  • yes it is the LOVELY EMMA! unmistakable

  • i think this is Matthews :) pretty

  • Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • what a beautiful rembeption of this aria! just love it! brava veramente. or it suposed to be in french? lol

  • This is DEFINITELY Emma Matthews.

  • Die Emma ist gut,, aber an Natalie Dessay kann sie mit "Lakme" noch nicht anknüpfen.

  • A really wonderful voice. One of the best. Pure, and bell-like with superb diction. Charming stage presence. She will be one of the 'the greats'

  • I first heard Emma Mathews on ABC Classic FM here in Perth Australia and what a superb voice when being live on digital raidio. The announcer had nothing but total praise for her, and I have to agree.

  • Me too steinwaygrande1 ! I wrote down her name straight away - she has a beautiful voice!

  • Dispite the poor sound, her voice still shines through. The way she hits the top notes without screaming is truly amazing.

    Tolstow.

  • lovely!! had not been excited by this aria "recently" since Dessay.

It's a pity there's not much material form Matthews on youtube.

  • i saw here last year as Lucia. I had previously seen Sumi Jo who was great - but Emma Matthews was just on a hogher plane. Massive, clear top notes, held for an eternity.

I am seeing her tonight in Bellini'a Capulets and Montagues - and I already have another ticket to see her again next thursday. She definately has the quality of Sutherland, even Callas.

  • i prefer Lily Pons's version!

  • Brava

  • dessay is the best !

  • in your dreams!

  • funny, last note sliding:/

  • I could quibble about quirks in the voice, but, Damn! the girl can sing! Lovely voice, admirable technique, nice top, no fudging on the coloratura, and a decent trill?? 4 out of 5 for Emma! I'm a new fan.

  • She has such a true "thick" tone for this song- mostly this song is performed by the light/coloratura sopranos because of its top notes but Em does an amazing performance (one of my new favs.) mostly because of her delicacy with the song but also having some power under her notes.

    Beautiful-BRAVA

  • Go Em,

you are a legend, absolutley beautiful as usual!

  • Go Em, you rock

  • She's good. And she's singing Lucia for the first time this year, which should be interesting.

  • stunning top

  • I got to see her perform this live, this video really doesn't do her justice but it is nice seeing it again. I never thought I'd get to. (^_^)

  • Her voice is lovely and her technique admirable.

I find the acting a little strange and I'm not sure she captures the various moods of the aria very well. 4.5/3

  • 4 for voice

    1 for acting

maybe it was the director? her voice is interesting and the top is awesome

  • I didn't know Emma was singing this rep. This is great to hear and she tears things up! Her middle voice is so full of color I can't wait to see how her continues to develop.

  • Please listen to Tetrazzini's italian version of the same aria. It's called "Dov'è l'indiana bruna" and in my opinion is even better.

Add it to your Lakme contest!

  • Her warm voice has a nice 'ring' to it. Easy and flowing coloratura. Loud and clear topnote's. 4/4

  • I'm 99% certain this is Emma Matthews, not Leanne Kenneally. They shared the role: Emma sang it in Melbourne, Leanne in Sydney. This looks and sounds a whole lot more like Emma than Leanne.

  • I was told this was from Sydney, and this is the name that was listed in the cast. Of course, using a tape like this, I am not certain. I would like to know for sure.

  • And I'm 100% sure it's Emma Matthews.

  • it is SO Emma!

  • @primalamusica

I have had the immense pleasure of watching Emma Matthews perform many roles for Opera Australia. She's wonderful--and I agree that there is too little of her on YouTube or DVD. Opera Australia productions and singers are better than any I have seen in the UK or Europe.

  • This production looks familiar...

A little patchy for me overall... 3.5/3.5

  • She's terrific. I googled her and found that she had the supreme pleasure of sing Le Nozze Di Figaro with the incredibly hot Teddy Tahu Rhodes last year in Melbourne, Australia. And she appears to be quite lovely, in addition to having a beautiful voice and a real trill. 5/4

  • 4/5

  • Very good! 4.5/4.5

  • who is this? I have never heard of her?

Anyway, she does have a very bright timber, which is perfect for this aria. Overall, I am very impressed with what I see. Does anyone know anything about her? 5/5

  • she is prima donna of Opera Australia, but hasn't sung NEARLY enough outside. She has a family and seems happy to sing iN Australia only for the moment.

  • she is australian.

    studied in Perth.

moved over to sydney maybe 5 or 6 years ago and is definately making a big name for herself among the ranks of OA. Still young. She is going to hit the world stage very soon. Next Joan Sutherland!!

  • Hopefully she wont end up with the same plum in the throat sound Joan had in the end

  • Very nice, indeed ! I would love to hear more of this voice.

  • I love her voice. This is probably the kind of coloratura soprano Leo Delibes had in mind. I like her quick vibrato and effortless high notes.

  • Not digging the vibrato. 3/4.

  • After revisiting this, I would like to change my score to 4/4. I was letting my personal opinion of her vibrato get in the way of noticing that she has a very good performance here.

  • very lovely!

    kiss,

    ~*~Sarah~*~

  • her timbre is exquisite...

    4/5
