  • omg dave i cnt believe you kept this from me you fagget lol

  • To play some sort of band song on xylophone is no big deal, my sister, whos 13 plays those song on xylophone with her teachers band in music school and there are other groups who does that so, is no big deal.

  • My percussion director down here in florida is the one playing bass marimba ^-^

    go Mr. North!

  • haha wow i just played this. so fun

  • this played wrong. it's not supposed to be straight 8ths.

  • @mptdrums It's supposed to be pretty straight, trust me, Bob Becker told me that, if you know who that is.

  • it sounds unclear because of the acoustics, not the speed. It sounds fine.

  • great if he's a freshman. i couldn't do any better.

  • i know a guy that played this as a freshman in highschool. hes insane.

  • damn is the tempo supposed to be that fast? i think if you took the tempo down a little bit it'll be alot clearer. just my opinion.

  • Nice...I hope the folks back in Northern Michigan here you play this! To the comment about swing...there is no swing in ragtime, but ragtime a precursor of jazz? Who says? Ragtime was to be played AS WRITTEN and there was NO IMPROVISATION! Doesn't sound like jazz, does it?

  • Shane, you are so awesome. :)

  • very nice. i attend central michigan, and i'm just starting some green rags. we just had bob becker come and play w/our perc ensemble, and he helped me out a bit... well, a LOT. lol.

  • DUDE there is no swing in this... It's written to be played straight. This doesn't have the Charleston swing or anything like it. Go look for more recordings the tune is Log Cabin Blues by George Hamilton Green. The arrangement is by Bob Becker.

  • Wow man...there's like no swing to this at all. Ragtime was the precursor of jazz. You're in college and you need to learn about feel man. Especially if you're a percussionist.

  • yeah ragtime is supposed to sound like the music in the old black and white Mickey Mouse cartoons

  • it sounds like it belongs on a fucked up version of a Mario game or something

  • holy F***

  • it ain't swingin' brother.

  • Great job.

  • Is it just me or does it look like 4 of the same person playing at once?

  • its just u

  • GREAT!! HAHAHA :D

  • pretty nice !!

  • i would kill to have this sheet music

  • nice...are they made of wood?

  • yes they are

  • nice sticking

  • Couple ryhthm errors too, but loved the middle arpeggios - very tasty

  • Wow, if only I could play like that. Great Job!

    Great performance, yay ! :)

  • what a silly instrument, its so awesome.

  • stop rushing!

  • This the second i've seen Once with the ringling brother's when they took out.Good job guy's

  • must say ive never seen a xylophone rag before and dunno bout all these unseen perfection freaks feeding you all that negativity, but man that was fkn intense! i didnt know this has such a big following lol! top effort man, sounded like the intermission from Monty Phython's Meaning of Life!

ps: the guy talkin bout wrong notes wants to get a life soonish =P

  • cool

  • why did you play it straight? just because the dotted eighth to a sixteenth rhythm (swing) isn't written directly on the music doesn't mean you have to play it straight. it's ragtime so it's meant to be at least a LITTLE bit swung. and maybe you should slow it down a little bit. speed doesn't equal quality in this case.

  • NOOOO! "ragged time" is Always straight. is was around at the turn of the century. "Swing" didn't take form until the 1930s. I will agree that speed doesn't equal quality.

  • Most rags are indeed intended to be played straight 8ths unless otherwise indicated. Rags with lots of dotted rhythms (which mostly appeared starting with the fox-trot craze in 1914) can have the rhythm played either swung (2:1 triplet or 3:2 quintuplet), or as-written (3:1 sixteenth), which some decry as "square" but can lend a nice crisp "snap" to the rhythms when done right.

  • Either kind of swinging is fine because vintage recordings indicate that both were about equally prevalent at the time. (but only apply swing when indicated by the dotted rhythms) Also, straight 8ths (or 16ths in 2/4) are very typical and ideally, except on downtempo ballad-style rags, should convey a groove similar to that of rock or latin american music.

  • why did you play it straight? just because the dotted eighth note to a sixteenth note (swing rhythm) isn't written doesn't mean that it's meant to be played that way. and, it could be taken a little slower to hit more right notes. speed doesn't equal quality.

  • hmm.. I lost interest when the soloist did during that piece =p

No point doing all the repeats if you're going to bore yourself - it doesnt send out a good vibe.

  • nicely done Shane...

    love,

    your favorite cuddle buddy, Nate

    aha...i just notice john behind you...he looks...thin(ouch)

  • dude, this interpretation was terrible and way too many wrong notes! where was the groove?!

  • wowee! thats really good! i passed my grade 8 percussion last month, i love ragtime - i think they were just made for the xylophone! Does anyone know where I can get recordings of this sort of thing? Thanks

  • Try the nexus ragtime concert recording. A bunch of Joe and George Green rags on that one, including Log Cabin.

  • I like your vid clip and I've rated it as awesome. Please check out my video clip of some very rare 1934 tobacco cards of old and ethnic musical instruments.

  • awesome!

  • Very nicely done.

aahh, i love George Hamilton Green's music. I've played The Ragtime Robin, rainbow ripples and cross corners before

  • its called LOG CABIN BLUES, peaople at our high school drumline played and its awesome!

nice to other people enjoy stuff like this

  • Awesome job! I played that exact song for solo & ensembles at my high school last spring. I messed the part in the last 30 seconds of this video up pretty badly.. It was really difficult! I had a piano accompaniment instead of other marimba players, though. Those are marimbas, right?

  • Talent worth having guys. Keep it up.

  • Some great George Hamilton Green stuff. Nicely done!
