this is pretty useful, I do the same thing with my riffs write 12 tones on a paper and randomly choose 2 notes, 3 , 5, etc, find which frets are that same note and just play around :P (sorry for my bad english)
Thanks dave. This was very helpful. I've been using scale sequencing for warming up or the occasional quick scale run but as you said it can be quite predictable or boring. I never thought of using the sequences to jumble them up like that.
Hey Dave! I am very pleased with your videos, I have learned a lot in the last couple of months. Your method of teaching is very helpful and logical. My question is: will there be any lessons about the modes of the melodic minor scale? Best wishes: a virtual student :)
I think it would be cool you post a video about the home studio hardware that you use to record. Is it a Digidesign 002 I can see on the rack behind? thanks!
You rock! Your videos have been filling the gaps in my knowledge, after taking years of guitar lessons. I recently got back into playing guitar, and your videos have been providing me with the inspiration I need to feel like I'll finally be able to create music I'll be happy with. Getting back into playing now was perfect timing, as the videos of this season are what I've needed. Could you please expand more on this and rhythm? I'd love to learn more about creating nice solo & rhythm parts.
Hi dave...........ur vids are very informative and i absolutly love them...........I have a request....... can u do a video on how to play fast and how to setup ur guitar to play fast.............also u can also do a video on different guitar effects.
very cool, this is exactly what I need to work on. Your lessons are always spot on, creative and have a really unique and effective approach. I'll keep promoting you 'cause I believe a lot players that haven't seen you yet might benefit from watching RotW, take care Dave!
Dave, I noticed you write lefty but play guitar right handed as well. I'm the same exact way. Did you find you had to work extra hard on your picking when you were learning to play? I'm getting faster with more control then i used to have with my picking, but i learned how to play legato much easier.
really great Dave, I have one question friend hehe, Should we write any sequence that we make to remember it and to make our own sound? Thx you, your videos are really interesting. (Sorry for my english hehe). Bye! :)
thanx Dave. Ya know, even though these concepts seem like "common sense" to some of us, many people would never consider them. It seems to me that the single most important element of writing one's own material is having the courage to 'just do it'. I think the hardest thing for many of us is to learn to "just go for it". If you wouldn't mind, I think we'd all like to hear your thoughts on being original, while at the same time keeping true to your influences. Thanx again.
Thx, not sure if this answers your originality question, but I did a ROTW on originality a while back. Just check the archive (link found in the "more info" box.) ---->
This is a very interesting approach to writing riffs. I like how you are able to take any sequence of random notes and rhythmically make it sound awesome! The main thing standing between me and playing something like that though is "knowing the notes on the guitar COLD". I really admire your playing man. More so than the lightning fast shred guitar players. You make it much more interesting and...well, musical. Thanks!
Love your videos! :-)

Thx. Yep get those notes down cold and then when you're playing, keep rhythm as priority #1.
