A more extreme example of this would be people mixing your and you're up; there, we can be descriptivist but it doesn't mean what's being said is correct...

And finally, which nationality speaks the 'best' variety/standard of English...in prescriptive terms?

@hollymarg Languages do evolve; of course, and indeed there is no 'best' response, however to be prescriptivist is to champion the form that has been established in popular usage the longest, and here the subjunctive does have a specific purpose, and in losing it we lose a shade of meaning from English that many languages still enjoy. However, I agree that language change is dictated by popular usage, so prescriptivism is a lost cause.

@MrJoe000097 Hi - it's technically incorrect to say 'was' here for the reasons I mentioned, however the subjunctive mood in English has become somewhat obsolete recently, so you will hear people saying 'was' incorrectly, and although it shouldn't, 'were' indeed sounds quite formal and high register. So don't worry too much about using 'was'; most people won't think it's wrong. Although I do wonder why you were correcting grammar in the first place if you admit to having weaknesses yourself 8-)
