cool vid, but first he says stuff about how you shouldnt just google stuff to try and find techniques to be better, but shouldnt a drummer, just as trying both metal and jazz, also try out these different techniques?
@acapolypse all hes saying is that a technique only works if you spend time practicing it, its not going to instantly work miracles just because you have read about how to do it
anybody who ever writes off derek as just a fast stereotypical metal drummer needs to watch and listen to more of his material and see how diverse he is. and what he says about technique and practice is so true. I know far too many musicians who try to just learn how to be as smooth fast or technical as these pro's and they end up playing sloppy when they need to build up a diverse repitoire of different techniques if they want to be versatile. Also speed isnt everything
I'm liking this guy some much more, he got a lot of technicque. I play metal, but I also want to learn to play Jazz, by the way I liked the music he is playing, if someone knows the name of the songs or something please tell me. Hehe I liked what he said about the jazzers, hehehe, I love Nile!!
i love what he said about metal drummers needing to be versatile, but also other drummers listening to metal and trying it just to become better versed behind the drums.
ahh that why you have 2 different bases.. on for metal and other for idunno other styles... but clean... i found double base is better that double pedals

That's why I admire Derek Roddy, because not only does he play metal, but he plays jazz. The dude can really solo, and really play. He's not just a drummer he's a musician.
that was on drum nation volume 3, but he doesn't play with blotted science. he personally played every instrument in that song. its called Swirling Patterns if you wanna look for it
BTW if your definition of metal is LOG then you don't know enough about metal to form a credible opinion.
LOG is alright don't get me wrong but I'm fucking sick of hearing that their like the epitome of metal.

I agree, no single band can be the bench-mark of modern day metal. I love Lamb of God, but I stuill wouldn't go as far as to say "they're the best band ever!" I'm pretty sure there are other great bands out there. It's all about an open mind about music, and from what I've seen of Roddy, he has a very open minded approach to the drums.
Hey look! It's that fruit DEE who talks about fisting guys' asses. lol. I really like what derek plays in this vid compared to the really fast type music in the other ones. This shows taste and musicianship, i dig it. This is the first time i've ever heard him talk too. He seems really damn smart. borderline eccentric too, but when you're a bloody brilliant musician that tends to happen. He gets my vote for Drumming Badass.
@karatemastr57 hell yeah man. I agree completely, i grew up with rock and metal but i also love jazz, and i don't see why anyone should cut themselves off from learning different styles of music. it can only improve your own style. that the difference between derek and alot of other death metal drummers, he goes out there and plays blues and jazz gig while a majority of the ones i've seen just stick to death metal, which IMO can get very monotonous with all the constant blasting.
i was there, trust me there was plenty of blasting. but he was also trying to show that he can play more than just death metal because ALOT of people make that false assumption.
Hopefully this will sound like a different question as opposed to "How can I play freehand blasts at 300bpm for 12 minutes" etc. But I bought this DVD and the drums/cymbals sound amazing!
Obviously part of that is down to the companies that you use but I was curious if you knew what mics they used to record your performance?
Great job though! Will be buying Blast Beats Evolved very soon.
I've done about 4 hours worth of practice daily, but never 8! Then again, some people can get good fast doing only like 2 hours a day, it just depends on the individual and what they are starting with. Some people learn faster than others. All that's needed is a passion for your craft, which involves patience, discipline, and an open mind! Enjoy those grueling practice sessions, they will pay off. Wouldn't you rather take your time with something you love?
1) They probably don't have as much as responsibility as we have or have to deal complex problems like we do, so they don't get stressed badly = they produce good music.
If you don't have a good-free habitat, you can't produce good music (good = fun 2 listen, "chilled out music" in this case)
2) Their JOB is jamming on drums, so they can work out everyday and I believe it's much more than 2 hours.
To get to that position they too had to deal with stresses of daily lives - they are human too, but they had the natural talent and dedication to devote their lives to it.
And they actually practise all day every day as best they can, up to and above 8 hours.
ACMetan: You know I read an interview with BLIND GUARDIAN the other day and they said that for the the recording of the first album they needed to work 8 hours a day, then travel long way to the studio, work there for the night, the next morning back to work, and so on. Non stop for few weeks.
Do you call that no problems, no stress?
No one is a huge star from the beginning (well except few cases, but Derek is definatelly not one of them). Everyone start somewhere and somehow.
OK what you're saying is related with their tiredness, not stress, there isn't much ambiguity or anything to be panic about. Plus a trip with your band would be fun instead of being a problem or cause stress.... Additionally, I would LOVE to play drums 8 hours a day and probably like they do, they wouldn't call it a "work". While they're doing that they must be having fun. Otherwise music wouldn't sound good or fun to listen, would it?(actually I don't like blind guardian : p )
ACMetan: Dude, when I said 8 hours of work a day, I didn't mean band related work - I meant a job. Normal, regular people job. And dude, trust me, if you know, that you're really tired, that even on 15 takes you just cannot nail something, every other take costs you money and in few hours you need to travel back to work. Dude, that's stress like all hell!
Only exceptions are people like Tony Royster, who were born into musical family. But all other need to work extremely hard and sacrifice a lot
: ) my bad, but Mr.Roddy's family are all musicians (although he's the only drummer in the family) but from what I remember from his interview including his uncle is a musician, so unlike them, he is kind of lucky to have such a support. As for the 8 hours of work, I bet they are satisfied with what they are doing but yea, tough thing to have such busy lives. Their retirement will be a mess : p
amazing drummer, with amazing attitude. No shortcuts! thats good news when u got tons of motivation ;) and guys this aint about core and metal so quit it lol its about derek and drums christ
I know some kids who are stupid enough to assume all DM is about Satan.
A band like Slipknot has it's controversy among metalheads but at least a band like that sends potential metalheads in the right direction.I also can't stand when core bands tour with bands like Slayer.I shouldn't have to sit through 3 lousy bands just to see the band I wanted to see, then when a core kid hits me in the face because he's "dancing" while im waiting IT'S FUCKIN WAR!
these days metal has so many sub-genres its hard to determine what fits in. if you want to be strict about it then anything other than judas priest / iron maiden like bands arent metal. Hardcore is really as different to those bands as death metal is.
Core is a bastard child of Punk and Metal and it has been disowned by both parents.
I hate core because when I ask people nowadays if they like metal I have to worry about them saying shit like Whitechapel and JFAC and August burns red ect....
That SHIT isn't metal!
It's fucking core!
THERE'S A DIFFERENCE!
DRAW THE DISTINCTION!
Call me a purist but as far as I'm concerned METAL and CORE are 2 TOTALLY DIFFERENT THINGS WITH 2 TOTALLY DIFFERENT KINDS OF FANS!
im pretty sure you would classify those bands under 'metal' whatever that is these days. When we say 'CORE' isnt metal i think we should stick with actual 'HARDCORE!!!' of course hardcore isnt metal, its hardcore, but bands like whitechapel are DeathCore and with harsh vocals and blast beats i think we can put them in the almost too vast genre of metal.
wtf is wrong with those bands their metal just like lamb of god is metal just in their own way i happen to like all those bands plus a lot of completely different types of metal its called personal taste and if u don't like it then dont fuckin listen to them its as simple as that
I've just recently gotten into this dude after buying his evolution of blast beats book... wasn't expecting to see this at the modern drummer event after listening to all of his black metal stuff, surprised and impressed.
im learn to play double pedal, im just hurtin my self everyday, even when im watchin tv i take the beater out ov my dw 5000 single an sitin there practising swivel for hours, an when go to stand up nearly collapse lol!
it does take years ov muscle memory so im startin now :p
You're damn right! I grew up on None so Vile and Blasphemy made Flesh.
To see them revert to that shit is inexcusable.
They need LORD WORM back!
Metalheads hate core because people associate US with THEM and we HATE THAT.
As far as I'm concerned(and many others) CORE and METAL are 2 different genres completely.
I don't hate core because of someone else's opinion, I just think it's bad music with little assholes for fans that think JFAC is the end all and be all of music.
Well you picked a damn good drummer to be like man. Derek is great to watch. I know if you are a beginning drummer, then you may watch Derek and be like " Damn, how am I ever gonna be that damn good?" Thats what I was like when I started drumming and I watched drummers like Derek, but just keep watching and practicing man, you'll get there. Two other great drummers to watch if you like Derek is George Kollias and Flo Mounier.
Yea, I know what you mean about hating core, but the way I am is that I don't necessarily like the kind of music that a drummer plays but I will still have mad respect for the drummer. For example, some of the best drummers I've seen play jazz. I hate jazz, but some of my idol drummers are actually jazz drummers. So I don't have to like the music. Its the drummers skill that I pay attention to when I am watching drummers.
Yea man, I know what you mean. Yea I would lose respect too. But there could also be something going on there that we don't know about. Who knows, I know where your coming from though. Oh btw, I have a drum solo on here. Its nothing special. I'm really still a beginner myself. I think I had been drumming for 2 years when I put it up. I was really just messing around and anxious to get a vid. up on youtube. Anyway, if you wanna watch it, just type in si jones drum solo. Let me know what you think
I'm a guitarist, not a drummer but I certainly can sympathize with you guy about wishing to play stuff like ultra fast blast beats and double bass stuff. I mean, playing guitar is hard, and it takes a hell of a lot of practice to play stuff like death metal and thrash, but my hat's off to you guys. At least I don't have to worry about pulling tendons in my arms and legs while practicing.

Core kids grow up arrogant and disrespectful.
Squint22 2 years ago 4
these days metal has so many sub-genres its hard to determine what fits in. if you want to be strict about it then anything other than judas priest / iron maiden like bands arent metal. Hardcore is really as different to those bands as death metal is.
screwis101 2 years ago
Anything with the suffix CORE is CORE to me.
I don't even have to know it's core.
Someone could show me a random core band and just by listening to those lousy typical core vocals and chugga chugga riffs I can determine it's core.
Core kids are also arrogant and disrespectful.
Some of them are in it just for the scene and some have the nerve to HxC dance in our pits!
BAD BAD IDEA.
These kids claim to know everything about metal and they don't even know what Obituary is.
It's a disgrace.
Squint22 2 years ago
Squint22 2 years ago
im pretty sure you would classify those bands under 'metal' whatever that is these days. When we say 'CORE' isnt metal i think we should stick with actual 'HARDCORE!!!' of course hardcore isnt metal, its hardcore, but bands like whitechapel are DeathCore and with harsh vocals and blast beats i think we can put them in the almost too vast genre of metal.
screwis101 2 years ago
wtf is wrong with those bands their metal just like lamb of god is metal just in their own way i happen to like all those bands plus a lot of completely different types of metal its called personal taste and if u don't like it then dont fuckin listen to them its as simple as that

I've just recently gotten into this dude after buying his evolution of blast beats book... wasn't expecting to see this at the modern drummer event after listening to all of his black metal stuff, surprised and impressed.

Axis are a trend you can play with any pedal
cristian2001 2 years ago 5
yes i know, but they are reaally nice, ive used them, they feel way better than any other pedals i have used :) and longboards really do help.

I never said that man. The Demon Drive came out hardly a year ago. The price is gonna drop, like anything else that was ever sold.

punkrockdrummer1990 2 years ago 2
I know I would.
Tardy brothers would NEVER play core.
Those 2 can fucking rip it up but if for some ridiculous reason they turned core........
I would like fucking disown them.
It's no secret that metalheads hate core.........
To turn core when we all know that..........
It's a fucking insult.
Like I am all for experimentation but for a band like CRYPTOPSY to play core is nothing short of musical degradation........
Flo was a FOUNDING MEMBER, I lost ALOT of respect for the guy.......
Squint22 2 years ago
hiya plz explain what core is, uno
punkrockdrummer1990 2 years ago
hardCORE, or in cryptopsys case, deathCORE. just genres.
screwis101 2 years ago
why do people say its bad then?
punkrockdrummer1990 2 years ago
its just a common thing for metalheads to hate hardcore, i dont know why. half of them are probably just following someone else.
but it this case, it does seem like a significant change, and as cryptopsy was really as DM as they come, they probably let a lot of fans down.
screwis101 2 years ago
You're damn right! I grew up on None so Vile and Blasphemy made Flesh.
To see them revert to that shit is inexcusable.
They need LORD WORM back!
Metalheads hate core because people associate US with THEM and we HATE THAT.
As far as I'm concerned(and many others) CORE and METAL are 2 different genres completely.
I don't hate core because of someone else's opinion, I just think it's bad music with little assholes for fans that think JFAC is the end all and be all of music.
Squint22 2 years ago
Get over it, faggot.

i didn't know Weird AL played drums. LOL
TannerCrawfordSHIZ 2 years ago
I aspire to be like him.
I am just starting out, haven't even had my set a year but I'm tryin!
Derek is very humble and wise when it comes to drums.
Also very well rounded.
A very good drum idol.
Nothing against Barker and Jordinson but Roddy is much better player and a better teacher to boot!
Squint22 2 years ago 5
Well you picked a damn good drummer to be like man. Derek is great to watch. I know if you are a beginning drummer, then you may watch Derek and be like " Damn, how am I ever gonna be that damn good?" Thats what I was like when I started drumming and I watched drummers like Derek, but just keep watching and practicing man, you'll get there. Two other great drummers to watch if you like Derek is George Kollias and Flo Mounier.
silasjones04 2 years ago
Yeah Kollias is the shit.
Nile's new album is fucking top notch.
Flo is a pretty good drummer too but to be honest I lost a lot of respect for him once he started playing core.
Call me a purist......I HATE CORE!
Also got to pay homage to greats like Gene Hoglin, Dave Lombardo, Neil Peart, Vitek ect...
I gotta start listening to more jazz drummers and shit.
Jazz drums are sick and adds variety.
Squint22 2 years ago
Yea, I know what you mean about hating core, but the way I am is that I don't necessarily like the kind of music that a drummer plays but I will still have mad respect for the drummer. For example, some of the best drummers I've seen play jazz. I hate jazz, but some of my idol drummers are actually jazz drummers. So I don't have to like the music. Its the drummers skill that I pay attention to when I am watching drummers.
silasjones04 2 years ago
Yeah I am usually the same way.
Even if I don't like the music if the musician has a good deal of skill and talent then they are worthy of respect.
Don't get me wrong Flo is a good drummer but to me after being with Cryptopsy for all that time to end up playing core....
To me, It's like he purposely betrayed all of the old Cyrptopsy fans that made them so successful in the first place.
It would be like if Obituary starting playing core.
Wouldn't you lose ALOT of respect for the guys in the band?
Squint22 2 years ago
Yea man, I know what you mean. Yea I would lose respect too. But there could also be something going on there that we don't know about. Who knows, I know where your coming from though. Oh btw, I have a drum solo on here. Its nothing special. I'm really still a beginner myself. I think I had been drumming for 2 years when I put it up. I was really just messing around and anxious to get a vid. up on youtube. Anyway, if you wanna watch it, just type in si jones drum solo. Let me know what you think
silasjones04 2 years ago
If you're a begging drummer, and your main idol is Derek Roddy. You are well on your way to success

Derek Rody is a really all-around drummer.
UgE 2 years ago
Everything this man says = pure wisdom.
In my opinion this is the drummer with the best approach, with the best advices for young ones and with the best attitude.
If someone asked me "Which drummer do you think is the wisest?" Without thinking for a second, I'd say Derek Roddy.
You don't have to love what he plays, but every drummer should listen to what he says and teaches and think about it.
