The Hall and the organ are Mind Blowing. I went to see it when I lived in the UK I live in NZ now.It would be on the very short list of things I miss from Blighty.
Liverpool, 2008 European Capital of Culture... what a farce. Spent all the money on celebrating the fucking Beatles and left this fabulous instrument unrestored... bloody disgrace. The Beatles were incredibly overrated mediocre crap anyway...
@EccentricRichard I agree in a way., but Liverpool isn't immune to that sort of thing when it comes to organs. The powers that be at the South Bank spent millions on refurbishing and 'improving' the acoustics in the Royal Festival Hall and didn't put back the iconic symbol of the auditorium, the concert organ! Only a third of it is in ther with a horrid ugly black void where the rest of it should be. Thankfully an appeal is under way. Finally.
This is a fantastic and beautiful organ. I recently went to hear Ian Tracey play at St Georges Hall and it was a joy. Especially the tuba stop! The CD with Christopher Dearnley is great too
Really liked that, i hope they manage to restore this lovely Willis instrument soon. Also strangely nostalgic, echoes of the British Empire and Civic pride at its very best here in Liverpool. Thanks for posting.
I was in Dr Jarvis' Cecilia choir in the early 1960s. I own the Victrola recording on LP, but would like the cd. Did he only make one recording? I haven't been able to find others.
I had the privilege of listening to Dr Caleb Jarvis playing this organ in 1963 at a private concert arranged by my former music master, Ernest Shaw from Birkenhead Institute were Caleb Jarvis had been a pupil.
This gave me goose bumps. The 3, who didn't like this, apparently don't like organ music at all. What is there NOT to like about this?
A great Willis masterpiece, a perfect room for it, the piece, that Ian's playing was flawless..... so what's wrong with it?
Thanks, JF.

Caleb Jarvis made a stunning recording of this instrument on the Vista label of the late, great Michael Smythe, many moons ago.

My father used to have an LP with Jarvis playing Flor Peeter's Lied Symphony amongst others - from what I can remember it was amazing :-)

Lovely recording of this grand old Father Willis organ in the equally grand setting of St George's Hall, Liverpool. Thanks for posting!

As a former colonist, I'm trying to figure out which piece gives me the most British chills: this or 'Jerusalem."
Another gem. Absolutely stunning aocustics.
