@GundamAngelicDevil ok bro it don't matter which hand you are. If you play traditional you always have a match grip in the right and traditional in the left. You will never play traditional any other way. Now with matched grip both hands are the same. Now scratch what i said before, your stronger hand will have more power. Just be careful. Work both hands the same and the same way. Like i can be doing singles in my left forever and my right not so much and i am right handed. So just work both.
How to hold a piece of wood...there are so many sexual innuendos with drums it's ridiculous. My personal favorite is telling girls I really know how to bang...drums.
I disagree, actually. The fulcrum point is a actually very beneficial for all drummers and I can almost guarantee you that you're favorite drummers use it. Besides, this video is foundational (something to build from).
Thanks so much man! You taught me how to handle my wood in ways i've never imagined! I can't wait to show my friends how to! I can't wait to show my friends how to grip their wood like I do!
every right-handed person has a very weak left hand.
left-handed people are more likely to be ambidextrous, but us right-handed people can achieve ambidexterity also with a lot of finger stretching and finger exercise.
i think he tries to be a bit too fancy with his body language but camera work is very important when demonstrating something that isn't easily visible
blankogotsacked: try moving the thumb up toward yourself so that you can press the stick down with your thumb as you play, you don't need to move it that much, the friction does most of the work.
Hey Everyone! Thanks for the great comments and questions. To answer anyones question about hand pain... you need to TOTALLY relax your hand when using this "gentle grip", because tension causes the muscles to overwork. Try playing very loosely with a secure fulcrum and you'll see the results!
I have a question about the left hand classic grip which I tried practicing. When i play with the grip as shown in this video the underside of my hand (oppostite to my thumb, the soft bit) starts to ache very quickly, i think it is because the finger below the drumstick is taking too much weight. Anyone have any advice on this, I must be doing it wrong or something.
The video was helpful but there is a big question for me. The fulcrum makes sense when it is first shown with the hand vertical but then the hand is turned so that the palm is facing down. At this point the fulcrum seems to be over neither the thumb or the finger but in the air. Is that right?
Thanks Mike very appreciative of your lesson, A year into having my own kit, and have had trouble with left hand balance ,your video is very defined and grounding. x4dr
nice vid quality. Very informative. I hold my drum sticks kinda weird. Its an opposite traditional position. It's the traditional method, except the hand positions are switched.
''if I lift the tip and let it fall it just dies..I get nothing outta the stick..'' Was I the only one to laugh at that?

Great work, exactly the amount of details I was looking for.
Starting to use the matched grip, I find the stick easily slips to that second knuckle. Will practice eliminate this? Or am I doing something wrong?

I have the same problem. As I start playing they always slip to the second knuckle and suddenly im just 'holding' the stick in my hand.
