They 'were' fast hah. These were outpeformed by mustangs. Sometimes it came down to the drivers (manual) most of the time they couldn't keep up. The G92 optioned 3rd gen's could Maybe keep up. But the LG4, L69, and all the other V8 optioned maro's were slow. I'm not a Ford fan boy, nor am I a Ford guy at all... these maro's just didn't have the power to get em goin. But goddamn they had/have killer looks.

the car is an 89.. 1990 had no MAF they had a MAP tpi system and you can see the maf when he pops the hood and this car doesnt have an airbag.. all 1990 have air bag steering wheel and different gauges

@jayguy173 Stock, after 11 years, and 100k miles, mine ran 14.6 at IRP with 2.77 gears.  High 15's would be bad for the 305 tpi's. The 305 TBi s would probably run that (if they were lucky)

@jayguy173 I swapped the Borg Warner rearend with 2.77 to an '88 year with 3.23 gears and ran 14.2s with no other mods to the car. Gas mileage was still really good. I then swapped to 3.73 gears but this was after stroking the motor, so I am not sure what kind of improvements that swap made

Great car though, the 350 irocs were awsome, i wish they were available with 5-speed but still, 240 or so horsepower, kinda yawn, but the car really shines with the 370+ torque, awsome power from a time period where 200hp/tq was considered performance material ;-)

the 5.7 did not get a manual trans option because the transmission was rated to handle only 300ftlbs of tor. and the 5.7 was said to have 345ftlbs of tor. which in turn means it would destroy the trans. GM would warrent a car if they knew for sure it couldnt handle it. in 89 the 5.7 350 was rated at 235hp 335ftlbs of tor. and if you had the dual cat option 245hp and 345ftlbs of tor. enjoy.

that,s right the manual was only available with the 305 engine. I had a 89 5.7 and within 3k miles I could see cracks forming across the roof from the rear corners of the T top at the center bar running to the hatch back. a 5.7 with a manual would put too much torque on the body. I had a buddy with a swapped in manual but he also had a salvage yard non T top roof added to the car to stiffen it up.

I remember you couldn't get a manual trani on these with the 5.7L. It was supposedly because the 5.7L was "too strong" and would blow the rear ends, but I think it might have been a marketing thing, or even an insurance or gov. reg issue...or even a manufacturing cost-cutting issue...

Anyway, they were a car for their time for sure.
