when the eletric bass was invented by Leo Fender everyone used picks, It was not untill double bass players made the switch to vertical bass that fingers became the 'right' way. I play with my fingers because I prefare the sound.
I don't think anyone here gives a crap about your opinion about pick or fingers.. seriously, I have seen enough of this crap. Seriously, why the fuck do you care? You don't know him, he's not the bassist in a your band, and it sounds awesome. So why the fuck does it matter? I use my fingers and pick. Doesn't matter about which one to use, as long as it sounds good!
Dude, I was just saying that I use my fingers more often than pick. but i do use both. and i never said it didn't sound good. It sounds fucking amazing.
Sorry it's just that I've seen this argument in the comments of this video for the last two years, and it's kind of ridiculous. Sorry if I kind of flipped out it just, god, it's not a big deal, like I said earlier, whatever sounds best should be used, hell, even if it's slapping a non-slap song, as long as it sounds like the real thing.
I agree with the "slapping on a non-slap song" thing. I like slapping when playing killing in the name of. makes it sounds cool. don't know if he does slap on that song but it sounds really good that way.
ehm...can u tell me how much time u play bass?and generaly guitar...i play bass two months now and for me was a bit difficult but i learned it cuz i saw the technique from u:)
I haven't watched/commented on this video in like a year lol. And people are STILL complaining about Fingers vs. Pick. IT'S BEEN LIKE A YEAR SINCE I'VE BEEN HERE. WTF is wrong with you people. Stop fucking arguing about a retarded "problem" as you call it. It's whatever sounds best for the situation. Leave it at that! Seriously, god dammit... a year...
I want a honest answer. why is everyone anti pick for bass? i want good reasons, not "because, err, they the guitar and stuff" which is what i get everywhere else. i want an intelligent reason why people dont like it when other people use a pick for bass.
well, for some songs, i agree. But what about songs like my friend of Misery, and other post Cliff songs? they use the extra punch a pick delivers to add to the song.
i use both, but i think the reason people don't like picks is because finger bass gives you a fat sound, and people don't like the treble the pick add, me i think it sounds fine
If you would stop staring at his picking hand for a second, you'll see that he's an amazing bass player. Using a pick does not mean you're less talented, it's simply a preference, and each style offers up a distinctive sound.
Picks aren't that easy to use, i play with my fingers because I find it easier and i prefer the tone, playing with a pick is louder and gives you more treble, which is why a lot of rock/metal bassists use picks...
i dont use pick either, cliff burton or rob trujillo (dont count jason he is an arse) both do not use picks so it sounds right when playing metllica without a pick, i prefer heavey bass sounds rather than treble,
i agree. great cover though, just loose the pick. (i dont have any finger print left on my index, middle, aand ring fingers on both hands from playing)
As for the pick/finger debate, it's pointless. People like different techniques. Stop trying to act macho by saying "HAHAHA, only pussies use picks". It's pathetic.
And picks are not for little girls... Picks and Fingers give the bass two different sounds, pick sounds better on certain songs, fingers better on others ... seriously
cliff did use picks.he did to keep up with the accuracy of the speed of the guitar explaing why the bass is fast at times in songs like one and master odf puppets
cliff did not use a pick, metallica chose rob to be in the band because he used fingers and it reminded them of cliff thats not the only reason though, they also chose him because of his awesome posture and because he didnt seem to struggle with any of the songs
shut up man...WHAT IS BAD ABOUT USING PICKS???It's just a playing method.Maybe you feel better using your fingers and some people feel better using picks...I mean, what's the difference? If you're good you can do it with any method.Remember old Metallica?Newsted used picks. And I don't think any of you can say that what they did when Jason was with them was low quality music...everything is about how you feel better...especially on bass...and if you argue about that you know nothing about bass...
I am a bassist and I play with my fingers as well... but only because I like it more. There's more than one style. There are songs so fast that I HAVE to use a pick, but I like the sound of my fingers more than my pick. So I use my fingers. This person likes the sound of a pick more than his fingers, so he uses a pick. That's all there is too it.
I agree; I have played bass for ten years and I have played all types of music like slap, blues, funk, metal, etc. It does not matter if you use your fingers or a pick as long as you get to rock out WHO CARES. Lets not forget there have been some bad ass bass players that have used picks...like ummm JASON NEWSTED. He used a pick and could play the same thing Cliff did with his fingers.
playing with either gives a different sound, I prefer playing with my fingers, cause I like the sound better, and it's more of a challenge then playing with a pick, considering I've been playing guitar for a long while. I like to challenge myself when it comes to music. But DAMN good job on the cover, pick or no pick. Fucking Bad Ass Song, RIP CLIFF BURTON.
Anybody that knows anything about bass knows that it doesn't make you a better bassist if you finger pick. To completely discount someone for using a pick is to prove one's ignorance.
Ive been playing speed thrash metal for 24 years and any ignorant person would bitch because of someone using a pick for bass but rather you use one are not but its not how you play its about how much rhythm and how precise you are on your notes this young man has this song nailed, and thats all that matters I know CLiff use his fingers trust me Ive seen him play Live.
tell,me you idiots, what's bad with playing with a pick?newsted used a pick, and think of all the great stuff he did with metallica...you just have nothing interesting to say,so you just try to convince yourselves that using a pick is for idiots.but you are the idiots.when you'll sing in a band like metallica and come with all that great stuff, then you maybe have the right to say that.go fuck yourselves under the shower... btw,I use a pick too:D
i use both. i find it myself pluckin when i go from string to string like with this song. When i play faster stuff i tend to pick. i like plucking more but its good for bassists to know how to do both.
do you know how to play with your little finger if you got short fingers ..it is difficult to play the first 4 riffs verry fast quzz my little finger is to slow
[is it true that you can train the little finger to got more power in it?]
i'm having a hard playing the lines in 0:32 because of the open E in the beginning of every line. then i realize that playing with pick will make it easier for me to play that part. but still i dont use a pick :D cliff burton must have had perfect hands coordination and lightning finger speed to be able to do those basslines.
On the contrary, I find it easy to do that riff with fingers and can't do without a pick. But i'm useless with picks. If it helps at all I play: E with first finger, hammer on f, B with second finger, E with second finger, hammer F, C with first, E with first, hammer f, Csharp with second and so on.
that is what i do exactly, its just that my fingers dont coordinate well in those parts. but i still prefer doing fingerstyle. i am also useless with the pick :s
You know I think a good arguement for bassist using picks are "what about those guitarists who play with fingers?" Are they "bad?" (You know Led Zeppelin played "Stairway to Heaven" with fingers).
Pick away maidenslayer, you're an awesome bassist.
well each person has their oppinion but i still find jason better, cliff was very talented but i think jason was more suited to metallica. although everyone gets overated if they die young eg. hendrix
whoa your not that good man i found it difficult to accept anyone to be outstounded that you can play it with a pick did it take you a long time to neglect your instrument. btw to the people that ask, what is wrong with using a pick the answer is everything, and to the people that kid themselves thinking it gives them a specific sound, dile up the treble and down the bass and refine your technique a little more you should get a better sound.
No, they just have it really really low compared to guitar. You see, the more you turn down the bass guitar in a mix, the clearer the kick drum will be. And metalheads like listening to double kicking, so you can see why bass usually doesn't becomes lowest priority.
ive been playing for about a month with no lessons and ive been trying 2 learn to play this song i have trouble on the second riff on the bass i can only pluck by using my thumb to pluck the e string and index for the a any one got any tips onhow to practice that or is playing it over and over my best option
anything is possible if you try. i learned the second riff on the bass in about 2 minutes(not perfect) and ive been playing for about a month now. no lessons
I USE ME FINGERS TO PLAY THE BASS. NICE COVER THOUGH.

Is it true some metal bands mix the bass out of the song?
HGS9669 3 years ago
No, they just have it really really low compared to guitar. You see, the more you turn down the bass guitar in a mix, the clearer the kick drum will be. And metalheads like listening to double kicking, so you can see why bass usually doesn't becomes lowest priority.

I think this is one of the hardest songs to play on bass (Metallica). The form is easy, but too fast (at least for me).
