just stating my oppinion here, but why on earth would you need an 8 string guitar. thats what bass is for? and if your that determined to get that low couldnt you just drop your tuning? oppinions?

@ryan4951 its very simple, at lower tunings, most especially to 8 string levels the strings become very loose which can be uncomfortable and unresponsive, the 8 string allows one to have the deep bass notes whilst maintaining normal string tension and it also ensures (generally) that the pickups will be setup to pick up the low notes without the muddiness you would get if you de-tuned a 6 or 7 string, it also allows the high end to remain very tight for soloing and you can get brutal low end...

@ryan4951 I Agree, the best 8th string usage is polyrhythmic, when you're just hitting the open F# or E at odd intervals with the bass drum or snare hits in mathematically complex music music like meshuggah and Animals as Leaders or even in simple meters but when your being all Dino Cazares about it with the power chords ALL the time it kind of loses its appeal...
