I've had clicking/jaw problems as long as I can remember. My joint was "screwed" for lack of better words since 14. I did all the splint/braces/allighment stuff at that time. I'm 27 now, in excruciating pain, and feeling lost. I'm taking ibpreufen round the clock. I cant chew. I only "eat" liquids.. I don't talk for the most part (well to my fiance....maybe for a few min total), because it hurts. I'd cry, but the pain skyrockets with crying for whatever reason. I'm hoping for help. Anything.
Having been seeing Dr. Hoffman for about 2 1/2 years now, I must say, Dr. Hoffman is one of the best, if not the best, in his field. For those of his patients who wind up needing surgery, he always starts with less-invasive procedures. After many surgeries and procedures, we just recently made the decision to do a bilateral total joint replacement of my TMJs because of my degenerating condition. I'm almost not nervous for it because I know I'll be in such good hands with Dr. Hoffman!
Darn the camera guy inturrupted you (at 1:12)... you were talking about JRA (Juvenille Rhematoid Arthritis. I have had JRA since I was 2 years old. I am 34 now. The JRA is mostly in my knees, (have a little in ankles, shoulder, elbow, fingers- not too bad though). But my JAW!!! OW!! It hurts all the time. When I move it I hear grinding. Do you treat TMJ the same as JRA if it is in the jaw?
After a detist adjusted 4 crowns on my upper right I went into severe tmj. The pain was severe and constant. I lost 15 pounds right away because I couldn't chew and didn't know how to eat. I had pain in my jaw joint, neck , back. I went into entire body spams and was in bed for an entire month.
To continue my story, Dentists don't realize how sick people get when their teeth don't fit together properly. I'm just now starting to function again since I am on a liquid an mush diet. I resent not being able to eat the foods I normally eat. I keep my mouth open in a natural position and this is relieving my tmj. The problem is I will not be able to eat solid foods unless my teeth can be fixed.
My pain is about gone after a prosthodontist made me a splint. Hopefully my bite can be later permantly corrected and I'll be able to eat solid foods again. fingers crossed.
Of course, surgeons know what their talking about, and they know how to cut. But I have a solution without surgery. I works, it is 100% successful, It is BETTER than surgery. Once this joint is opened it is never the same. And it does NOT solve the problem of the TMJ!
from what I read this anonimous gentleman must be some orthodontist, or some gnathology student, with a severe case of surgery phobia, poor fellow, will not see beyond his nose, or try sharing his wealth of hyper efficient non surgical (Goodness no¡) treatments, what a peculiar fellow.
You don't know what you are talking about. You are just ignorant. Gnathology is about teeth, TMJ is not. Once you opne that joint is is never the same. You shouldn't be spouting where you have no knowledge of what so ever.
What is your solution to cases of TMJ that are deemed surgical? I know surgery should be avoided at all costs, but to give you an example of why I had it, my jaw was locking daily, sometimes for 48-72 hrs. at a time (w/ PT, a splint, neurologist, Botox, etc). The pain of my masseters spasming and my bones pinching each lock was unbearable, and my most recent surgery stopped the locking. My TMJs aren't perfect, but that surgery improved my quality of life and slowed down bone degeneration.
None, no cases are demmed surgical, that is the beauty of my treatment. Yes sometbhing may change with any joint srugery, BUT is it necessary. YOUR DRs do it because that is ALL they know. Again, check out my website!!!!!!
My boyfriend jaw joint locks so that he can barely fit two fingers between his upper and lower teeth. He can't even properly bite into an apple. I say he has to have surgery, but all his dentist did was give him a night guard. It helps with the headaches, but his bite is no bigger than before.
Surgery is unneccessary most of the time. Even if you replace the joint or open the joint the bite is still dysfunctional. Most oral surgeons do not rectify the tmj issue. There is still a balance issue not solved. This doctor is not savvy on tmj, listening to him makws me fall asleep. See Dr Hernandez, he knows what he talking about. This guy doesn't.
Actually, Dr. Hoffman is a world-renowned TMJ surgeon. I don't know of Dr. Hernandez, but I live in the DC area (so have the medical expertise of Georgetown, Hopkins, etc. not far away) and was still sent to Hoffman in NY for surgery on my TMJs. He's very conservative so only operates if he knows it will help, and he prefers arthroscopic surgery to be less invasive. I know he "made you fall asleep," but he's a surgeon, not a TV personality. Trust me, he knows what he's talking about.
TMJ involves more than the joint. The bones and muscles of the head and neck, the swallow mechanism play a huge role in this problem. So even renowned surgeons only deal with a symptom. He did not solve the problem. guess what, your problems are still present. The body is feeling it. Symptomology is not the solution. And that is all you got with the Joint surgery. he know what he's talking about in surgery of course. But not the TMJ condition.
I realize TMJ involves more than the joint; I happen to get Botox for my jaw and neck muscles. Dr. Hoffman didn't just treat my symptoms; he treated my jaw joint that had been seriously injured. My CT scan, MRI, and other x-rays showed great bone degeneration, explaining my pain. Based on that, the fact that we had exhausted all non-surgical treatments/therapies, and that my qualify of life was severely suffering from being in pain 24/7, he decided that surgery was right for my specific case.
NOT TRUE, because you still have a "pathologic bite" does he or you knows what that means. The joint is surgically worked on, but the situation is still the same. You did not explore all the solutions, just the ones he knows.
Again, could you tell us what your 100% successful solution is? Why don't you tell us what you think is right and back up your own philosophy? All you're saying is that everyone/everything is wrong, and that's not exactly helping. Oh, and BTW, I have a freaking army of doctors and specialists, so no, I'm not just doing what Hoffman knows. To give you an idea of how bad and out of the ordinary my TMJ is, almost every one of my doctors has said I'm a case to be written up about in the journals.
You've heard of a pack of dogs barking up the WRONG tree. Well, your freaking team of DRs are doing exactly that. My treatment is base on chronic dysfunction movements of the body that create havoc with the nrvous system, therefore your brain does not have orderly control over your systems, Everything is out of wack. I don't care how "special" you or your team think that you are, I can fix you. Tmj is a joint, and needs to be treated a such. Only THEY don't know or you would be better.
Seriously....can you tell us what your qualifications are? And what do you actually do to treat people? You're just throwing out terms, not an actual plan. If you actually have more knowledge and success than these people, I'll be on the next flight, but what do you actually do??
Hey, how severe is your Tmj? my is very severe too, it even makes me stutter. And now, the otherside of my face has started with the early symthoms of TMJ.
Amazing how obtuse some people can be, and go on and on without explaining themselves without even giving a name or a profession, the flak being shot from an anonimous position is evere so questionable.

How is your jaw to this day? (regarding your TJM surgery) Did you have artheritis or something like that in the joint?

A night guard will make the matter worse! It is unfortunate that GPs do this. It is the wrong treatment to do.
