  • Hey last workout is fatal not everyone can do it....

  • Dude does goodmornings with my squat weight!

  • hey, at 4:00 is that wise putting the barbell on my neck?

  • are you fat?

  • Hey Lee, I did lats pulldown 1st, then deadlift to replace good morning, after that dumbbell bent over row and finally shrugs. Do you think its enough routine for my back workout day?

  • @timbrandon94

Sure, that's plenty to do in a single workout.

  • leemhayward i no rows are very good for middle back thickness. but what hand position is best also when doing rows to hit the lower lats. or does wide grip and narrow grip hit the lower lats the same thanks

  • @mickey6192

I like to vary my grips when doing rowing and pulling exercises. But a narrow grip will work more of the outer lats and a wider grip will work more of the inner back. It's the opposite of what you think it would be.

  • @leemhayward thank you

  • do you need converse chuck taylors to do this??

  • @bruizer1100

Absolutely... The workout will just not be the same without them :-) LOL

  • "Heavy weights and high reps" From that statement alone, I know you don't what the hell you're talking about

  • @iamspid3rman

Like wise, I can say the same about your statement...

Have you ever heard of "DC training", or done a search for "Kroc Rows", those are some great examples of "Heavy Weights For High Reps".

  • @iamspid3rman really...because that's what Ronnie Coleman does all the time. He says he goes as heavy as he can and trains to failure, but Ronnie doesn't know what he's talking about does he?

  • it starts at 1:20

  • those good mornings look incredibly dangerous in my opinion. Ive never tried them but can anyone tell me if they are worth doing?

  • @DCPofficialfilm

Just go to my main channel page. I've got a full video about the good morning exercise that I just posted recently.

  • thumbs up for metalica !

  • your form suck!!

  • @MrCantfindgoodname

Well why don't you post up some videos of your own and show us all how it's done.

  • @leemhayward lol, I'don't have a camera, I don't intend to be mean, but seriously, look at your shoulders and knees jumping up and down 02:20, too much weight for sure , pullups are fine..

But hey, that's just my opinion

    Greetings

  • Hi Lee is there any good technique to doing pull ups ive never been able to do them or do i just need to work on my strength (my weight 260lbs) i pretty much just hang on the bar when i try lol

  • @NobbytheChili

Yeah, I've actually got a complete program that you can follow for this on my website called "The Progressive Pull Up Program" it's available at: LeeHayward. com/dvd

  • We Used to do good mornings in wrestling, thanks for clearing up exactly what they worked on!

  • dude ur form totally sucks! Your yanking the weight on the dumbell rows, ur jerking ur neck and kicking on the pullups etc etc.

U'd be better off just lowering the weight and doing it right, really feeling the contractions and squeezing the muscles.

  • So what were doing here tonight then is a hardcore, heavy back training session.

  • @leemhayward great guide dude!!! am looking to gain Mass for my First Natural Comp in July 2012 !!! is doing 4 Sets of 4 to six Reps on heavy a good way to gain Mass "along with a good diet of course =0)"

i tend to do only 4 Sets on Decline Bench 6 Reps Max Weight, then i'll do 4 sets of 5 Dips with 20KG then move on to say flys etc! well that's part of my chest workout! am i going in the right way?

Thanks for any tips you could share with me!!!

    Cheers Lee

    James

  • @MadStylezuk

Your training is fine, but the key that's going to make or break your contest prep is diet and cardio. Remember conditioning is critical, the more ripped you get the better when it comes to competition.

  • @leemhayward OMG you reply to me =0) hahah Thanks man! well im going to hit the Diet hard in May so that should give me a good 2 months of getting ripped ! right now im taking in 200G of protein and 200G or Crabs, 3 x Protein Drinks, Hand Full of nuts ! it's going hard but I've Gain more Def and Mass than the past few years of training ! i think i'll get a photo up of me now then another in time for my Comp! thanks for the reply dude!! Total Respect

  • @MadStylezuk

    You're welcome :-)

  • weird genetics

  • I work out my biceps the same day I do my back, would you recommend alternating between the two body parts or doing all of my back workouts then all of my bicep workouts?

  • @SvenicusGermainus

I will often pair up back and biceps together as well. They are complementary muscle groups.

  • you know for the last exercise, the 'Good mornings', you put the weight on your shoulders right, but isn't that more dangerous than deadlifting even though your working the same muscles? (apologies if it works different muscles, I must've not been listening then). So, why do it if, at heavy weights, you can't lift your back up again, so inevitably rolling the bar across the neck and off your shoulders that way, hence causing neck, back and possibly head injuries?

  • @jsufi1

Most people don't understand good mornings, they are actually easier then they look. The folks who say they are dangerous are the same folks who never ever do them. But this is a very popular exercise among powerlifters and strongman competitors. You should always do good mornings in a squat or power rack with safety pins. So if you can't lift the weight you just rest it on the pins at the bottom.

  • been doing your workouts in the gym very effective!! good work

  • A bigger Steve-O! haha

  • dude ur muscles r perfect man...

  • @1:04 high "rapes" FTW!

  • coldplays in the background ahah

  • I wish my gym played metallica, 24 hour fitness always plays teeny bopper shit

  • @MusicFanaticSMV Agreed. Playing Justin Bieber or Backstreet Boys. is not going to get anyone into a workout mood.

  • 130's bent over one are rows...respect for that weight...

  • Wait that was a whole workout? three exercises?

  • how many times a week should you workout your back?

  • Whens the next talk show lee? I love getting my questions answered by someone as experienced as yourself in the field of muscle building. I am glad that you're not the type to ONLY market things, but you're kind enough to help others who dream big.

  • @alucardwillfreed14

I'll be back home and doing the live Total Fitness Bodybuilding Talk Show next week.

  • I have a question, why if youre working your lower back with good mornings, would you wear a belt, it seems kind of counter productive... No hate im just wondering if its taking away from using all muscles when youre partially supported

  • @throwandhit72

When you do your lighter warm up sets you don't need a belt. But as you work up to heavier weights you can wear a belt to help support your core. The belt will allow you to lift heavier and thus train the muscles harder. I actually have a video about weight lifting belts that talks more about this, just search for: "What is the Best Weight Lifting Belt?"

  • @leemhayward The downside of wearing a belt is that it weakens your core muscles - kind of how an ankle brace actually weakens your ankles since it is giving artificial support. Unless you're doing super retarded weight, or squats or deadlift, I wouldn't recommend a belt.

  • @leemhayward Gotcha man, see, i know the whole theory behind support as i've been lifting for about 6 years. And with all due respect i wasnt questioning your methods, i just looked at it as kind of counter productive because the excercise was working on lower back specific/hamstrings. I looked at it as kind of the equivalent as trying to work forearms yet using straps ya know?

  • Hey Lee ....why is it so important to do high reps in the first excercise...is bulking suposed to be low reps high weight?

  • @bernard5553

The key to building muscle is placing stress on the muscles. You can do this with a wide range of reps. I have a video you should watch called: "How Many Reps Should You Do To Build Muscle"

  • for what ever reason 1 arm rows hurt my trap near my shoulder blade(left). feels like a sharp inpingement. so i stopped doing those. i do reg bent over rows and dont feel it hurt at all. kinda weird. i guess the angle is slightly diffrent and not putting the affected muscle in a weird spot.

  • @inktoxicated

That's fine, not every exercise works for every body. You need to adjust things according to your body type and what works for you.

  • 2:55 fuck yeah metallica

  • Thesoccergod87

Haha that's why he he Is single right?..oh wait, my dude lee here has a fly woman by his side, patricia , so him being "too big" hasn't effected him. And chicks may or may not dig that, it all depends on ones preference..you can't speak for all.

  • Hey lee, i can only do like 6 pull ups. Is it still worth doing?

  • @Uknowmysteez1

Absolutely, keep doing them consistently and you'll increase the reps. You can even try doing negative reps where you stand on a bench and use your legs to help you "jump up" to the top and then slowly lower yourself back down. This will help build up your pull up strength quickly.

  • this is retarded, after two sets of dumbell row you would be burnt

  • Wow props for that last exercise lol that was crazy lookin, never even heard of that b4! Learn something new everyday I guess lol.

  • hey lee how often do you deadlift? and do you do it on back or leg day?

  • @krb0123

I do deadlifts once a week with my back workouts.

  • @leemhayward no offense bro, but you are way too big. It's kind of gross. Chicks definitely don't like that kind of body

  • hey i`m having problem with my chest i do i do everything for my chest . my arm, shoulder, leg, calf all develop but my chest what can i do get my chest to grow

  • Hi lee, i have been training for a bout a year and a half, ive just recently cancelled my gym member ship and bought myself a home gym, but recently ive been having bad problems with my elbows when ever i try to lift a weight my elbows click and they ache, its really uncomforting, i dont know what to do, as its restricting me from training. Please can you all thumb this comment up so Lee can see it, i really need help. :(

  • @borashnikov I used to suffer pretty badly from this, I started taking cod liver oil capsules and after about 2 weeks i noticed a big difference and it was complatley gone after a month.

  • @samr0ss alright thanks for that, ive just rested 2 weeks and not done anything, the pain has totally gone now, did you take the capsules while you were training? or did u rest?

  • @borashnikov I continued to train as normal taking 1 1000mg capsule a day at the recommendation from someone at my gym, it also worked for them. I continue taking them for the EFA's and vitamins too.

  • @samr0ss alright thanks alot for the help, will buy some tomorrow and hopefully get back with you on feedback!!

  • Lee - great vid. Do you thihnk it's better to do one-arm rows standing or with one leg on a bench? Earlier this week I made the change from bar rows to one-arm rows, and I got KILLER back pain from it which is disappointing because I want to keep my back workout varied and I hear one-arm rows are best. What would you recommend by way of correct technique? Core strength first? Props. :)

  • @LennyRhys

I personally like to do 1 arm dumbbell rows standing with my leg straddled (just like I'm doing in this video). I find this improves balance and stability and generally allows for heavier weights to be lifted.

  • @leemhayward excellent will try it with tomorrow's back workout, thanks! :)

  • Wish my gym played enter sandman :(

  • hey lee! are you sure good morning are good exercises? isn't that how bruce lee factured his spine??

  • Your not getting a good stretch on the back muscle...working out the movement not the muscle

  • Good mornings with my Max Bench?... Good Game

  • I Love Coldplay :] lol

  • Hey Lee, I was wondering, do those 'Good Mornings' put like mass on the back area, what I mean is, I am kind of a scrawny guy, and I want to look thicker, if you get what I mean, will they?

    Cheers in advance.

  • @Shizzlecrads

Good mornings build up thickness in the back. They also help to strengthen your core and help to increase your squat strength. It's a fantastic exercise that you should do regularly in your workouts!

  • @leemhayward

Oh ok, thanks man, your workouts are very good, and they are more beneficial comparing them to my current workouts and other youtube channels, keep up the good work!

    :)

  • those good mornings looks like they'll snap all yo shit up.

  • How do you warm up then, like how do your sets correspond with your weight of dumbbells etc..?

  • @IQuuixXI

I've got a video that explains how to warm up before lifting. Just search for "Pre-Workout Warm Up Exercise Routine"

  • Those good mornings looked powerful!

  • this gym has awesome music!!! unlike my gym where they only put those terrible pop songs from the radio....

  • me likey ALLOT!

  • i dont have enoguh weight for 1 arm dumbbell rows or deadlifts, this sucks can only go max 300, on my barbell and only 70 pounds on my dumbell, feel like a noob

  • Why don't you drop down the weight and do the exercises properly? Bad form Broski!!

  • @DrmrGuy1979

    Ahhh, gotcha. My bad man.

  • @DrmrGuy1979

    ''Plantar muscles'' ?

Deadlifts hit your entire body basivcally xcept your chest

    , num nut.

  • Hey Lee, I'm in Los Angeles as well. What's your view on doing deadlifts vs. good mornings?

  • @asklyar

I like doing both deadlifts and good mornings, you can alternate back and forth between the 2 exercises. Both work the back, hips, glutes, and hamstrings heavily.

  • @leemhayward Thank you. I appreciate your answer. BTW, are you in the Santa Monica area?

  • @asklyar

I've visited California before, but I don't live there. I live in Newfoundland Canada.

  • @leemhayward Must get cold up there.

  • @leemhayward where in Newfoundland, Im half canadian, i visit my family every christmas and summer.

  • look youtube added something called reaction and well. im looking for something better than incredible like awesome, beastly but nope. just thought you should know that.

  • нщгку ыекщтп!

  • You are impressive bro.

  • does anybody rate deadlifts as a good workout for the back??

  • i want to try good mornings but it looks strainful on the back

  • @shaqster187

Do them just like you would any new exercise... Start off light and build up gradually as you get stronger.

  • @shaqster187 it sux deadlift is 100000 times better if u want mass

  • your advice: do heavy weight and high reps.

    thanks for that.

  • YO LEE, i struggle with pull ups with bodyweight alone. I can rep out about 10 or so at most and I want to better at pull ups. Would weighted pull ups help in my situation? How can I get better at pull ups quick? it seems Ive reached a plataeu

  • @DavidSungSongs

I've got a good program that you should check out on my website LeeHayward*com

It's called the "Progressive Pull Up Program" and it covers a complete step by step graduated training system for going from doing bodyweight pull ups to doing weighted pull ups.

  • lee at 2:45 how much are you pulling up totally? Ive been doing pullups at 200lbs and i cant imagine putting a 45lb plate on my belt. Im going to try next back day. Btw your one strong dude.

  • METALLICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • he lost more fat :D

  • lee hayward, i appreciate your videos a lot. but do you take steroids? with or without them you're still one cool dude :P

  • @bscutajar

I'm a natural bodybuilder, I just don't think steroids are necessary for the average bodybuilder to reach their fitness goals. I prefer to focus on the total package of "Heath & Fitness".

  • @leemhayward thanks for replying man.

  • Is that Enter Sandman by Metallica @ 3:10 :D

  • @MrJoce990 yup

  • sorry but that is really bad form for the single handed db rows.... u need to get down more and let the weight drop a bit more so it can help u develop ur back better.... itll rip it more as opposed to working ur arm more... u want that full movement to really get a good effect with the weight.... im 15 and i do those with 110.... 3 sets of 10.... highest weight at my gym... otherwise great tips and ill definantly be using the good mornings from now on

  • @heatdeck67 Theres plenty of variants to the one arm DB row bro, but at 15 you wouldnt know that. The way lee is doing them is one of the most common ways ive seen BB'rs do them over the years. 21 years of watching myself and others do them is long enough to give an honest opinion.

  • @mistertuber I respect that but i dont see people doing that.... ever... it strains the back really bad... almost like developing a retarded one sided hernia lmao (i know they basically occur one sided but im just trying to make a point that is fucks wiht ur back really bad if u do it that way).... and BB'rs go for wideness and thickness when using this excersise not for arms.... thats a horrible mistake and for 21 years of experience that is quite sad that u dont know that...

  • not to mention the fact that his back is not straight, he is putting the pressure on his lower back, hips, and legs instead of Lats and a bit more upper body, and his legs are in a retarded position ad they should be in a (one knee bent forward, the other straight back... both bending as u go down for higher weights) <- yeh that type of thing.... altogether he isnt doing that correctly and could be getting so much more from it if he was doing it right.....

  • @heatdeck67 too bad you didnt and cannot factor in the spinalcord positioning, the underdeveloped and over developed muscles involved in the "his" action, ive seen guys doing it your way with there knee up on the bench and the perfect 30degree bent in the elbow. Too bad those kids are still the same size and dont ever seem to develop much. arnold, ronnie, kevin, phil and many many other Professional bodybuilders prefer this way, but im sure we all do it ina position that feels the muscle

  • @mistertuber Most BBr's do not do it that way... i dont limit myself when using the bench... i do it standing so i keep most of the weight on my upper body and upper body... ur thinking is the right one about the bench because u cant let ur arm drop on the way down... to gain muscle there are a lot of factors.... i wont get into that but his position is really awkward, doesnt work too much, and messes up ur lower body...

  • if i do good mornings for my back workout, should i not do dead lifts aswell on the same day? if yea then which one is a better exercise, dead lifts or good mornings? thanks

  • Your heavy weight an you did high reps. I don't think that's you heaviest

  • @leesonrider

It's actually the heaviest db's we have at the gym, so I can't go any heavier.

  • @leesonrider YOUR A MONSTER. GREAT VIDEOS KEEP THEM COMING

  • *subscribed :)

  • not gonnna lie. if i tried that pullup thing after that other workout... i would just drop dead.

  • holly shit that last workout should be renamed "good night!" ...for if you mess up there goes your head!!! hahaa nice video im off to the gym to do the first 2..scared of the last :\

  • for me, when i do dumbbell rows, i prefer lighter weights and just use my back muscles to pull my elbow up rather than my biceps.... i feel this activates more back than arm muscles...

  • You guys have a playlist of awesome motivational songs in your gym. Ours play the opposite. I mean who would want to do explosive reps on a set of britney spears and Miley cyrus songs. I couldn't last a giant set on those motherf$&^#$. I brought an ipod ever since. Good back workout by the way

  • you go so fast, you not even ripping the muscle to its full potential , go slower i guarantee you will see more results.

  • Thank You so much for taking the time to answer !

    I will keep looking ....

  • Please can anyone help me ,

What are these specific dumbbells called that you see @ 1:25 ?

I'm looking forward to build my own basement gym but I can't seem to find these things ?

    Please help !

  • @NexisFilms

Sorry, I don't even know the brand of these dumbbells. There is nothing written on them. You can even make your own db's by buying the handles and a ton of 10's, 5's, and 2 1/2's pound plates.

  • IVANKO Dumbell Set.

You can find it on amazon.com

    $4000

  • @3balam3

    Thank You soo much !!...

    I found them .....

  • doesn't wearing a lifting belt defeat the purpose of doing good mornings? I'm not trying to be a smartass or anything, ive just never done them so im curious.

  • @BodybuildinginTX

I save the belt for my heavy working sets. But do all your lighter warm ups without the belt. This way you'll get the best of both worlds.

  • @leemhayward Cool. Thanks Ill be giving em a shot next time.

  • This guy is short but solid. How tall are you man? I'm guessing 5'6".

  • 130lb dumbells,lol i'm only 190lbs and i can those easy..

  • @bansheestang81 yep and im sure you have wings and can see through walls too. Oh and i bet you're hung like a horse, right? lol. This guy uses proper form, something you probably know nothing about.

  • ho hum....ill never be as jacked as this fellow. Oh well ill keep trying

  • STEVOOOOOO!!!!!! Looks just like him

  • as soon as i see lee hayward on a video i back that shit up straight away, fail bodybuilder.

  • whats with the bad form on the one arm rows

  • What a fucking beast

  • how can you do max weight AND high reps, that doesnt work

  • Some great tips here.

I would be wary of the "good morning" exercise and emphasise the importance of warming up and working up from a light weight. I now suffer from back problems from this and other exercises putting a lot of strain on the lower back. But if you are confident in your lower back I suppose it's a good movement. I may be wrong but I seem to remember reading Bruce Lee permanently damaged his back doing "good mornings" and it buggered him up for life.

  • not to be negative or anything, but why wear a belt when doing good mornings? Doesn't that negate the purpose of the exercise itself?

  • I wish i could work out my lower back muscles :( I'm suffering from backpain so i better be carefull with exercises like that. (and im only 28yrs, backpain truely sucks)

  • I really want to build size in my lats, but more importantly strength. I really watched my form earlier, should I include an "explosive" lat exercise?

  • You are a monster Lee. Those good mornings are seriously impressive, not to mention the other two lifts you did. Most guys cant even row that much with BOTH hands.

  • you are jerking

  • Wow 130lbs that's crazyyy, I can do 100lbs but only for 8 reps......

  • I smell a Kroc Row.....

  • @bigmar57

My little rows are only a fart in the wind compared to a Kroc row :-)

  • @leemhayward do you think dumbell rows are more beneficial then doing it with a barbell

  • @codeman95291

Not really, both exercises are good. You can incorporate both variations into your workouts.

  • Damn, Lee. 130 lbs. 30 reps on the one-armed row. that's more than my body weight.

  • You seem to be using your legs and hips alot why not do a barbell clean instead with heavy weight!

  • Hey Lee are you gona do someday (show us) a grip training i know your a big fan of heavy grippers(which i buying a year ago) but other than using heavy grippers like 15 rep deadlift Pull ups etc

  • @yoluigi he posted a video on hand grippers, just in case you didnt know

  • so in terms of trying to build mass in general would you say all exercises should be more quick and explosive or really slow and controlled or maybe a mix of both workouts?

  • @kingshott1

A mix. Some exercises work well for heavy explosive type lifting and others work better with slower and stricter form.

  • Great video!

    Thanks always!

  • metalica in the baackroud 3:00 :X ... nice exercise

  • Do pro-hormones work well, do you have any experience with them?

  • @MaaNonu123

Pro-hormones and testosterone boosting supplements tend to work best for people who need them the most (i.e. guys in their 40's and older). They are pretty much a waste of money for young guys who naturally have high testosterone levels.

  • I love good mornings
