastic caps (that are the size of regular sticker) for all sides of the edges and corners.
ultrashinypalkia3394 3 years ago 2
Why no colored plastic? Money. Nuff said.
F2L4Life 3 years ago
If they introduced coloured plastic, people would still buy it. Marketing technique. Nuff said.
Who would want coloured plastic anyway? Stickers FTW.
Leviskatyboard 3 years ago
Yes they would, but they wouldn't buy nearly as many stickers. In order to compensate for the loss of sticker sells cube price would most likely increase. Why make a perfect cube when you can make more money selling imperfect ones that are cheaper to make?
F2L4Life 3 years ago
OMG i thought of that a long time ago and thought it wouldnt catch.... but..... You realized the same thing! The only problem would ya probably be that it would be hard to get 2 or 3 colors on one piece.

why shouldnt you use vaseline?
nerdyed 3 years ago
it makes your cube kind of slow and gunky in the inner workings.
shadoelement237 3 years ago
Oil dissolves plastic. Vaseline is an oil based lube. So if you use vaseline it will destroy your cube
gordo4444 3 years ago
That's what she said.
Frozenbrood 3 years ago
i did that but with spray paint and either i didn't do a good job or it just isn't a good idea
it was hard to turn and it smelt bad and i just wouldn't do it

you sir, are an idiot.
griffinkinley 3 years ago
If they started to make a lot of cubes like this, there wouldn't be any market for stickers anymore.. It would be a loss for the company in the long run, because people buy stickers again and again, but a good cube can last an eternity.

some on on twisty puzzles form is making a cube of collored plastic its cool
wilsonmitts 3 years ago
They wont ever make a cube without the stickers on it, specifically from an economic standpoint. When then stickers wear off, what happens? You buy a new cube. When they don't, you dont have too.
Welcome to the business world. Im sure you'll eventually find a company that will make it, but the big names (i.e. Rubik's) will not.
Yutz625 3 years ago
if ya get a mac you won't care about cubes anymore
