I just found this so, sorry to go back to the subject. I cannot believe that some people would rather listen to the nin cover???!!! Don't get me wrong, i've been into nin since 1990, but trent and his then cohorts did fuck all with it. And his voice is too fuckin whiney!
If you'd said that to me 30 years ago I'd have entirely understood, I thought they were "out of this world".. But they don't have the same impact now because I completely overplayed them. In 1980 (I was only about 16) I just assumed bands of this quality would keep on coming...
just shut the fuck up and enjoy the legent that is ian curtis.. for all the times I stood and watched him he will never stop making me feel like I was privileged to be there!
Is it Weird that I love the original Instrumentals but would rather have Trent's voice on it? i herd another bandcover JD's song but i hated it. i think NIN did a great job for a cover.
lyrics,drums,bass....are all too indescribable for me to begin to explain what this song does to me! thank you JoyDivision for transporting me to another level of emotions :)
Yes- this is a great quality upload. One of the best JD songs, and one of my favorite of all time. I actually based part of my novel 10 A BOOT STOMPING on the "Dead Souls" single and someone bringing Ian Curtis back from the dead. So I guess that makes me a huge nerd.
@armandsdamanhoo I'd heard that, and it would be awesome if it were true. That novel is a classic, and hilarious. Has it ever been confirmed? I know Ian was pretty literary, so it would make some sense even though the lyrics don't really go together.
@imonlyyou Daddy should bring it up from the basement :) It isn't so sad -- this song in particular, with its lively beat and melody -- is rather uplifting. Lots of so-called gloom/goth is actually celebratory.
Haha ! But I would hope they'd have more sense, they had their "fun" with "Ceremony". Which whilst Ceremony was released by New Order, it was a Joy Division song, but Ian Curtis died before it was recorded and released. There is a live version with Ian Curtis on the original release of the double album "Still".
I knew that, but I also thought it was on the live disc of the original 1981 "Still" vinyl release. I've just had a look at my old LP and you're quite right, "Dead Souls" isn't recorded live. Sorry for any confusion.
Indeed ! Ian Curtis would probably have found that amusing; he wasn't always miserable. The only live version of "Dead Souls" I have is from the original 1981 vinyl edition of "Still". This was a double album, with the second record being a live concert. Although I liked it way back when, it's quite poor quality. However the version of "Decades" is much better than on "Closer", warts and all. I'm pretty sure this has already been uploaded onto YouTube.
@imonlyyou cheer up man, one day your kids music whatever they maybe listening too, will be the "old music" who cares what other people think about your music, as long as you are have fun listening to em
@ASDMarauder007 Blessings, Marauder. No question many young reject their parents' culture, but when you love everything from Leadbelly to Bob Wills to Jerry Lee Lewis to the Beatles to Hendrix to Pink Floyd to Zeppelin to Neu to Springsteen to Lee Perry to the Clash to Los Lobos to the Orb to Explosions In The Sky, you're bound to hit common ground. Joy Division may give them the creeps, but my 7 year-old loves the song "Black Sabbath" from the first BS album. What more can I ask for?
@imonlyyou lol you may be surprised that i'm 17. XD. But yeah one day we will all grow old and be made fun off for it. But as long as you are having a good time, the mockery won't affect you at all.
Love Hendrix, Beatles, a little bit of Zeppelin and alot of clash.

this track is the foundation for bands like pixies and nirvana.
joy division had a handle on extremes of dynamic that was inspirational, and you cant tell me that those bands hadnt heard this track and thought.............
@biernes0013--Good f'ing point, man. Not to take anything away from Reznor's rendition...which pales in comparison to Joy Divisions' ver. in my opine. Aside from all of that, and considering the fact that Ian Curtis was so well read, I always imagined that he was giving props to the pre Perestroika Russian author Nikolai Gogol(who happened to write an extremely kick ass novel called "Dead Souls.") The subject matters differ, but it's a definite possibility.
Sorry to offend or be so critical to any nin fans, they're just a little too commercial for my taste & not quite as risk taking as the underground/under the radar bands i normally prefer but much more worthy than the majority of sell-outs out there.
I don't think I've ever heard of a Industrial Metal band being called 'commercial' before. And if for any reason it was called 'commercial', Nine Inch Nail's would be the reason for it. Referring to that NiN gave Industrial Metal a mass audience.
@MysteriousStrangerX3, You are forgetting Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt. That said, I am a lover of both Joy Division and Nine Inch Nails. These are still two Da Vinci's of music you are talking about so all this squabbling seems really petty.
I can't see how a decent cover of this brilliant Joy Division song is possible, so I'll never listen to Nine Inch Nail's version, and can therefore stay out of this debate !

@robolyleon Totally agreed; exceptional band - exceptional talent and utterly honest. Ian had an unparallelled ability to look within and drag demons to the surface. I'm sure this is largely due to his illness - either a direct result or the medication he was obliged to take. His lyrics seem quite visionary but that's with hindsight of course and probably true of anyone who'd ever taken their own life. The clues were all there - we just weren't paying enough attention at the time. RIP Ian.
@robolyleon: I only wish I saw Joy Division! What great memories you must have of those shows! I too have seen the Buzzcocks--they played in Philly about 15 years ago so it's been a while... Also saw PiL some years back. But you have seen the ULTIMATE group!
I've got nothing against NIN, but their version of this is way too slow and it lacks any real passion. Joy Division's original is just an unstoppable force of nature.
