Bette Midler was better polished for film, Patti Lupone is better suited for theater. Listen to her pant and breath. Bette is simply a cleaner and well rounded performer. Its literally technical not mere opinion.
Just listen to Allison England Sing this. Go to her Youtube clip of this song. That is singing and acting Nobody can touch her. Patti is always doing her "club act" . Its not acting.. Tight throat.. Horrible Technique.. Out of tune on all the high notes.. Someone tell this woman to quit masterbating this role on stage.. Its always all about Patti, and not about who Mama rose is..
It's funny, I've seen several renditions of this magnificent musical, the first with Angela Lansbury, who was outstanding, Tyne Daley who was very good, but sadly and surprisingly, I was extremely dissapointed with Patti Lupone, I was not impressed with her version of Mama Rose. The orchestra however was top notch. Unfortunately, I was too young and missed out when Ethel Merman originated this character, what a darn shame.
@degrassicub : You must still be growing pubes, which is why you don't really know any better. Patti Lupone is a very good talent but she just didn't have what it takes to pull off the forceful Mama Rose. Everyone in the theatre was surprised. Maybe her performance faltered because of a foot injury which caused her to wear isotones throught the show. The Orchestra was perhaps the best of all aside from the my first viewing of this legendary musical.
ok, I've done a lot of research on this, and merman gets the win for sheer guts and determination. I'm partial to Bette though, people have talked a lot of shit, but as an actress she's one of the great mama's, her voice isn't perfect, but wasn't that the point? Bernadette's voice was amazing for the role as well, and IM so torn about lupone, in other things, wow, as mama, I don't know...
@LovettLove94 Forget Louise's age. Laura Benanti was totally miscast because Louise must NEVER be a good singer. If she had any real talent, then Mama Rose is a real witch for focusing on June. The story also repeatedly says how untalented Louise is so Benanti made no sense. LuPone can give you a headache sometimes with these excesses. But her acting was DIVINE!!!
That is a scary song when sung right. Love Patti's version, though I have to say that seeing Bette Midler perform that role on TV many years ago made my hair stand on end.
Facebook has a group for a petition to get Patti's gypsy on pbs great performances, so if you have facebook, join the group, that way we can enjoy this revival for a long time
Patti's voice takes some getting used to, but she has a great pitch and, once you get past the sound, she's really likeable. This has become one of my favorite songs.
My favorite actress from the revival is Laura Benati, though. ^^ Just sayin'.
Is it just me or does it feel like you know Patti? She's one of those actors that I just feel like I know, like I am friends with her. She has that talent
Yeah, I know what you mean. I saw this last weekend on Broadway and it was amazing by the way, and the whole time I wondering where I knew her from. It was like I have met her before or something. It was really weird.
LuPone, Landsbury, Merman and the few others like them... they are stage stars... in their presence they can grab you, hold you... make you laugh, cry... love them, hate them... they make you feel something deep down...
I saw LuPone's Mama, the performance just before she won her Tony....... EXTRAORDINARY!... the most incredible performance that I have ever seen on stage.
When you pre-order the Cast Recording from the Theatre (will be released August 25th I think), you get a 5-track sampler: Some People, Everything's Coming Up Roses, If Mama Was Married, Together Whereever we go, & Rose's Turn.
I STILL get chills when I hear Patti sing this song and Rose's Turn (and I've even seen the show 3 times already). Her performance just floors me. There are certain notes she hits/words that she delivers that stop me dead in my tracks and without a doubt I always say: "OH. MY. GOD." when I hear them. Truly amazing.
I think her performance in City Center was more powerful than the actual Broadway Revival. Eighter way, I love Patti and I already saw her in Gypsy 6 times and more will come.
Sondheim admits to creating Rose in the image of his own mad mother. Rose's Turn is the cry, the cri de coeur if you will, of a madwomans descent into her own madness.
I personally think that merman wasnt too great an actress (so Arthur laurents said) but the intentions of gypsy was to make rose human. Not all of the roses managed to do that. (Bernadette= barf) Angela was a little too sweet but sometimes sweet is just what you want. I dont think lupones version was particulary cold harted, she just began to have a breakdown toward the end. This breakdown ends with roses turn. I think that all the roses who make her seem human are great.
Angela certainly was much sweeter, and Bernadette was very meek, especially compared to Patti, she really goes for it at the climax at the end, and what a final note - WOW!!
well.. in my view, lupone's interpretation of Rose is less like those that are being portrayed by the past few roses, which is to make her more humane.
i feel that lupone's more brassy and cold hearted portrayal is one that is so much more sticking to the original intention of 'Gypsy'
Interesting view of Lupone's version. I always saw the song as being more loving like Lansbury's version seems to be. In fact, the first time I had ever heard the song, I got the idea Lansbury was singing to a sickly child.
interesting. i see it as a last selfish ply of desperation from Mamma Rose for the fame SHE always wanted. Like she knows they are done and washed up, but is simply denying...atleast that is how i felt during PAtti's Performance
just seeing her performance on the Tony's (which was just pure love and brilliance), I agree with you, SpeakOut26. I love Patti's interpretation. I saw the movie with Roz Russell a long time ago, so I can't remember what I thought of it, but I'm pretty sure that's the way I always saw it: Mama Rose's selfish desperation.
If you mean me, I'd never seen the play or heard details about it. So when I did finally hear it, I automatically made a video in my head to match; that scenario of a sick child being sung to in order to raise her spirits was it.
i hope she sings this or rose's turn at the tony's. she probably won't though. considering Laurar and Boyd were also nominated they may just do Together, which would be good too. I CAN'T BELIEVE I SAW THEM LIVE!
I know patti was nominated and so were laura and boid but if Laura and boid dont win thats more understandable but if patti doesnt win that tony there must be a mistake because patti has the voice i always imagined those greek muses have... like a godess. YAY FOR PATTI!
It's even better (if you can imagine that) when you see her do it live on stage! I had the honor of meeting Miss LuPone at the stage door last night for my second time seeing the show - gracious and beautiful and fantastic was she. I smell another Tony...
