When I saw DT in Chicago (Roseland) in '08, I was front row in front of JP. His guitar was so loud, I could hardly hear any other instruments. Even drums were faint in the background. It was cool to hear what JP was playing but it completely killed the musical experience. I had to move back 10 rows to hear the overall mix thru the general monitors. If they're not plugged in, was I hearing just the two cabinets in the back??
@wassuppaska Do you wear earplugs? i got special custom muso earplugs made up. Hearing centers might do them if you havnt. Cos i play several instruments. But they are great, they have accustic filters in them which take out excessive damaging noise and let in the rest of the frequencies. It makes live music sound SO much better. Strange but true. I highly reccomend it.
@slickstrings one of the reasons i like listening to albums more than live concerts (usually) is that concerts are too damn loud. Kinda hard to hear all instruments clearly. I have to put my fingers/earplugs in my ears if i wanna hear a solo. But then, some of the dynamics are lost. I'd love to have some good plugs. Which do you recommend?
My question was more directed at this video's "secret". If JP's front cabinets aren't plugged in, how come I nearly went deaf from standing in front of them?
@wassuppaska the cabinets he uses are more for his own use id say. hes still running through the house speakers. they mike his cabinet to get it. he probably has one for clean tones & one dirty. as for the plugs, there are many companies that make many types. look up any hearing centers that can test your ears and ask about special moulded plugs. my music ones are for musos. in loud areas, i can have a conversation with someone without yelling. and they are so small you cant see them. :)
Something else you have to remember is that, to get the full potential out of what are likely 100 watt amps, they have to be up pretty damn loud-- louder than would be practical, or acceptable, for stage volume considering modern PAs and considering the way sound men are now. So a lot of it is about not compromising on his tone
why would petrucci be pissed? Anyone that knows about playing live shows knows that those are dummy cabs (stage props) His cabs are mic'd up in the back.. He uses monitors on stage
@fixxxer602 They don't use monitors anymore, in-ears only. That's why he has those diamond plated boxes on his pedalboard cause he cant rest his feet on monitors anymore.
Whatever the excuse for why he and others are doing it, I don't care. If Michael Ammott can use two full REAL stacks on stage and Tony Iommi can use 8 REAL cabinets and 8 REAL heads on stage, then by the time I'm headlining, I will be using REAL stacks. No fake cabs for me. My one half stack will do for now, but there will be REAL stacks on stages for me. Everyone will just have to live with that. HUMPH!!
@Ninjaro you sound stupid like a little kid.. Why the fuck would you have 8 heads and 8 cabs.. You would fuckin drown out everyone and not 2 mention the people in the front row would not even be able to enjoy the show..you obviously don't know how mic'ing equipment and the use of stage monitors works.. fuckin noob

You are kidding me. FAKE CABINETS? WTF!!!??? That totally ruins it for me. I'm sure as hell not going to be using any fake cabinets. My stacks are going to be real, even if there is just two stacks. To heck with the fakery!!! SHET!!!!!
Personally attacking people you don't know, is stupid. I don't give a damn what "most people" think or what "most people do". I'm going to do it my way and I've stated my opinion on the matter. You don't like it, too bad. Get over it. Iommi doesn't do it. Michael Ammott doesn't do it. I'm not going to do it. END OF STORY.
I don't need to "speak to professional sound engineers or guitarists" about a subject I have an opinion on that differs from yours because I am a professional guitarist and I choose to use real stacks rather than fake stacks and iso cabinets. We simply disagree on this approach. To each, his own.
@MuvoTX good question. I wondered about that.. Maybe it is some sort of sound isolation or perhaps just covered for before the show so nothing happens 2 them..
most bands don't use the amps you see on stage, they'll have smaller amps with a microphone in front of them backstage, and have the microphone wired up to the PA system.
@sportsportsport if you have watched "clips of the new dream theater dvd" (made by same people who did psycho exercises) you see the result of john petrucci's reaction to finding out at the end
the others are probably like DAMN YOU MIKE!

he doesn't need to plug in any cabinets to make them work. he shreds so fast they automatically get a positive ion nuclear charge.

I really think that is genius with the tent for James LaBrie, that would be kinda cool if i were a singer, almost like having a fort haha.

Petrucci had to reduce the number of cabinets in order to keep the death rate low...

I don't think there would be any reason to have speakers loaded in the false cabs.

Don't be stupid. Most of the rock guitar players are using 2-4 cabinets, even if there are hundreds on stage. It's pretty obvious.
