  • CROTCHET!

  • why is there so much finger motion?

most really advanced players keep their fingers closer.

  • wow he has airy tone

  • @venskus2009 I thought so too!!!

  • @Thejessi403 That's air leaking out of the side of his mouth. When the listener is far away, you can't hear that, so it sounds perfectly fine. But since the camera is so close, it's really obvious.

  • Bof bof !!! ....... pas top le son

  • wow an asian with a british accent :o really going for the non racism eh?

  • i ike it it helps me with a competetion call all-state cause we play something similar

  • This masterclass is about a youtube-based orchestra competition 1-2 years ago.The piece was Tan Dun's:''Heroic'' symphony or something like that

  • give us some tips then for christs sake...a masterclass is not a series of excerpts surely...its alright but i think it misses the point

  • Amazing !!!

  • such a nice toneeee !!

    and love his accent ;)

  • @4:07

  • what a puny sound, that piano would NEVER carry over a full orchestra, how is this guy in the LSO?

  • it seems as though when he is playing loud air is escaping i have that happen to me too and when i tongue fast as well does anyone know why and if so how can u fix it

  • I play a Bb clarinet too, but I really want to play a bass clarinet. I hate playing the high notes (the first B with the register key and up) and love the low ones, so I wanna try a bass clarinet :D

  • I wish I was that good! Clarinets rock!

  • look at how his teeth are shaped to the clarinet, and the tooth marks on the mouthpiece...my front tooth has changed position because the opposing lower tooth is wonky

  • I play the clarinet and is so much fun!Except for sticatto!Wait, sorry spelt it wrong,i think??!!!LOL

  • that's a buffet prestige: Festival, RC Prestige, or R13 Prestige

  • che brutto suono nn mi piace

  • um why is there a balinese gamelan in the background?

  • That guys Clarinet barrel is pretty long and narrow no?

  • @resi45

Looks like a ringless Backun Barrel, more than likely Grenadilla.

  • the clarinet rules forever

  • I wish I could get that sound on my clarinet!

  • How is he using altissimo fingerings on the throat register?

  • It works by not using the thumb. If you put fingers 2 and 3 down when playing A and A#, you get a nicer sound.

  • desde 1:40 en adelante para mi martilla mucho las notas.

  • Does anyone know what kind of clarinet this guy is playing?

  • @CrazyChicken1990

    he plays an Gerold Clarinet

  • i thinfk gerold is german system. this looks like a buffet rc or r13 prestige

  • Comment removed

  • This isn't really helpful if you aren't actually learning the piece, or at least have it front of you.

You guys should check out Maxim Vengerov master classes because he's actually doing it with students.

  • This is not about comparing orchestras or clarinetists. It is about a top-notch clarinetist (someone who has made it into the LSO) and is willing to post these free lessons when he could choose not to bother. He could only teach when he is paid for his expertise and time. I have decided to subscribe to this channel and am thankful for what is offered here.

  • i wasn't impressed at first, but now that i've listened to the whole video-- definitely impressed.

  • need many more years of practice

  • great, thanks! :)

  • can you actually teach all the scales 2 octives while showing the fingering to them in slow motion then full speed

  • I can't get the high note out at 1:08 any advise?

  • notes like those took me a while, but you should just practice.

--I also heard that harder/stronger reeds make high notes easier..

  • Hey I play clarinet and maybe if you tighten up your ambiture and use faster and stronger air you might get them out easier. How many years have u played

  • LOLLLLL, go pass 7th grade

  • lol a chinese guy with british accent

  • why do you wiggle around when u play?

  • Holy crap,

that be some good clarinet playing thar.

  • Are you mocking southern accents?

  • WingedTigerGuy: No. In the internets, spelling is done deliberately done like that. Its hard to explain if you don't accept it as it is.

e.g. "i c wut u did thar" .. "yarly" .. Mainly the language is often derived from the flavor of the month internet meme. Basically one thing in the internet, don't be quick to be so judgmental, and don't take it seriously or personally, its the internet. For fucks sakes, idiot.

Ha! just testing you. (or am I? c wut i did thar?)

  • must you use such inappropriate language??

  • Probably not, but I gather you missed my point entirely, and probably did not realise that I was predominantly not being offensive and/or insulting. (Though I was a tad.) LIke I said, don't take the internet personally bud.

  • it doesn't matter which instrument you play it matter who is playing it

  • don't ilke the sound of french system clarinets. they're too breathy and not clear enough. I know it's the old discussion... :-)

  • Holy, EXELLENT PLAYING. <3

one thing, were your chops tired/is your reed going?

because at some parts (mostly the G and A's without the octave key) seemed a little airy at times.

but your fantastic, and I honestly wish I could sound like you!

  • You're disgusting. Burn in hell, racist scum.

  • wow.....

  • buffet crampon elite

  • where can i find that?

  • it was limited edition

  • fried rice?

  • what kind of clarinet is Chi-Yu Mo using in this video.

  • buffet crampon elite

  • lol. it seems that many clarinet players (myself included) move and sway around while playing. I guess its sort of an "in the zone" reaction. Extremely excellent playing though. I hope I can reach this level of expertise some day. until then, I guess I'll just practice a lot!

  • very nice!

  • ergh! he didnt end on "I" in the trill during the Beethoven Clarinet solo. ERGH! oh well. very nice!

  • I have a question, not meant to undermine your talent, skill and knowledge... it has more to do with technique: Would you say your hand position is erratic? You move far away from the keys, thus creating needless movement and demanding more energy. What are your views on maintaining a proper guide position?

  • I don't think so! Get real!!

  • then why does he have the lso seat then?

  • Well, prove it then...

  • i love this dude his mad good!! i wanna be just like him but his chinese and im korean...lolzzz i wanna no what kind of cliarnet he have me have buffet

  • I love this guy. Whenever I watch the score part of the extra features on DVDs and they show the LSO, I always see this guy fucking around with the other clarinetists.

  • I'm sure I won't get in, but I'm so going to try it.

  • i play the clarinet!!! seriouslly! Im not very good. One of my best friends is better at fingering the notes and sightreading but I have a very beautifull tone quality!!! lol! we complement each other!! im such a nerd. lol!

  • I think I'm going to try this, even though I haven't "seriously" played since high school in the the early '80s. Not Carnegie Hall, though; there are so many who truly deserve a chance for that one! I think this is such a cool idea having an online colab orchestra with players from everywhere. Wow!

  • Regarding transposing the Mozart:

Either way, you could be right or you could be wrong. Transposing could be a no-no, or playing it as-is could be more of a no-no.

The big point here is that it's hard to say what could happen at such a big open audition. It could be that they will judge according to unusual standards to be more inclusive. It could also be that they'll use the very strictest criteria available just to cut through the sheer numbers of applicants.

    Either way, play well.

  • Haha, I didn't realize I'd be posting under my super-dorky alias. *struts his nerdy stuff*

  • I am wondering why the clarinet part is in B-flat. I would rather play the whole thing in the A clarinet which would make the piece very easy. If I do this I will be doing it in the A.

Regarding the transposing of the Mozart. If you transpose from A major to Bb major which is the standard transposition for the Mozart all of the notes stay the same. Nothing changes regarding notation.

  • is it just me, or is there absolutely no good place to breathe between bars 77 and 91? It looks impossible to physically play without the chair partner stagger breathing along with you.

  • This was a great video, and he's an amazing clarinetist!! I'd love to audition in for the youtube symph, it sounds interesting :). Wish I could; submission deadlines fall around my honor band concert, and I've been preparing for tanglewood :(...but I got some help on beethoven's pastorale! hooray!

I think its amazing that they are posting videos to assist one for the audition :) good luck to everyone auditioning!

  • So..who knows how many clarinets are being accepted? Because if it's just the standard 2 or 3, I'm not even wasting my time..

Although I will be interested in seeing who does make it..

  • ya 2 or 3 because its orchestra

  • i know! i wish there would be more wind instruments in the orchestra.

string instruments are so luck! they get like 25-50 people per instrument!!!

(it just shows that any 1 wind instrument can overpower 10s and 20 strings, and u can still hear them!

  • Ok, so if i wanted to play Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, Movement II, would it be alright if i played it on the Bb Clarinet, even though it's written for the A Clarinet? Seeing as i don't have an A Clarinet. This is the only place that i could really think to ask the question.

  • i have the same question as you...do you hav the score? i realli want it but i dun hav a clarinet in A...but if i transpose it would it be alright?

  • I would think that, because it's a solo, you are able to play however you want, because if you transpose the piece, there are a large amount of awkward fingering, as for me I'm deliberating on weather I should transpose it or not, because I would be wasting valuable praticing time.

  • I've played both the transposed and straight on that piece. I think the key's prettier when it's transposed, and the judges will know that the fingerings are awkward so if you make it sound good, it will be more impressive. I wanna audition real bad! But i don't know how it will conflict with school and spring break, as well as my orchestra rehersal.

  • do u have to be a pro b/c im good, but im not a pro.

  • I play the clarinet!

  • I would think that bouncing would distort your tone,

I know when I play my clarinet,

I kinda rock back in forth,

Usually if I really get into a piece,

Like Master Mo here I make little circles with my bell,

Or I sway back and forth,

But I wouldn't suggest bouncing lol

  • With a firm embouchure you can!

  • i tend to bounce i think cuz maybe it helps me better get into the rhythm or something, idk, it's one of those in-the-zone things

  • What a great masterclass! It's so neat to see these on youtube!

  • Man I really wish Tan Dun had written this for Clarinet in A instead of Bb... G and Eb are so much easier to play in than D and F#!

  • Oh yes, I had the same wish just a few minutes ago trying to play bars 79/80 on my german systhem... A clarinet would be a realy nice thing....

  • Aren't most German clarinet's systems very sligtly out of the typical western tonality? I know from many German recorded versions of mozart which is very hard to get in tune with on a B flat clarinet but easier with an A. Could this put you out of tune with the rest of the 'internet' orchestra?

  • That depends on the clarinet. I know a lot of clarinets (even very expensive ones) which do in fact have said problem, but that's not true for all clarinets. I bought mine AFTER checking the tuning of each tune. So no, there won't be a problem. (I've allready practiced pieces with recordings from both systhems and I never had a problem because of the tuning.)

  • This guy is amazing. I honestly thought that it would be impossible to play, but once you take a look at the sheet music, it doesn't seem all that difficult. ^_^

I'm the kind of person that likes to play in the lower register, but this song is far from that, so it's a bit out of my comfort zone. Otherwise, it's a very beautiful piece.

This guy must be amazing at Carnegie Hall.

Since I have recently played at Lincoln Center (Avery Fisher Hall) in NYC, I'm pretty excited about this.

  • lol, does anyone besides me, when playing clarinet, find themselves sort of bouncing in their chair to get the staccatos right?

  • Yes! I totally agree. Staccatos were never my area of expertise and I find it quite hard to sit still while trying to get them perfect. ^_~

  • Hmm well I played clarinet in high school but I am almost 27 now so goodness knows I haven't touched it much since then. I picked it up again last year but I haven't played since. This piece seems pretty easy. I bet I could play it. I might get a little tongue tied with all the staccato notes!

  • Why does he go into beethoven if it's not even one of the audition pieces?

  • Internet Symphony No. 1 "Eroica" makes reference to Beethoven's Third Symphony also called, "Eroica". If you want to audition for this project, you would be wise to listen the the Beethoven as preparation.

  • I think that Tech is refering to when he played an excerpt from Beethoven's 6th symphony, which(unfortunately) is not on the audition list.

  • I really wanna audition, but I feel like it would be a waste of time because I would get beat out by professionals (I'm a measly high school band student!)

what chance do I have of making it? and how many people do you think will be auditioning for clarinet anyway? :)

  • I felt the same way at first, but I'm going to audition, probably on the lower part as well. I'm hoping that maybe I can make it and live up to being fist chair.

I think that there will be a lot, but you've got to remember that they need a lot of clarinets in order to hear them too. :3

  • can someone tell me what measures start each movement?

  • I'm not so sure about his pitch and tone. It seems a little bit off to me. :S

  • I think the quality of youtube audio won't help... The first cresc did brighten the pitch though

  • airy undertone i think

  • i play the Clarinet :D

  • Man, this guy is....

  • very interesting. I'm an amateur musician (I major only in music theory), but it's very interesting following the direction of a professional player, with the score :) thanks!

  • we're playing .....about...this kinda a music in my 8th grade band...we're not exactly on point with anything....but we're kinda good lol..nothing like him lol..i get finger stupid lol

  • For your information, the LSO is better than "any major American symphony". Grammophones order: Koninklijk Concertgebouw Orkest (Amsterdam), Berliner Philharmoniker, Wiener Philharmoniker, London Symphony Orchestra, Chigaco Symphony Orchestra.

  • This is crazy, because the Chicago Symphony outdoes the LSO on many recordings, including many Mahler symphonies. I don't find the LSO to be the best orchestra in the world, nor do I find the Concertgebouw to be either. I do, however, find the BPO to be in a worthy position on that list.

  • Chicago,N.Y. Philharmonia,Concertgebouw,Berlin and Vienna go straight up to my top 5 orchestras with Concertgebouw first and Chicago second.

  • The New York Philharmonic is an on and off contender. Stanley Drucker, as good as he was, ruined my possible preference of the orchestra because of his constant and unnecessary vibrato (or at least the annoying tone he brought with it), and so did Phil Myers because of the same reason.

  • dude i guess hes from the orchestra...

  • in his defense there are a lot of amazing american clarinetist. Grammophones order is opinion not fact. London Symphony is very good probably better than most of the american symphonies, but who says all of it's players are better than say all of NYPO?

  • not auditioning, but as a B flat player for eight years, it is really cool to hear Mr. Chi-Yu Mo play at that level, especially with with his control of his dynamics.

  • god when he hit the high c i just got chills from his tone!

  • At first look at this music, I thought it was going to be insane. Then I watched the video, and realized that the tempo is quite slow.

Doable, yes. Only problem I would have would be at measure 50. Other than that, pretty simple.

  • me too, i was worried when i saw the music untill i heard the tempo!

  • Interesting video - when I was a clarinet major in college, I played these excerpts all of the time and was fortunate enough to perform all of these (except the new piece) in concert. On the Scheherazade 3rd movement excerpts, I could swear there is supposed to be an A on the scale descending from the high C (7:25). He seems to have skipped that note, but since he plays it the exact same way both times, perhaps it is my memory that is faulty.

  • Considering the room you're in, your tone is beautiful and to hear you live on stage would be amazing. Thank you for devoting your time to this short masterclass. I greatly look forward to the watching this project grow and see Tan Dun's music come to life!

  • You are clarinet god. Sorry if that sounds immature but it's true. I've only been playing for five years, six at the end of my senior year next year. I've come nowhere close to godliness like those in the symphony. I bow at your presence.

  • This may be a dumb question but i don't care. do you have to have both an A clarinet and a b-flat?

  • Well, it depends. If you're at a high school level, then probably not. If you're intending to major in music, then you would probably have to get one sometime during in college, just because so many professional level pieces use it.

  • okay thanks =)

  • Bb is used for beginners and elementary-middle-and most high school band work, but the purpose of A is because it makes for less finger confusion with accidentals and such in professional symphony orchestra's so it is recommended that one starts off on Bb then moves on to A once necessary.

  • what type of clarinet and reeds dose he use?

  • Can I join. I`m 12 and in a middle school band. I`ve marched in about 10 parades, and played is about 20 concerts. I`m also in 2 citywie bands. Am I too young??????

  • ya the age limit is 14 sry...

  • Dam so close i turn 14 in May :(

  • i'm 14!!! :D:D:D

  • lol cool i turn 15 in may ^^ wats your b-day

  • Great Vid, I don't think I'll be submitting an audition but I'm going to have a look at the music and maybe even dust off my old Clarinets. Thanks for inspiring and I shall follow the progress of this project.

  • where do you find the sheet music??

  • On the actual profile page. On the top where it says enter or something, press it and it will lead you to a drop down list of all of the available instruments, click whichever one you play and it will load an instructional video and the sheet music on an extractable adobe file. (:

  • thanks sooo much!! :)

  • oh, here's the english one! ^_^

  • Excellent

  • Runiteking1 !!! It's funny that ive found you here, Marshall. I'm gonna do this too :P

  • Yes... english :D
