Love these guys. They loved Neil Young, Dinosaur Jr., and must have been influenced by Big Star, R.E.M., etc. Those influences, mixed with their Scottish sensibilities, created a great sound. Bandwagonesque is one of my all time favorite albums by anyone. They captured something special on that album, especially.
I fully agree it's true that so many bands don't get the plaudits they deserve and this band was sadly one of them but at least 'Bandwagonesque' (i do like it- those!) got rewarded but in my view isn't there best. I feel the criticized 'Thirteen' album was better and 'Grand Prix' was there best ones. Another i own is Northern songs from Northern Britain is also a good LP.
Sums up my feelings about teenage fanclub. Good album, but Sparky's dream, Neil Jung, Gene Clark, Fear of Flying, Start Again, are all examples of better songs on better albums.
What a freudian slip!!! I, of course, meant 'September Girls' from Radio City by Big Star which I've loved since I read about it after the fannies were compared with them around the time of this. Felt the need to justify myself there, but we're all friends really!
Yeh, sometimes journos talk about bands having influences as though it's a criminal act. I remember the suggestion that bandwaggonesque was somehow unworthy because the band had plagiarised Big Star. Like many indie-kids at the time I was pretty shocked, so went out and bought Radio City and #1 record (in the bargain bins at woolies for a couple of quid!!). I just loved all that stuff, and although I could hear something similar, it was more than just a copy.
with you totally on the journos thing... how can people NOT have influences ffs?! and you hit nail on head there... if it's not just a plain copy but takes the idea and moves it on some ... that's development!
same thing happens in physics and psychology ... why not in music?
latest i heard was that they have to argue it out in court and he cannae find a lawyer to represent him ... seems he pissed a few of them off one time ;)
@dunkiep I agree, Big Star is one of my favorite bands. As are Teenage Fanclub,TF wasn't copying Big Star. They were expanding on a much underappreciated style of rock. The influence is very apparent but they managed to progress the sound while staying true to their influences.
Big Star's Fourth Album indeed!

Your talking about songs from Grand Prix & Thirteen which was badly criticized (thirteen) which I felt was a gr8 LP. Spot on mate.

lifts a melody from Nighttime by Big Star, but that's okay.

dunno about December Girls ... it's September Girls, really.... but there's a real flavour of Daisy Glaze from the same LP as SG

ah ... easy done, man ... the two months' names appear in the same song... can bugger anyone up...
but the comparisons - yeh, valid but not insulting to the fannies... and yeh, both bands good friends with each other.
this sort of music is very uplifting.

... and writing! What story has not already been written before? (probably by Shakespear).
Anyway, it's about time for a new fannies album, me thinks - is anything in the pipeline?
