What's ages ago? :) Saw them both in 2001 and 2002 in Germany and they certainly didn't play encores then. Even been checking old setlists from 96 and 98 and there's never any encores listed :P Never been to a gig where James hasn't played an acoustic song and erm, I've seen them *cough* 25 times :P I hope he never skips that section either, it's one of my highlights of each gig! :))
@Karmacy972 Sorry, late reply cos I'm so busy work-wise atm and I actually had to do some research, haha. Haven't found proof so far that I was right about the encores apart from Manic Millennium obv, which was a totally different matter (but WHY do I remember being so disappointed about the encores then? Maybe I AM going insane. ;)) BUT they definitely didn't play acoustic songs at the German dates of the Greatest Hits tour in 2002, I swear and also double-checked the setlists.
@Karmacy972 My friend informed me they also skipped the acoustic section at their one-off German date in 2007! I couldn't make it to that one, didn't go to any European Manics dates after 2002 (apart from the odd festival), but it looks like they only played the acoustic section at the UK dates and decided to skip it when playing elsewhere. Phew. At least I'm not completely making things up, haha, that's a relief, an even bigger relief was that the acoustic section was back in Hamburg too!! :)
@MikeyClay Okay, I've checked as well... :P And while I did note that they played Faster acoustic in Berlin in 2002, Nicky was still onstage, so that probably doesn't count. ;) Cologne in 2007 (is that the one?) is a weird one cos it was just a TV gig (Rockpalast) - they only played one hour! No wonder they cut acoustic songs for that. Manic Millennium did NOT have any encores, it was just a 2 part gig... they played 8 songs after the 'break'! That would have been quite an encore section! :P
What do you mean, the acoustic song in the middle and no encores are back? There's always an acoustic song (even if James has a cold and Nicky has to do it ;)) and they never play encores... only exception was for Fidel so he would let them leave the country again, lol! Wish more bands structured their sets like this. :)
@Karmacy972 Well, the Manics DID play encores when they last toured Europe (granted, that was ages ago) and I've been to a few gigs without any acoustic songs (don't remember if that was on the European tour as well or at one point on a UK tour.) Now you make me doubt my own memories of this, haha! ;) Maybe I'm getting old and misremember things, but I am convinced it must have happened, because I remember disliking it. You're absolutely right that their set is perfectly structured as it is now!
I love this artist
