When there's a big one, a contractor comes in, sees if it's any good at riding, and if it's good, they keep it rodeoing for a while. The flank strap doesn't hurt them (it tickles them, and it enhances the bucking), the bull is trained to buck and it loves what it does, and the lead rope doesn't choke it or anything, it's completely humane.
