I did that exact portage when I was a kid in the 70's. It was a wet year, and Duck Creek was a raging torrent with literal clouds of black flies and mosquitoes. The Duck Lake floating bog was scary...you could stick a canoe paddle about 6 feet into the muck without resistance, just off the trail. The overland portage was littered with downed timber. We caught one pike at the sand beach on BML. Still a fond memory.
We didn't have rain, thank goodness, otherwise we too would have been knee deep in mud.

Yulp. The portage after that on the way to big lake was pretty un-maintained. down trees and such....
