This Pick vs Fingers debate is just stupid, it's all about your play style and the sound you are looking for. When I play some punk sons such as Blink 182 I prefer the pick for the sound it gives. When I play anything older like Boston the sound of the fingers just fit right in. Their is no right or wrong to playing bass so give it up with this "do it with your fingers" shit and take some time to search some of the greatest bass players, be amazed how many use picks.

Just a suggestion, might help you reach the frets a bit quicker. Try making your fret hand more parallel to the neck, it's less strenuous on your wrist =)

How to get the pinky working: finger-per-fret is a good technique, but it's better to combine it with contra-bass fingering like Maxnoname says. Any time you're going to fret with the ring or pinky finger, just go ahead & use both. Use the fingers at the same time, you use more muscles & playing gets a lot more relaxed. Pinky shouldn't be sticking out like you're taking tea with the Queen. :)

good stuff man. just a tip, keep your fingers closer to the neck. don't lift them off so far when your not using them. it'll make it easier for you to move around the fretboard. also, don't push so heavily. relax a little. it doesn't take that much effort to push the string down to make a note. if you're not strong enough in your left hand, practice and it will get easier.

Wow, I added this video like 4 fucking years ago, and people still give me advice. I use my pinky (have for about 3 years) I don't use a pick anymore, and I'm a thousand times better than this. Well, I definitely can't knock your fretting technique since mine isn't much better (I had my left hand in a cast due to a boxers fracture when I was first learning) but seriously, lose the pick. Picks limit you so much. I understand that you're still relatively new to this so I'm not gonna sling abuse but trust me when I say the sooner you switch to fingers, the happier you'll be down the line.

thats great playin man, just a word of advice, so should stop playin with a pick because it gives you that click sound when you play. Its not something you want to have coming through your amp. just use your fingers that way everything sounds nice and smooth.

Stay with a pick if you want. The click sound from your pick they are crying about will go away if you set your bass head up right. I have been playing for over 15 years and play with a pick and my fingers. Screw what everyone else thinks you should use. Its all a matter of opinion.

you have to practice more, the way you hold your hand on the fretboard indicates that you have little to no control over what you're doing. And it's sounds like you're using a pick. You have to learn with fingers, after you mastered that, you play with whatever you want.

I Would only buy a bass that has great sound and feel to it.
